Coi.umiiian : While reading the Columbian to day, I thought how nice it waj to read a good home paper when in a strange place, and far from home and friends, and I felt like writing to the Editor telling him how much I appreciate the Coi.umiiian. It is as good as a dozen letters from " Old Columbia." Florida is Indeed the " Land of Flowers." The woods are full of them. The yards are brightened by the lovely roses aud lilies. The weather is delightful, just cool enough to be nice. We had several days rain last week, but it cleared oft warm in spite of the weather prophets predictions for cold. The cotton is nearly all gathered, cot ton sells at five cents per pound be fore it is ginned. They raise a fine quality of cotton here, the long staple. It takes a long time for the crop to mature, it is nearly eight months from the planting until it is all gathered. Watermelons are raised in great num bers, and after the watermelon season is over the sugar-cane comes in. They can raise fine cane here. I saw some over ten feet high and twenty two joints in one cane. We have sugar boilings and all the syrup we want to eat. Large quantities of pea nuts are raised some fatten their hoi;s on them. Sweet potatoes are plenty and sell ior from twenty-five to forty cents per bushel. Irish potatoes are raised too, but they do not turn out very well and are apt to rot. They are hard to keep. They sell for from one dollar to one dollar and twenty cents per bushel. They raise great quantities of cow peas, also beans. Cabbage, raJishe?, turnips and tomatoes can be raised easily. The first three are being planted now. Rye and oats can be grown here but not enough to supply thi home market. Corn does mid dling well. The finest fruits can be raised, pears, peaches, plums, grapes, figs, pomegranates, persimmons, ber ries, lemons and oranges, and black berries and huckleberries also. Straw berries are ripe now. Near Lawtey in Bradford Co., about twenty miles from here they raise them to ship. Here they raise enough for the home market. Oranges are not very plenty this season, but they are budding the Satsuma orange on the trees that were frozen down last winter. They are a hardier variety than the other. MacClenny is thirty miles west of Jacksonville, on the Florida, Central & Peninsula R. R. It is the County Seat of Baker Co. We are about four miles from the Georgia line and twenty miles from the Okefinoke Swamp. MacClenny has about four hundred inhabitants. One Temperance hotel, six Churches and about thirteen stores and other places of business. Baker Co. is saiJ to be the healthiest county in the state. No ague or chills and tever. and the salt ( also the pineries) air sometimes from the Ocean, other times from the Gulf, make it a good resort for people suf fering from the pulmonary diseases, I am teaching school now, as my letter is already lengthy I will tell you about the schools some other time. ' Yours Respectfully, Lizzie Kline. Chicago a Romantic Place. " Won't you always tuck my hand kerchiefs in my pocket for me ?" said Nathan Ladon. of Menominee, Wis., as he looked Jown at pretty Mary Frank, manager of Siegel, Cooper & Co's handkerchief counter, in Chicago, who was coyly poking a bit of blue bordered linen which he had just pur chased into the breast pocket of his coat. Why, I should be glad to sell you handkerchiefs at any time." said Miss Frank, blushing furiously and pretend ing hot to understand. " No ; that isn't the idea," respond ed Mr. Ladon. " I want to buy your handkerchiefs all the rest of your life. MaylT " Well, I I guess you may," replied Mary, continuing to bush. That settled it. Miss Frank took off her apron, and Mr. Ladon paid for his handkerchiefs. Mary went upstairs and told the employers she would have to leave, for she had "received a better offer." Mr. Ladon, who is a wealthy dry of Menominee, im patiently awaited her appearance, and on her return the couple at once started for the office of the County Clerk, where they were married. ' A GOOD INDICATION. Medical practitioners of prominence are prescribing for the cure of diseases springing from derangements of the digestive organs, Dr. David Kennedy s Favorite Remedy This professional endorsement is justified by the fact that no other preparation has been found so efficacious in that class of disorders even in the most advanced ami severe cases. It has cured gravel in the kidneys, stone in the bladder and inflammation of the Kidneys, where all other medicines had failed. All druggists sell it. 2t- Children Cri for Pitcher's Castorla AN A Unique Pen. Henry Pearson, a young man who occupies the position of bookkeeper for a grocery establishment in St. Paul, uses perhaps the most novel pen in cxistancc. Pearson has allowed the nail of his middle finger to grow to the length of a full inch, and this he has whittled down till it has exactly the appca.ance of an old fashioned quill pen. Pearson says his pen has many advan tages over any other which he ever used, the chief of these being that it was always "at hand." A neat silver ferrule, or rather an elongated thim ble, protects the pen when not in use, and Pearson says it writes for an in credible time without having to be trimmed or repaired. Philadelphia Timet. GRAVES TOO BH ALLOW. They Must