O THE COLUMBIAN. BLOOMSBURG. PA. WASHINGTON. i our Ki'RUlar Correspondent. Washington, March 5th, 1S97. The inauguration of the million aire's President was pulled off in a manner gorgeous enough to be in keeping with the cost of electing him, which is said to have exceeded $16,. 000,000. Everything was conducted on the most lavish scale, from the personal escort from Cleveland, Ohio, with their black horses, for which $10,000, was spent, to the ten thou sand electric lights of variegated colors used in illuminating the costly decorations for the inaugural ball in the big court of the Tension building. It was a millionaire's event from start to finish, and the talk of the million aire's agent, otherwise known as King Hanna, indicates that it is to be a millionaire's administration, notwith standing the platitudes of McKinley's inaugural address. Never before were there so many private railway cars in Washington at one time and never before was so much money spent at and upon an inauguration. It is very evident that the million aire's expect McKinley's administra tion to bring them prosperity, what ever it may do for the poor. When they invest their money, they always expect, and they usually get, return in dollars and cents. Hon. Wm. J. Bryan, who spent two days in Washington this week, divid ed his time between conferences with pleading democrats and social inter course with his extensive circle of per sonal friends, but declined to remain for the inauguration of his successful rival, said to those who proffered him their support for hat he was not thinking so much about the next Presidential campaign as about the condition of the people, between now and then. He also expressed his sincere regret that the promised McKinley Prosperity " had not come to the country. It is a remark able fact about Mr. Bryan that his hold upon Democrats has increased since his defeat, instead of diminish ing, as is usual in the case of defeated candidates of all parties. The silver men are not surprised at the failure of the Fifty fourth Con gress to admit Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma as states, and they expect no betiet from the Fifty-fifth Congress as the edict has gone forth from the Republican bosses that none of the territories shall be admitted, because it is known that they would all send silver senators But the sil ver men expect to control the House that will be elected in November 1898, and as they will certainly retain control of the Senate, to have the territories all admitted to statehood before the opening of the campaign of 1900. Ex-Postmaster General Wilson left the fraud charges again at John Wedderburn & Co., and the National Recorder, their paper, which were filled wilh the Post-office Department a few days ago by fifty-five of Wash ington's leading patent lawyers, to be acted upon by his successor. The head of the firm of Wedderburn & Co., is the man who started the Ex aminer Claims Bureau and the Press Claims Co., both of which, during their existence, had extensive dealings with newspaper publishers and figured in suits in Court. Senator Teller thus stated his opin ion of the relations of Mr. McKinley toward the monetary conference bill, which passed with the House amend ments : " If the new President has my sympathy for an international agreement it must be judged from his votes in the House, and not from uiything he has said since his nona aation, for, excepting the prefurictory acceptance of the platform, his every utterance has indicated that he has one over to the gold standard, and ill remain there." Senator Tillman was the central igure in the most dramatic incident jf the closing week of Congress. He harged in impassioned tones that c two corporations which have a nonopoly of making armor plate for he Government have agents in the Senate and when Senator Hawley, of Jonn., protested against the charge, e repeated it, and intimated very plainly that Hawley was one of the agents. There was a time when such a- charge would have resulted in (rouble outside the Senate chamber, but Senators no longer fight with any other weapons than their tongues. Mr. Cleveland vetoed the Immigra tion Bill, on the ground that it was a departure from our national policy hat would impose hardships upon deserving people. The House passed is over the veto, but the Senate did jot try. It is noteworthy that the harshest criticisms of the manifest weakness, both from a business and political point of view, of the men in McKin ey's Cabinet, have come from those vho are classed as Republican leaders. Of course this'criticisin is as yet only privately expressed, but it indicates that nnless McKinley walks the chalk .me he will soon find himself confront ed by formidable Republican opposi tion. Rorer, in telling how to fry the small fish, quotes the old saying : "Small fish should swim twice once in water, and once in oil." "Smelts, trout, whitebait, perch and catfish," she says, "are, perhaps, more palatable fried than broiled. Small fish may be stripped that is, the in testines may be pushed out under the gills, so that the fish may retain their shape. Wash and dry, then dust with salt and pepper, dip in egg and roll in breadcrumbs, or they