THE COLUMBIAN. BLOOMSBURG, PA. The Oldest Man. The oldest man now living in the United States is said to be Alexander Freeman, an inmate of the Sailor's Snug Harbor on Statcn Island. He was born December 22, 1 786, and will,' accordingly, have lived no years next Christmas. Next in age to Freeman is William Haines, who fought under General Jackson at New Oleans. He lives in the St. Louis Memorial Home, and is said to be 107 years old. The ae of Davis Parks of Fowler, Michigan, is given as 106 years, and Percy Dyer of Jielvidere, Illinois, and Andrew F. McKee of Burlington, Kansas, are said to be each 104 years of age. All but one of these men are enrolled as veterans of the War of 181 2. Sound as a Dollar. Orbisonia, Pa., April 15, 1896. "I had the grip very badly and took three bottles of Hood's Sarsaparilla and it cured me sound as a dollar. Hood's Sarsaparilla has all the praise for my cure. I believe I never felt so badly in my life as I did before taking Hood s Sarsaparilla. Howard Leo nard. Hood's Pills cure all liver ills. At the session of the Odd Fellows grand lodge in Pittsburg, some changes were made in the conduct of the order that are of interest to the membership in Columbia county, as well ain all parts of the state. Here after an assessment of twenty -five cents a year will be levied on each member of the order for the support of the Udil bellows orphanages the amount to be divided in proportion to the number of inmates in each home. At present about one hun dred and thirty orphans are being cared for in these homes, and the twenty five cent assessments will pro dure an annual revenue of about $26,000. The per capita tax paid by each lodge to the grand lodge lias been ten cents each six months, but this has been changed, and the semi annual payment will bs eleven cents in the future. A change was also ordered in the constitution of subor dinate lodges, whereby funeral bene fits will be raised by direct assess ment on the members, or by a higher rate of dues instead of taking funeral benefits iron! the general funds of the lodge, as is n w the practice. The encampment branch of the order has always levied special assessments for funeral benefits. Customer catarrh. -I want a remedy for Drug Clerk All right, sir. Here's a blood tonic that is advertised to build up the constitution. customer Young man, do you think 1 m going to dose myself with a blood tonic for months, just on the chance of it doing me some good ? Not much ! I want immediate relief; besides, catarrh is a local affection, and no tonic or blood purifier ever made, can cure it. Here's 50 cents. Let me have Ely's Cream Balm. It's the only thing 1 know of to cure an attack of catarrh. Did you ever notice the difference between a lady and a gentleman in mounting a bicycle ? The lady stops, adjusts her skirts, puts her foot upon a pedal, gives a little spring, settles lightly upon the saddle, and away she goes I The man grabs the handle bars, stretches himself out behind the machine, puts one foot upon, the step, hops along on one leg like a lame ostrich, gives a jump, lands 44 ker plunk " in the saddle, kicks about to find the pedals and then goes wobbling alone for a rod or so before he gets his centre of gravity located. Some light witted folk have again sprung that silly question as to whether the nineteenth century ends with the year 1899 or with the end of 1900. Does 99 make 100 ever? Well, no. Just the same, then, 1899 does not make 1900. The nineteenth century began with the year 1801. It ends the 31st day of December, 1900. SHERIFF'S SALE. By virtue of a writ cf Fl.
