Wide Tires for Country Eoads.
The prospect for improved road
legislation at the present session of the
Pennsylvania State Legislature does
not appear to be very bright. The
Grigshy bill, which was defeated in
the House this week, but has revived
bv the adoption cf a motion to recon
sider, has merit and would be an ad
vance on the present road law, but it
falls far short of the demand of the
times. 1 here are several other pend
ing road measures, but not one of
them is comparable to the New Tersev
law, which is giving that State the best
roads in the Union. Good roads can
not be made without the expenditure
of considerable money, and for that
reason they will not be undertaken by
the localities without State aid. As
just now the condition of the State
finances counsels economy and dis
courages embarking on new enterpris
es involving State expenditure, it is
probable that the advent of the era of
good roads in Pennsylvania must
await the dawn of better times.
Representative Harvey is of opinion
that whether we have good roads or
not we should have one of their inci
dents wide tires. His bill allowing
a rebate of one-fourth of their road
tax to all who use draft wagons with
tires not less than three inches in
width seems in a fair way to eet
through. The cost of improved roads
makes it advisable to protect them by
discouraging the use of the narrow,
knife-like tires that cut up our roads
so badly. The Broad Street omnibus
es are much less severe on the aspha't
pavement of that highway since Coun
cils compelled the company to use
wide tires. With wide tires in general
jse on our country roads, even as they
are now, they will be improved, since
they will not be so easily and so gen
erally cut up in wet weather, and the
improved stone roads when they come
will find vehicles constructed for their
preservation instead of for their in
mediate destruction. If the Legisla
ture gives us no other road legislation
it will accomplish something if it pass

Printing in Oolors.
On Tuesday March 19th, a number
of people met at the house of James
S. Campbell of I ishinticreek Town
ship. The occasion was the tenth
anniversary of the marriage of Mr and
Mrs. James S. Campbell.
After the arrival of the guest, when
congratulations had been extended to
the happy couple, and introductions
had passed between those who had
not met before, we were summoned
to the dining room, where we found
a table spread with the good things of
life, which I presume all enjoyed.
1 am judging others by myseir in
this matter. The good things of the
table is one thing that is particularly
attractive o me. When I said I pre
sumed all enjoyed the repast, I was
speaking from my own experience,
and not from observation, as during
that part of the programme I was at
tending strictly to business, and had
no time to watch others.
After paying our respects to the
good things of the table, another treat
awaited us in the shape of some ex
cellent music rendered by Mrs. Jennie
Weitsel. I think I may say for all,
we are much obliged to you.
There were some expected, who
failed to put in an appearance, I
shall take this opportunity to tell them
what they missed. They missed a
good dinner, good music, and last but
not least an introduction to good
society. This last may be the miss of
their lives.
The Mrs. was the recipient of a
number of useful and valuable pre
sents, with which she seemed highly
pleased. But she seemed most of all
pleased, that so many of their friends
honored the occasion with their pres
ence.
The giving of presents was a part
of the programme in which I failed to
participate. I did not exactly under
stand what was expected of gentlemen
on such occasions. I hope my friends
will not slight me on similar occasions
on account of this little oversight on
my part. I shall better understand
my duty in the future. Wishing those
people continued happiness and pros
perity, 1 now bid them adieu.
A Guest.

A well selected text Is half of the ser

to be good. The text of this article is a
plain simple statement that proves itself
in the reader's own mind without arjru
ment. The text is " Good health is bet
ter than great riches."
Without health nothing really matters
very much. A hacking cough takes all
the beauty out of a landscape or a sunset.
Erysipelas or eczema will spoil the enjoy
ment of sprightly conversation, of a beau
tiful concert, of a wonderful painting.
The biggest bank account in the world
won't pav a man for his health, but a
very small amount of money will make
him healthy and keep him healthy.
Most all bodily troubles start In the
digestive or respiratory organs. It is
here that Improper living first makes an
opening for disease. The development
differs as constitutions and temperaments
differ. The causes are almost identical.
