    THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOMSBUHG, PA.
DOHl'3 FOB THE SUMMER GIRL.
Don't swner.
Don't use slang.
Don't a (Tact a mannish gait.
Don't think to bo up-lo iLift
means to be unladylike.
Don't think when you cross .1
hotel lobby that you are the cynosure
of all eyes.
Don't imagine when a man
stares at you that he is necessarily ad
miring you.
Don't, when you are with a man,
walk two paces in advance of him ;
you don't wan't your escort to be
mistaken for a lackey.
Don't talk loud for the benefit of
those aronnd you.
Don't talk about people who arc
present j indeed, it is safer not to
talk about people at all.
Don't stop talking and stare
when a celebrity or a particularly wcll
drcsscd woman passes ; cultivate the
art of seeing without looking.
Don't stride into the long dining
room as if you were walking for
national glory on the Olympian race
course.
Don't make some trivial pretext
to leave your chaperonc at the dining
room door, so that you can walk in
alone and thereby attract all eyes to
yourself.
Don't imagine that a well-bred
girl is ever anything but unconscious,
modest and ladylike, or that the loud,
self-assertive, conspicuous young wom
an is ever mistaken for anything but
the spurious imitation.
THEY BOBROWED $90,000-
It was learned on Friday that the
commissioners have borrowed $90,
000 to meet the current expenses of
the county business. The drain on
the county treasury was quite heavy
the past two yeais because of the pay
ment of $10,000 for the new court
house plans, $25,000 to detectives
and detective agencies for running
down murderers in the county and
:5t!icr big expenses which had to be
paid. The commissioners expect to
pay back most of the borrowed money
from the taxes to be collected this
year. The statements of increase of
indebtedness of the county were filed
on June 18, aSos, June 23, 1895 and
April 23, 1896, in the office of the
clerk of the courts, but nothing was
said publicly about it and the fact
was not known until a Wilkes-liarre
reporter happened to come across the
cnteries. The sum of $30,000 was
borrowed on each of the dates named
above. The money was furnished by
a Wilkes-Earrc bank. The action of
the commissioners in keeping this im
portant matter secret is commented
upon in all parts of the county, and
they are criticised without stint by
many of the taxpayers.
The unearthing of the facts in the
case is a creditable stroke of journal
istic enterprise and is proof of tiie
oft-repeated statement that news
papers are the best safeguards of pub
lic affairs. Freeami Tribune.

A Marble Bridge.
Pink Stone Structure Over the Tennessee
River at Knoxvilto.
The new bridge to be erected over
the Tennessee River, at Knoxville,
will be a novelty. It is to be built
entirely of pink marble. It will be
1600 feet long from "out to out" of
abutments, and 240 feet long in the
main spans of arch, which, it is claim
ed, is 20 feet longer than the longest
arch in the world. It will rise at the
crown of the channel spans 105 feet
above the water, making it a decided
ly imposing structure. It is to be a
solid marble bridge from side to side,
with a 50-foot roadway 100 feet above
water. The arches will be eight feet
deep at the keystone, 15 feet at the
skewbacks or spring lines, and will
spring from piers 30 feet high and 40
feet wide. The piers go to solid rock,
the substructure limestone, 12 feet
below the water surface at the bridge
site. The arches and spandrel filling
will be constructed of concrete. The
parapet walls will be constructed of
sawed marble slabs, with heavy blocks
on pilasters every fifteen feet, pro
jecting above the wall proper and
living a semicastcllated effect.

Cats Brfrg a Dollar Apiece in the State
(
of Washington.
Sharon, Pa., has gone into the
wholesale cat exporting business. A
West Middlesex citizen recently re
ceived a letter from Horatio Randall
of Spokane Falls, Wash., who asked
that as many cats as could be gather
ed together be sent to him. He fur
ther stated that $1 would be paid for
every cat large enough to kill the
gonners. which were destroying tne
"ops in that state.
The boys in Middlesex were told
of his offer and a big cat hunt was
started. Old tomcats, tabbies, house
pets, mongrels and every other kind
of feline were collected before njght
and boxed. A count showed that
there were no in all. Before they
were shipped inquiries were made for
more than one darling Tom, but in
the confused mass no one cat could
be singled out. New York World.
Tasini on Ukr-r Eolkt Law.
At I'.bensburg, not long ago, Judge
llaiker put on record an (.pinion
which is of much interest, since it in
volves a point in the interpretation of
the Baker ballot law. Following is a
condensation: "In recontested elec
tion for supervisor of Fast Taylor
township, John Keiper was an inde
pendent candidate, and .therefore his
name' was not printed on the ticket,
aifd four persons who wrote his name
in the column provided for that pur
pose did not mark a cross after it.
These tickets were rejected by the
election officers. This was wrong, as
the Act expressly says it is not neces
sary to mark with a cross in such
cases."
The counting of these votes elects
Keiper by two votes.
If You Will Use a Little Reasoning
and not be influenced by the claim
that catarrh is a blood disease, you
can easily prove that catarrh is clima
tic. Have you not the severest ca
tarrhal attacks during winter and
spring, and have you but little evi
dence of catarrh during the summer ?
Yes. Well, this proves it is a climatic
disorder, inflaming the membrane ot
the nasal passages. It is a waste of
time and money to invest in blood
remedies. The proper treatment is a
local application, and the most prompt
to cure is that popular remedy, Ely's
Cream Halm.
Deputy Attorney General Elkin
has give an opinion in which he de
cides that county commissioners can
have forest incendiaries punished.
Mr. Elkin states that the law imposes
upon county commissioners the duty
of appointing persons under oath to
ferret out and have punished all
persons who willfully or otherwise
cause the burning of timber lands and
to take measures to have such fires
extinguished where it can be done,
the expense to be paid out of the
county treasury.
