New York, March 1. The Tammany
war on the Manhattan Hallway Com
pany eollupsed yesterday afternoon In
the municipal assembly. The council
recalled from the mayor the resolution
passed last week to compel the plac
ing of drlo panB under all the 114 miles
f tracks within sixty days.
The resolution was amended to allow
six months In which to complete the
work. As amended the resolution was
repassed.
This proceeding was regarded as a
practical abandonment of the war on
the elevated roads. The change In the
programme was made on orders from
Richard Croker.
The city hall was crowded at an early
our with Tammany politicians and
persons anxious to witness the attempt
to drive through the municipal assem
bly the strike bills against the Man
hattan Railway Company. For an hour
before the meeting of the board of al
dermen there were many and conflict
ing rumors In circulation as to the pro
gress of the tight against the elevated .
railroad.
Two additional strike bills were pen
ding, one in each house, and It was
understood that the Tammany mem
bers of the assembly had received or
ders to pass them. The two bills would
compel the Manhattan Company to
provide yards for the storage of cars i
and to enclose the platforms of sta
tlons.
fiotilil Makes a Itrport,
Stockholders representing a majority
of the stock of the Manhattan Elevated 1
Railway Company met at the offlce of
President George Could yesterday at
noon.
At the meeting Mr. Gould made a
brief speech explaining the attack made
by Richard Croker on the company
through the medium of the city de
partments In control of Tammany Hall
and Bald:
"You have doubtless noticed that an
attack is being .made by the sudden
and concerted use of the municipal ma
chinery of the city to embarrass or
thwart the company In its proposed im
provements. "This attempt first came to the sur
face simultaneously with this com
pany's failure to .comply with a de
mand made on behalf of the New York
Auto-Truck Company to enter into a
contract with that company to let it
fasten its pipes on the entire railway
structure of this company for a nomi
nal consideration.
"That the effect of such a failure
would be to bring on the attack on the
part of the municipal authorities which
has been made on this company was
foreseen and feared fro mthe begin
ning. "When this matter was finally sub
mitted to our counsel, he declared that
pipes containing compressed air at a
pressure of two thousand pounds to the
square Inch being presumably danger
ous, If thctie torpedoes were put on the
railway structure and should explode
and cause loss of life, this company
would bo culpable. Its otlicers subject
to Indictment and the company's fran
thlaes liable to forfeiture.
"Immediately after It becamo evident
that the contract would not be signed
y this company the opening attacks
upon this company by the board of
stealth commenced, which have been
followed by like attacks on the part of
Iher departments of the city govern
ment. "The company confidently relies up
n the support of the public In Its pol
icy to make these Improvements, nr.d
stockholders may rest assured thut
these hostile demonstrations on th
jrt of the city officials will not be Bi
llowed to delay the proposed Improve
ments for a single day."
BASEBALL MAGNATES ASSEMBLE.
FprluK Meeting of the National Leugur
Opens.
New York, March 1. Baseball mag
sates and nlayers, together with a
fence crowd of persons Interested In
the national game, throng the corn
tors of the Fifth Avenue Hotel In at
tendance upon the annual spring meet
ig of the National League.
The principal topic among the mana
JTers and players Is the consolidation
f the Brooklyn and Baltimore clubs,
which was brought to a successful is-
cne late Monday afternoon.
That the deal would result favorably
tor all parties concerned was general
Ajr conceded. With a teum of stars un
tr the management of Hanlon playing
at Washington Park, there" could be no
doubt, said the enthusiasts, thut ex
cellent support from Brooklynites and
consequent big financial returns might
be expected by the stockholders of the
ctub.
Baltimore, on the other hand, it was
said, would still be repersented by a
'airly strong aggregation of players
"Kimposed partly of the men who repre
icnted Brooklyn last year.
The probable results that would
rise from thin week's meeting of the
stagnates were also discussed In the
hotel corridors. It was thought by
some that the circuit would be reduc
d to eight clubs, although the report
that this would be done was denied
7 the club owners almost to a man,
Other Important matters that will
come up at the present conference are
the question of increasing the power
f the board of discipline, the restora
tion of the umpire's power to impeose
lines on players, and the discussion of
the report of the rules committee of the
vague.
