The continuance of the unusually
beautiful and balmy spring weather
which has blessed this section of
the country has afforded an oppor
tunity for much outdoor enjoyment.
The whole country is beginning to
look lovely in its green robes, and
the bright reds, yellows, and pinks
of the fruit trees is indeed a vision
of exquisite and rare beauty.
Since April, 1898, West Hemlock
township has lost, by death, five
aged and respected residents, whose
names and ages are as follows : Ja
cob Stine, 72 ; Hiram Kitchen, 69 ;
Vincent R. Shultz, 79 ; Reuben
Bomboy, 96; Wm. Crossley, 81.
The average age of these old gen
tlemen was therefore 77 years. A
good showing as to the healthful
ness of West Hemlo:k and the lon
gevity of the inhabitants. Danville

With the exception of the blow
ing of some of the factory whistles,
at about half past five Monday
morning, Dewey Day passed off
very quietly in Bloomsburg. It was
not a legal holiday and the banks
remained open. A parade made up
of Normal School students on bi
cycles took place about ten o'clock.
The procession was headed by a
hack load of ladies also from the
school.
The stars and stripes floated from
many buildings during the day. In
the evening the Bloomsburg Band
held a dance in the Town Hall, at
which a general good time was had,
although a thunder storm which
occurred about eight o'clock inter
fered very much with the attend
ance. But notwithstanding the fact
that the demonstration was of a
mild order, it was Dewey Day any
how and always will be. The anni
versary of one of the most moment
ous and far-reaching naval victories
of modern times.

A woman bearing the romantic
name of Roxina Rosencrance, living
in the beautiful village of Towanda
was arrested Saturday evening,
charged with kicking a seven-year-old
boy to death. The lady kept
house for Jerry VanSickle, the boy
belonged to his brother, S. P. Van
Sickle, and report says the woman
was in the habit of beating him un
mercifully. The boy told his father
that Miss Roxina sprang at him,
uttering an oath, and kicked him in
the abdomen, lifting him clear off
the floor. He was placed in the
hospital where he died Saturday. If
the charge is proved Bradford county
justice is apt to send her to jail for
a full week. Dushore Review.
Very frequently circulars address
ed to the police department are re
ceived by authorities from different
places in the country containing
descriptions and portraits of crimin
als, and offering rewards for their
capture. Some of the pictures oi
these circulars are very interesting.
We w'eie shown one on Monday,
containing a new system of identify
ing criminals which has been adopt
ed throughout the world. It is a
very complete method, in fact so
much so that a man might be head
less and yet be identified. It is
based upon knowledge that no two
human beings are precisely alike.
Therefore exact measurements of
the body, limbs, hands and feet are
taken. Every minute scar, mole or
mark that would be permanent un
less cut out is recorded and its precise
location designated upon an outline
cut of a human figure. It is a
wonderful method, but of course
can only be employed to effect the
capture of such criminals as have
been subjected to examination by
officers of the law.

Well now.maybe candidates hav
ent been swarming around here
this week. There was a double
attraction for them in the regular
May term of court and the meeting
of the school directors for the elec
tion of a County Superintendent.
Wherever you turned you could see
one or more of them bobbins uo
serenely. The hustling aspirants
whom we saw getting in their big
licks with the residents of the rural
districts, who were brought here by
one or the other of the above stated
events, were: Wilson Yeager, Jerry
Snyder, and W. B. Snyder of the
South Side candidates for the Treas-
urership, and W. II. Fisher, of
Main township and Charles Gibbons
of Benton township, candidates lor
County Commissioner. J. C. Rut
ter and A. N. Yost of this town,
candidates for Register and Record
er were also sharing in the fun, and
were making hay while the sun was
shining. In fact they were all on
hand, rubbing up against each other,
but the best of good humor prevail
ed, ana while many are opposing
each other, and each putting up
sun ngnt tor the democratic nom
inations, for the respective offices,
they are as they should be, all good
friends.

