Two new Chinese laundries have
been opened, one in Solleder's build
ing, and one on Iron street.
The contract for the stone work at
the river bridge was completed on
Tuesday. Several spans of iron work
are up.
The contract for furnishing station
ery, pens, pencils, &c, to the public
schools of Bloomsburg, has been
awarded to J. W. Moycr.

Not counting some few agricultural
fairs in the State that have weakened
and therefore have no regular annual
exhibitions, there are still about 50

We notice that bicycles are sold
under guarantee. This indicates that
there is a chance to get deceived in
buying bicycles as well as in sleek
looking horses and watches. We no
tice further that keen competition is
tending to help this popular means of
locomotion find its proper level in
point of price.
On Saturday afternoon Judge
Millard's house, located at Willow
Grove, was found to be on fire. The
judge was absent at the time, but
hearing of it reached home quickly
and found ready help from neighbori
and friends near at hand. Consider
able damage to buildings and furniture
was done however before the fire was
subdued.

the Atlantic ocean, and we leel assur
ed there are quite a number, they
have a good chance to do so on the
Pennsylvania Railroad Excursion on
August 1st.
If a passenger can now cross the
ocean on what is called steerage
passage for $8.64 the cut in the rate
may be attributed to competition
that is the wholesome leveler of things
commercial and nautical. It docs not
necessarily imply that there is no
profit in that rate for the haulers.
It rather indicates the immensity of
the profit in the business heretofore,

As the workmen on the river bridge
were rowing along one evening recent
ly, the oar brought up some copper
wire about an eighth of an inch in
diameter. They began pulling it in
and coiling it as they went. It seemed
to be a continuous piece long enough
to reach from shore to shore as they
found upon gathering it all in. It was
believed to have been an outline upon
which short lines and hooks had
sometime been tied for the purpose
ot tislung in defiance of law.
SHOOTING MATCH.
The third prize shooting match for
the Columbia County championship
medals will be held at Bloomsburg,
on Friday, August 3d, 1894. Shoot
ing to commence at 9 o clock A. M.
This shooting will be limited to those
residing within the county. After
shooting for medals a sweepstakes
shooting at pigeons and targets will
be held the remainder of the day. All
marksmen are cordially invited, and a
large turnout is expected.

Low Bate Sea Shore Excursion, August 1
The Pennsylvania Railroad Com
pany announces that on August 1st
an unusually low rate excursion will
be given persons desiring to visit the
sea shore, and it promises to be the
most popular tour of the season. The
round trip fare from Catawissa and
Riverside is $4.00. Tickets will be
good, going August 1st, on regular
trains leaving Wilkes-Barre 7:25 a. m.
or 10:15 a- m Passengers will have
the privilege of stopping over night
in l'hiladelphia and resume their jour
ney on any regular train for the sea
shore. Tickets will be good for pass
age to either Atlantic City, Cape May,
Sea Isle City, Ocean City, Anglesea
or Wildwood, and good to stop off in
Philadelphia in either direction within
limit. For further particulars apply
to ticket agents.

For the sole purpose of inducing
the Senatorial trust combine to remain
firm in its hostility to tariff reform Re
publican newspapers insist that the
President, in his letter to Chairman
Wilson, has insulted the Senate. He
did nothing of the kind, and il he had
done so that would be no more than
the whole country has done. It is a
Senate, or rather a combine of " con
servatives," that has not earned any
body's respect. The Patriot.
In a fight among Hungarians near
Pittston a woman was killed. These
are the people brought into this State
by protected manufacturers and mine
owners, imported to mine coal on
which there is a duty " for the protec
tion of American labor." These are
the men imported to dig iron ore, up
on which there is a duty, also " for the
protection of American labor." They
have driven and were intended to
drive American labor out of the field.
Why should the duty on coal and iron
continue ? Why should not the house
conferees continue to insist that these
two articles be placed on the free list?

Gospel Meetings of the T- M. 0- A.
Inasmuch as a number of students
of Lafayette College will be in Blooms
burg next week to conduct a series of
Gospel Meetings in the interest of the
Y. M. C. A., the Pastors' Union at a
special meeting, held July 23d, unani
mously decided to co-operate with the
same, and all the members of the
various churches are respectfully call
ed upon to do likewise, so that these
meetings may be the means of becom
ing a great spiritual awakening in this
community. Meetings will be held in
several of the churches during the
week and in the Auditorium of the
Normal School on Sunday afternoon
and evening. A schedule of these will
be announced in a few days.

Laws of Supply and Demand.
In the face of hard times Reading'!
coal output for June beats all previous
records, it is said. It reached 1,247,207
tons, being 77,173 tons more than
ever before. The general boom of
business in consequence of the demand
for the commodities of life which
have been tied up by the strikers, and
in consequence of the general close
up ot our cunning high protectionists,
will soon be felt, now that the pro
tectionist has won the victory in the
halls of legislation. But would the
high protectionist avert tariff reforma
tion proper in the near future he
must win at the polls and change the
political complexion of the House
and also of the Senate. In other
words he must win and not lose at
the polls on the very tariff issue that
defeated him when Cleveland was
elected. We are inclined to doubt
that the masses will be satisfied with
such half way tariff reformation as
the present bill will give us even if it
passes without further emasculation
through conference committees. The
sovereign demand is imperial when it
knows for certain what it wants
Though politicians often delude, mis
lead and fool the sovereign power,
yet in the language of Lincoln, " they
can't fool all the people all the time,"
though they can fool some of the
people some of the time and some of
the people all the time.
Nor are the laws of supdIv and
demand entirely within the control of
our politicians and speculators who
of course would be pleased to control
them. There is evidently a higher
and contounding influence wisely ope
rating among selfish and vain humanity
and it not only confounds the wise
but as Paul says, " it enlightens and
elevates the tooiish."
