When Johnny (Jets E.s Gnn. When Johnny gels his gun, look out, There's bound lo he a fuss, For Johnny is in earnest when He holds his blunderbuss ! His martial air is wonderful; His smile upsets all fun. And things assume a warlike air, When Johnny gets his gur. In softer moods our John is calm, He's sportive, gay and good, And acts with much propriety, As freemen always should ! When yachting he will never "load" His vessel on the run, But saves his efforts till the time. He wants to load his gun. lie's sturdy on the baseball field, And football plays with vim; In cricket, too, he doth excel And sports afield suit him. But in the battle van, for right, He'll make the foemen run; Ami, oh, the triumph of that hour When Johnny gets his gnn I In wild adventure John delights, He love's to travel, too, And, when exploring, always keeps The North Pole up to view 1 And, as for loving Liberty, i • He's freedom's honest son I And down will go its enemies, When Johnny gets his gun. And war upon the Spanish Main Is suited to his mind He'll spring to arms at Freedom's call, And leave all fear behind. On Cuba's soil he'll raise the flag, That waves 'neath Freedom's sun, Ami Spaniards all will rue the day That Johnny gets his gun. Stand back I Monroe once said the Word That makes the nation grand, And Congress gives it emphasis, A law unto the land I Stand back ! Stand back I A million men Shout 'neath the Western sun, And, oh, the gathering of the hosts, When Johnny gets his gun I Dun's Weekly Eeview of Trade- R. G. Dun & Company's Weekly Review of Trade says : Hostilities have not as yet changed last week's conditions. There is much postponement of orders by men who do not know what they are wait ing for, and much restriction of loans by banks which are abundantly strong. All this checks new business, and yet the volume of transactions through clearing houses is larger than the same week in 1892, with no foreign irouble. New York clearings are 2.1 per cent, smaller than in 1892, but outsid? clearings only 6.0 per cent, smaller. The railroads are do ing a great business, 5 7 per cent, larger than in 1892 tn April earnings thus far, and 13.9 larger than last year. Wheat prices advanced cents, 8| cents within the past week. Receipts of 2,746.590 bushels at the West this week against 1,552,875 a year ago, and averaging 250,000 bushels per week for January. Febru ary and March, while exports amount ing to 3,704,675 busnels from Atlan tic ports, against 643,178 'ast year, and 786,078 from Pacific coast, against 186,941 last year, flour includ ed in all cases, makes exports for the four weeks 12,093,768 from Atlantic, and 2,880,020 from Pacific'ports, and for the crop year thus far 180,661,678 bushels, against 127,158,684 during the same months and weeks of last year. Corn exports for the week were 3,788,280 bushels, against 3,029,046 last year, and for four weeks have been 12,266,681 bushels, against 13,350,207 last year. Con fusing accounts about the great indus tries cannot cause surprise in view of the contradictory influence of mone tary stringency curtailing many orders, heavy orders by government in many branches, and all prevading confidence that after temporary conditions have passed, business is going to be better. The consumption of iron is still the greatest ever known, though many structural and car contracts have been deferred. Tne week has witnessed Eastern inquiries for plate at Chicago and a general advance of $2 per ton, with refusal of bids by implement makers at Chicago for bar iron be cause higher prices in the future are expected, and Eastern buying of bars from Chicago for car building with a shade lower prices at Pittsburg for Bessemer pig because the associated producers hold to agreed prices, al though middlemen are selling at lower figures. The cotton manufacturer has been helped by some government contracts and a little belter outside demand, and the temporary advance in raw cotton to 6.44 cents, though the price has since declined to 6.37. Woolen manufacturers are doing rather better, large government orders helping some works, while other de g mands are more encouraging. Sales I of wool are about a sixth of last year's I for Apitl, haif of those in 1896, and a ' third of sales in 1892. Failures for the week have been 261 in the United States, against 237 last year, and 16 in Canada, against 40 last year.