may be rolled in cornmeal. Have ready a good sized pan with sufficient oil to cover. Put the fish in a frying basket, then into the oil at a temperature of 3600 Fahrenheit, and cook for about min utes. Drain on brown paper and Where a small quantity of fat is used, and the fish cooked on one side and then turned and cooked on the other, the method is really not frying it is sauteing ; the result is more indigesti ble than real frying. Catfish are fre quently fried in this way without be ing dipped in crumbs. Sunfish may be rolled in flour or cornmeal and carefully fried in dripping, oil or lard. A mixture of dripping and lard makes a better frying material than lard alone. A pure vegetable oil is freer from danger of disease germs than either. Never use butter for frying fish ; it boils at a low temperature, consequently burns quickly ; the buty ric acid softens the fibre of the fish, destroys the flavor, and causes it to become soft as soon as taken from the pan." The Heart Must Not be Trifled with. Where there are symptoms of heart weakness, there should be Dr. Agnew's Cure for the Heart, it's a magical remedy, gives relief in thirty minutes, and there thousands who testify that it cures permanently. Mrs. W. T. Rundle, of Dundalk., Ont., says : "I was for years unable to at tend to my household duties. I used Dr. Agnew's Cure for the Heart, the result was wonderful, the pain left me immediately after the first dose, and a few bottles cured." Power in a Pound of Ooal. A curious and interesting calcula tion has been made by Professor Rogers of Washington on the " dyna mic" power of coal. According to his deductions, a pound of good steam coal has within it dynamic power equivalent to the work of one man for a period of 10 hours. Three tons of similar coal represent a man's Jhbor for a period of several years. One square mile of a seam of coal having a depth of only 4 feet represent power aqual to that expended by 1,000,000 men ten hours each day for 20 years. Such calculations as these made by Mr. Rogers mav serve to remind us how very wasteful our methods of burning fuels must be, in spite of all that has been done in the fuel saving line by the inventors and economists. In the March Ladies Ikmt Jour nal Edward W. Bok writes of the " fast " man, and the duties of fathers to their daughters in placing him where he belongs and warning them against him. Mr. Bok believes that if it is said of a man that " he has seen the world," in other words, is " fast," thtre is instantly a singular glamour about him in the eves of young girls girls as good and pure as were ever created. There is a scent of danger about such a man, and there are girls for whom danger, even of this sort, has a singular fasci nation. " The girls know that these rrjen are bad. But so long as they respect me and treat me as a lady where's the harm ? ' savs the young woman when she is called to account for her company. " As a matter of fact, the exatt things which a man does to eam the reputation of being 4 fast ' are neither known nor dreamed of by the girls for whom such a reputation has this glamour. The trouble lies in the fact that our girls are brought up under a system which hesitates to call a spade by its right name. We are afraid of offending or of shocking certain fancied sensibilities, whereas, in real ity, we make the greater mistake of making diamonds out of spades and giving our girls a wrong idea of actual things. " It is all very well to be tender in our regard for the feelings of our girls, but there is a limit, a point at which discretion be comes a crime. And that point has been reached when girls are allowed to know and associate with such men all unconscious of the danger. When every mother or father, or person with whom the duty may rest, classes the fast' man where he belongs, and por trays him in his true light, it will be better for our girls. It is high time that some of them should know that the man who leads anything but a pure -life buys, in every instance, that experience at a distinct sacrifice to himself and at a tremendous cost to the girl who marries him." On some of the French water courses a system of chain haulage has been adopted to assist steam tugs in towing barges up the river against the stream. Briefly, the chain, which is fastened at each end, lies at the bot tom of the river. It passes' between guides at the stern or bow of the tug, over rollers or guides and round nearly the whole of the circumference of the haulage pulley or drum, which is driv en by gearing from the enzines. Leaving this pulley the chain passes over a similar series of rollers between breaking pulleys and is then permitted to fall again into the river. With a view to increase the sneed of the tug, a system of magnetic ad hesion has been devised by M. Bovet and has recently been tested on the Seine. It consists essentially in com bining in the hauling pulley a magnet, the upper sides of the groove forming powerful pole pieces, which are short circuited when the chain engages in the groove. By this means the pull on the chain and therefore the speed of the boat ae increased. One of the towingpompanies on the Seine is said to haVe adopted this system. Detroit Free J'ress.
