Takinjr, a Long Bleep-
The physicians of Wyoming county
are greatly puzzled ove r the pi t u'i.u
case of Miss l ean Isarton, ngtI 20,
who has been .asleep continuously
since Nov. 28uru1 win shows no sins
of awakening. The young worn in Ims
always been in good health and never
slept longer than usual.
I lUn the morning of November 2",
when she did not arise at the usual
time, her mother, M-s Henry l!arton,
one of Centre Moreland's prominent
residents, called her, but she continu
ed to sleep on. The mother felt no
alarm, until a couple of hourj later,
when she again called her daughter
but could not arouse her. A doctor
who was sent for suggested that she
be allowed to sleep during the day
and to awaken naturally.
She was undisturbed, but the day
passed and she still slumbered. She
has not awakened since, and every
effort made by the doctors to arouse
her has been unavailing. I Icr breath
ing is regular, her pulse a little below
normal and her mind still acts, as
evidenced by her dreams, in which
she talks." She is losing weight some
what and her parents are afraid that
she will gradually waste away and die-
The good and benevolent people
of Pottsville are setting an example
that tne people ot other towns, in the
country, by following, would not only
enjoy their bounteous spread on
Christmas day with better relish, but
would shed a ray of sunshine in the
homes of those who are unable to
provide these things for the little ones,
that makes Christmas the day of all
days. The people of Pottsville urged
on by its enterprising newspapers, are
Taising a tund for the purpose of pro

sufficient to fill the stockings of the

to emulate the example, so that there
will be no home in our town that

Tax Received From Playing Cards
and Cigarettes.
The large number of packs of play
ing cards used in the United States
during a single year can be estimated
when it is known that there is an in
ternal revenue tax of two cents a
pack, and that last year the govern
ment derived $382,402.50 from it.
ThM represents 38,240,250 packs.
Speaking of internal revenue figures
it will perhaps be interesting to know
that last year the tax on cigarettes
netted $1,666,922 during the year, an
increase of $74,5" over last 'ear:
The total number of cigarettes taxed
was 3,328,477,677, or about 10 each
for every male inhabitant of the coun
try. The total revenue from tobacco
in the last year amounted to
$29.74-97
To Make Hens Lay.
A Reading dispatch says some valu
able advice to farmers is given by G.
H. D. Line, who is a great chicken
raiser and egg producer in lower
Alsace. His plan in brief is to make
hens work for a living. Mr. Line
says : " It is necessary to make hens
scratch for a living. I accomplish
this by feeding corn on the cob in
stead of shelling it. I take what I
consider a necessary number of ears,
tKm itr into small parts and
throw them in to the chickens, leaving
the erains of com on the cob. 1 nis
makes them work in order to secure a
meal, and work of this kind is abso
lutely requisite to the production of
eggs I have observed- this principle
of feeding for some years and have
been satisfied with the results, because
my hens lay in fall and winter, when
eggs are high in price.
Double Pay fcr Christmas.
Committees from the blast furnace.
men's federation of the biienango v
ley on Monday gave notice to the
officials of the seventeen furnacs that
has created a great stir in iron circles.
'They demand that they receive one
and a half day's pay for working on
Sundays and other legal holidays,
except Christmas and Fourth of July,
when they expect double pay. '1 his is
equal to a 15 per cent, advance. 1 ne
officials positively refuse to consider
the proposition and a strike is immi
nent. About 5000 men are involved.

oxygen starvation
Yon can starve the body in more ways than one ;
you can give it food and not feed it. It ncds oxygen.
I he oxygen you get from the air is carried to all parts

are deficient in blood, vc call it poor blood, and it I
