Hermann Oelrichs maintains, and used to back his opinion with a 500 wager, that there is no authentic case on record of a shark that ever ate a mm. Quite recently, however, off the Dry Tortugas, in the Mexican Gulf, a shark was caught, apparently suffering with a huge gumboil and hunting for a toothpick or a dentist. When opened, the head of a Texan steer, with both horns intact and in place, was found embedded in the monster's jaw. Sharks should steer clear of such dilemmas. But then it is the nature of sharks, human as well as aquatic, to bite off more than they can swallow or digest. iV. Y. Jour ual. The Hop Drummer's Reception. A story comes from Germany to the effect that a dealer in hops when paying his first visit to a famous brew ery in South Germany, was about to enter the office, when he noticed a plate with the inscription ; " Hop travelers upstairs." Concluding there from that a special room was set apart for interviewing travelers he took the hint, and on reaching the top of the stairs he found himself in a long pass age, the walls of which were adorned at intervals with the image of a hand pointing in one direction. At the end of the corridor another hand pointed to a second flight of steps leading downwards. At the bottom of the steps a hand pointed to a door, which he opened and found himself in the street. A paper before us calls attention to the fact that there are two things in which the Republican party has be come quite noted. The first is, it created over 3,000 millionaires since it came into power, and during the same time it created about 10,000,000 tramps and 30,000,000 more poor men who can scarcely keep soul and body together long enough to keep from going to the poor house, No other party can say half as much. Ux. A strike was ordered on February aoth in New York city, calling off all carpenter-", plasterers, plumbers, gas fitters, and sheet-iron workers. It is said to affect all building operations in New York, Brooklyn and Jersey City ; and that from 20,000 to 25,000 men were called out and away from their work. This strike started with the Klectrical Worker's Union and it is called out of sympathy for them.
