Flowers wi'.h woody stems, such as roses, chrysanthemums, etc., may be kept in water a long time bv notchintr the stalk from ths bottom nearly to the bloom at intervals of about three fourths of an inch. They are thus enabled to suck up more water than they can from the cut stalk alone. At this season when flowers are getting scarce it is desirable to keep them as long as possible. Voters in the election districts of Roaring Creek, Columbia county, had no time last week to exercise their sovereign privilege. The poll books and ballots were returned the day after election with the explanation that the voters were to busy shocking corn to attend the election, and no one could be prevailed upon to serve as judge or clerk. The above article appeared in the Daily Local of Ashland, last Friday. We don't know where they obtained their information upon which ths arti cle was based, but the person who furnished it, should be made to feel the effects of the law in regard to furnishing false statements to newspa pers. It is absolutely false in every particular. Newspaper proprietors and editors should satisfy themselves beyond any doubt as to the truth of such statements before giving them publicity. It may however originated in the fertile mind of the editor. Washington Camp, No. 540, P. O. S. of A., of Catawissa, has secured Miss S. Clara Leighner, of Slippery Rock. Massachusetts Women Won't Vote, The vote in Massachusetts, last Tuesday, on the question of woman suffrage, was very significant; and shows the women of that State to take very little interest in conferring the right of suffrage on their own sex. The figures show that in 19 cities, 10,896 registered, but only one-third of them went to the polls and voted in favor of municipal suffrage. In two cities scarcely one ninth voted, and in one, Fall River, only 300 voted of 2,127 registered. The test of woman suffrage in Massachusetts was the severest blow the cause has ever received. Nowhere was it more ably championed with so little result. Doylestown Democrat. The Magic Touch OF Hood's Sarsaparilla You smile at the idea. Under a recent act of the Supreme Court, the modern roller process, used in many flouring mills in the country, has been declared an infringement on a patent issued to one, Samuel M. Ban, in 1878. Later he assigned it to II. B. and L. B. Keiper, of Lan caster, who brought suit to recover damages for the infringement. The Court has ruled that every mill, using the process, must pay an indemnity of $100. We understand that there are several mills in Colum bia County that will come under the ban. There is talk that all owners, who are not in any of the miller's associa tions in the State, will organize to fie;ht the levy. Several of the Colum bia County mills belong to associations that have already made settlements. For lieu of Sooiety. There is nothing as good as a twenty-five cent bottle of Ely's Pineola Balsam, which is soothing to the throat and lungs. It will relieve the cough at once and in a few days you will almost forget that you had a cough. Do You Want Holiday Trade?