Be Six Feet Deep In Cities and Four Feet In the Country. The state board of health, at its meeting in Harrisburg on Friday, adopted a resolution requiring graves for human beings to be at least six feet deep in populous and four teet in rural districts. The board learned that bodies were buried under a fcot of earth in Pittsburg cemeteries. The responsibility of tanneries In the matter of creating nuisances and the danger to human life arising from infectious matter, deaths having re suited from bites of flics which he had fed upon putrid matter from tanneries at Blossburg, will be investigated. Dr. Lee, the secretary, in his re port says : " Diphtheria continues to be the most serious scourge trom which our people now suffer, the board having been called upon for advice or execu-l tive action in thirty six outbreaks. The number of cases in the city of Philadelphia has been 3,423, with 1,247 deaths, as compared with t,K9 and 1,047 deaths in the year previous, and this notwithstanding the employ ment of the anti diphtherctic serum by a very considerable proportion of physicians. Up to the present time statistics appear strongly confirmatory of the value of this agent. Until, however, we can educate our masses into the same wholesome belief in and dread of the infectiousness of this disease that they now entertain with regard to smallpox, we must expect to see it reap a large harvest. The body must be well nourished now, to prevent sickness. If your appetite is poor take Hood s Sarsapa rilla. On a Long Tramp, Toe, the Pinman, his wife and dog, are on their way to San Francisco. Toe hopes to win a $5,000 wager by walking from Boston to San Francisco and back. The tramp began October lit, but no time is given for the return. He is under contract to sell 2,000,000 papers of pins and 3,000,000 lead pencils, for which if successful in his trip and sales he will receive an ad ditional $14,000 on his return. He is allowed $2 per day out of his sales for expenses, the rest of which he re turns to Boston. If he is successful in accomplishing the trip, he expects to clear at least $25,000, while if he fails he looses all. His wife is about 30 and will accompany him all the way The Court's First Decision. The Superior Court handed down its first decision last Monday, the oninion of the court being delivered by Tudge, Wickham. The court re verses the finding of common pleas court Nof 1 of Philadelphia in the suit brought by the Benevolent Order of Active Workers against John i Smith, The amount involved in the suit is very small, yet the principle is of ereat importance and probably has a bearing upon a number of other cases. The Columbian is sent gratis to all ministers in the county, and in re turn for this favor all we ask of th ministers is to furnish us with the of anv deaths where they are called upon to officiate. Showers, Elderton, Pa.: "For many years my greatest enemy has been organic heart disease. LUZERNE'S REOORD Twenty-One Murders Confined In Jail at Wilkes-barro Five Convictod. There Luzerne are now confined in the county prison twenty one murderers. Four have been convicted of murder in the first degree, and are now awaiting sentence, while one, William Perm Bowman, aged nineteen years, has been sentenced to death and is awaitine execution. Never efore in the history of the county has so many murderers been confined in her prison at one time. I he citizens of Columbia County after reading the above article, have reason to be thankful that they live in County where crimes is practically unknown. The National Sonata. When Congress convenes in De cember the Senate will be made up as follows: Republicans, 42; Demo crats, 37; Populists. 8. There will be one vacancy in Dcleware. To this Dupont will probably be admitted giving the Republicans 43. The two Senators to be elected in Utah will give them 45, or just one-half the complete Senate of 90 members. As the Vice-President, the presiding offi cer, is a Democrat, the Republicans cannot control the Senate without the vote of a Populist or Silverite. For all party purposes except free coinage Stewart and Jones, of Nevada, are Republicans, and can undoubtedly be lepended on to vote on that side. 1 Irby and Tillmtn, classified as Popu lists, are Democrats on some ques tions, but their votes would not give the Democrats control. The Democratic loss of two and probably three Senators in the elec tions on Tuesday in Ohio, Maryland and Kentucky will assure the Re publicans control on the 4th of March, 1897. A Wise Reproof. An exchange advises its readers, in view of near approach of winter, not to ship a big box of clothing and pro visions a thousand miles away when there is a little boy freezing just around the corner, probably within a few feet of you. It is all right to send help away but take care of the destitute at your own door before you go any further away. To Determine the Speed. A person on a train will notice, if listening closely, a click as each rail is passed. If you take out your watch and count the number of clicks in 20 seconds you will have the number of miles at which the train is going an hour. This is always true as the rails are of uniform length. It is a system that is used by railroad men when no register is at hand. A Great Offer.