A musical and oratorical contest
was held in the Lutheran church
Tuesday evening. The audience
wiis very large and the program ex
cellent. The prizes were awarded
to Miss Julia Martin, for music, and
for oratory to Miss Minnie Diely.
A thunder and lightning storm
of unusual severity visited this town
Tuesday afternoon. There was also
considerable hail fell. The wind
was of a violent nature and did con
siderable damage to the electric
light wires. On Market Street limbs
were torn from many of the trees,
and similar damages were done in
other parts of town.
David Wright, a locomotive en
gineer on the Philadelphia and
Reading Railroad, met with a seri
ous accident at Catawissa Tuesday
afternoon. He was under the engine
examining some of the workings,
when the iron steed moved forward
just far enough to catch his foot,
crushing it so badly that amputa
tion was necessary. Mr. Wright
has been in the Company's employ
for many years.
A weasel has taken up its abode
under, the steps leading down to
Glascoe Cameron's barber shop,
and has furnished considerable
amusement for a great many peo
ple during the past few days. Yes
terday morning it made its appear
ance in front of the postoffice, and
attracted the attention of half a
dozen men and boys, who were
standing near. An attempt was
made on the little rascal's Hfe, but
making use of its agility, for which
its kind is remarkable, succeeded
in dodging the sticks and stones
fired at it, and made its escape
down the steps. Rats will be
scarce in the vicinity of its abode,
and should it run across any hen
roosts while on its nocturnal rounds,
there will be a difference in the
size of the flock the next morning.
NOTES FROM E8PT.
Parvin Groh and wife of Berwick.
visited in town on Sunday.
John Edgar of Weatherly, was a
recent visitor in town.
Harry Straub of Beaver Valley.
Sundayed with his parents on
Hidlay Hill.
Rev. and Mrs. Mmsker of Nanti-
coke have been called to town on
account of the death of the latter's
sister, Mrs. Boughter.
It may be an item of interest to
the public generally to learn that
R. Creveling is seriously con
sidering the purchase of a bicycle.
Eevi Kiuley, who has been dang
erously ill for many months, we
understand is quite low at this
writing.
Mrs. Alfred Boughter departed
this life very suddenly on Sunday
night last. She had not been en
joying good health for many months,
but her death was quite unexpected
as she was apparently in a much
improved condition. She was of
a kind and loving disposition, an
excellent Christian, and her demise
will be sadly appreciated by the
husband and three children who
survive. The sympathy of the en
tire community is extended to the
family in this, their greatest afflic
tion. Huston Robinson, is another of
our people who has gone to his
ast long rest, having died at his
sister's home in Bloomsburg on
Monday. Mr. Robinson was one of
our oldest and best known citizens.
HOW TO riNU OUT.
Fill a bottle or common glass with
your water and let it stand twenty-four
hours: a sediment or settling indicates
an unhealthy condition of the kidneys;
if it stains your linen it is evidence of
kidney trouble; too lrequent desire to
pass it or pain in the back is also con
vincing proof that the kidneys and
bladder are out of order.
What to Do.
There is comfort in the knowledge
so often expressed, that Dr. Kilmer's
Swamp-Root, the great kidney remedy
fulfills every wish in curing rheumatism
pain in the back, kidneys, liver, blad
der and every part of the urinary pass
ages. It corrects inability to hold
water and scalding pain in passing it,
or bad effects following use of liquor,
wine or beer, and overcomes that
unpleasant necessity of being com
pelled to go often during the day, and
to get up many times during the night.
The mild and the extraordinary eflect
of Swamp-Root is soon realized. It
stands the highest for its wonderful
cures of the most distressing cases. If
you need a medicine you should have
the best. At druggists fifty cents or
one dollar.
You may have a sample bottle and
a book that tells more about it, both
sent absolutely free by mail, if you
send your address to Dr. Kilmer &
Co., Binghamton, N. Y. When writ-
ing be sure and mention that you
