I mated that their liabilities will reach $1,000,000. Mr. Dwiggins is at present traveling in Europe. T. R. Willard, senior member of the firm, has been a member of the Consoli dated exchange since September a 3, n Chicago and had a branch office in that city up to a few months ago, when it closed and the business was taken over by John Dickinson & Co. Elmer Dwiggms was the working head of the firm. He made applica tion to be admitted to membership in the Consolidated exchange on July 31, but was not admitted. Elmer and Dwiggins, who are brothers, are nephews of Zimn Dwiggins, who founded a large system of country banks in Illinois, Indiana and other western states, most of which failed in the panic of 1893 "The cause of the failure," said As signee Starbuck, "is simply that the firm has been upon the wrong side ot the market. They have been short on stock and grain." The firm has done a big business on the consolidated exchange within sixty days, having run as high as 9,000 to 10,000 shares of stock daily. The assignee, Mr. Starbuck, is one of the bookkeepers of the firm. On his be half another employee maue the fol lowing statement : "It is difficult to tell what the lia bilities ot the firm are, but they will probably amount to as much as $1,000,000. It is even more difficult at this time to give any idea of the assets of the firm. Whatever they are, they consist, mainly ol cash 111 bank, outstanding accounts and securities. There is some prospect of a resumption of business, provided a reasonable settlement can be made with the creditors." Was Not so Nervous. "I have been a urc-at sufferer for many years with liver and kidney trou bles, indigestion and headaches. I was nervous and could not sleep. Hood's Sarsaparilla was recommend ed to me and I thought I would try it. After taking a few bottles my headache was relieved. I was not so nervous and I was able to eat and sleep well." Mrs. R. J. Another sleeping car story is being circulated, and the truth of it is back ed by a man well known in Chicago for his veracitv and abhorrence of exaggeration. He tells the story on himself, or rather his wife, and, while it savors of the usual sleeping car tale, it has its good points. Together with his wife, the man was traveling recently trom California. One night he awoke m his berth in the agony of horrible pains in the sto mach. As they were passing through a prohibition district, and there was nothing more tempting on board than apollinaris water, his intentions were honest when he shrieked loudly for brandy. But there was none to be had, so, with the instinct of a true woman dur 'ng family affliction, the wife rushed to her satchel and drew t'.ierefrom a mustard plaster, an institution upon v.hich she pinned her faith in cases of tne kind, and requested the porter to get hot water without delay. When the poultice was in readiness or application, she returned ana care- fnllu r..,l'.l ;,! tk. .,,rtain ftf a berth, tenderly placing the plaster. An instant later a howl tent the mr n.A n nf nnu rmnnt!nry from behind the long whiskers of a stranjzer, gasped out "Great heavens, the train's wreck ed ! The boiler's lying on me ! Oh, how it burns I Heln ! Help! Fire! Fire 1" Nichtcar-s. disordered frizzes, red and sleepy eyes and ashen faces were thrust out into the aisle in horror, wonder and surprise. The poor woman who was the innocent cause of the excitement hastily withdrew to her own quarters, while the porter re moved the "boiler" from the stranger and assured everybody that all was well Chicago Inter Ocean.
