"What with telegraph wires hung up In the most unexpected luce and the railroad with all the inise'anfl amoke. and those terrible hawks It does seem as If we could not have a minute's peace. It's 'look out there' or 'run away from this,' or 'fly .way' from that,' all the time." Oh' I'm not afraid," said one young, "nor "I did run Into a telegraph wire U,e "first day It was put up, but now I JodKO them all." ! never ran abide the trains," said small Miss, In speckled gray. I know they do no harm, but they fright tn me Just the same, and I always Oy or ay " -I can stnnd nearly everything but the hawks." said one of the older ones In the party. They all agreed nobody could abide liawks. If It were not for the fact that (hey could run and hide when the tawks nppeared, life would not be worth living. High in the air, wheeling slowly round and round In great circles, was a hawk looking shnrply down on the enunirv. spread out like n map beneath him. He could see the fields, the woods, the brooks and ponds, the roads, and the railway. There wero chickens down In the farm yards. Ho must move slowly and cautiously so as sot to attract attention ana ainrm me cock and hens. If he was carerui, per haps he could have spring chicken for breakfast. Suddenly he dropped, like a atone, out of the sky right Into a farm vard. Ah! They saw him and ran, and oh! there was a man with a gun! The hawk turned and darted into the air, while a shower of shot whistled after him. How vexatious! No.--' chicken this time. The sun was now more than an hour high and ho had eaten nothing Inee the afternoon before, when he Jind eanpht a spnrrow tn a whont field He circled round and round, keeping a iharn lookout for a breakfast. Ah fcere was Just the thing a wholo Hock of llttlu birds holding a meeting in a Held next to the railroad. He steered off to one side and 'then made a bold dart right In among them Away they flew In every direction and in a moment were leering at him from the bushes. He sprang up Into the air and mailed round and round, very hun rrv and in a discontented frame of mind. The meeting of the little fellows re- Mimed Its session, and one small speak er made a brave speech about not car ing for anything. He could get out of the way at any time. He was not the one to be afraid of Just then a train rushed by on the railroad and the meeting adjourned in a hurry. The speaker tumbled from the fence-rail and the audience seam tered off ouite demoralized by fright. "Ha! ha!" remarked tho hawk. "That gives mo an idea! I'll have reg ular breakfasts after this. He looked up and down the railroad for "'.iles In each direction and saw a tr.i-i coming. He ilew that way and so'.f met it tearing along with a great ii; ; iir and much smoke. It was a trl Jf ilarming at first, but he bravely fo'i ved It and found he could easily kee.) up with the cars, though the Miioki! made his eyes smart. He flew tlose behind tho last car, right In the imoko and dust where he could not be teen. As the train rushed along, be could see the small birds scattering way on each side, frightened out of their wits by the noise and smoke. Swoop! The train rushed on and ly Mr. Hawk clapped his claws on a sparrow and then flew leisurely away to enjoy his breakfast. .Every one within a mile was on hand t the great Indignation meeting at Cranberry Hollow. Blu and gray and black and red breasts in fact, every little thing on wings in that part of the country. It was dreadful! Perfectly shame hil. The hawks had devised a horrible, wicked trick. They flew behind rail road trains, and when the little birds were half frightened out of their wits nd tried to run away In confusion, the hawks darted out from behind the cars and, pouncing upon the poor Innocents actually ate them ud! Such a state ot affairs could not be tolerated. It was BionstrouB, tyrannical, and very wick ed on the part of the hawks. Resolu tions declaring the practice an unfair ne, and calling for Its suppression, "just be drawn up and sent by mail to J'l the railroad men, and copies must Presented to the hawks. Just then a venerable tomtit rose In the meeting and remarked in a severe manner that, for his part, be thought 'ny had just cause for Indignation. The resolutions were highly proper and nould be signed by all, but remind ing his hearers of the well-known fable 01 the rats, the bell, and the cat he would like to ask who was to deliver paper to th hawks. A solemir hush fell on the assembled congress. Not a peep was raised. It as so until vnn rnnlri bnvfi heard a "u-ieatner drop. , . . . - - ouiuioniy there was a rush, a roar M a blind'ng cloud of smoke. The Muimlttee had Incautiously called the eetlng too close to the railroad, and the assembly suddenly broke up In the wildest disorder and confusion. jwo minutes later a savage hawk " cruel claws was seated on th "ice enjoying a brep.ktast and waiting me next train, that he might re l,eat Ilia WlpUpil trlKki Such is bird life!
