There has been more building and
painting and repairing and general
brightening up in Bloomsburg this
spring than for mary years before.
This does not look like hard times.
The city papers of Monday the ist
were the last to reach Bloomsburg un
til Wednesday night, but they con
tained sufficient report of devastation
to account for the delay of mails.

Besides those named la t week as
the owners of bird dogs, may be named
Phin. Ileddens who owns a fine bred
Irish setter, well trained. Joseph Bidle
man also owns a pup which will no
doubt develop into a hunter. It is a
thorough bred setter, and Joe claims
that it will beat anything in town, in
time.
Mr. James Magee's new residence
on First street, at the head of West

commands a magnificent view on both
sides, up the creek and down the val

The wonder is that some cne did not
see the beauty of the location years
ago. .
The name of Hon. Andrew L. Fritz
is announced this week as a candi
date for Representative. He has been
a hard working member and watched
closely the interests of his constituents.
The custom of the Democratic paity
in this county is to give her repre
sentatives two terms in succession,
and Mr, Fritz is justly entitled to a
second term without opposition.
The only Phila. paper that reached
Town last Tuesday was one that J.
M. Gidding & Co., the Clothiers, had
posted up on their plate glass windows.
It was eagerly read by crowds who
were anxious to hear the latest news
about the flood. It certainly showed
enterprising spirit, and we'll jot another
mark down for Gidding & Co.
GBEATLY "iMPEOVED.
It is with much gratification that
we hear from many readers of The
Columbian that they observe marked
improvement in the contents of the
paper of late. It is our desire and in
tention that such shall be the case,
and it was for that purpose that the
services of an able and experienced
writer and reporter have been secured
by the employment of the present
assistant editor, Mr. I. J. Jamison
The mechanical appearance has also
been improved by new head letters,
and by printing the name of the paper
at the head of each page, and by
numbering the pages. When the de
mand upon our columns for adver
using space is great, we make it up
to our readers by issuing an enlarged
paper, a practice indulged in by no
other paper in the county.
The office has been newly painted
and papered, and generally over
hauled, and will compare favorably
with any printing establishment in
eastern Pennsylvania. This, togethe.'
the fact that the jobbing and adver
tising patronage were never better,
encourage us to say that still further
improvements may be looked for.
The Columbian ought to go into
every house in the county.
CHINESE SAORED BIRDS.
This is the last week for the Chinese
Sacred Birds which have been in the
window of Gidding & Co., the Cloth
ier. Saturday night will be their last.
They will be followed by some new
attraction the following Monday.

HE 18 A CANDIDATE.
Benton, May at, '94.
Editor Columbian ;
I ask a little space in your paper
for the publication of a few lines in
behalf of myself I understand that
there has been a report noised around
that I had withdrawn from the field
as a candidate for Sheriff. Now I
wish to say to the voters of Columbia
County that it is false, and was raised
by some one of the other candidates
to injure me during the campaign.
Probably if I would drop off, some
one would feel more safe. But I am
in the field and intend to stay there.
Six years ago I was a candidate for
Sheriff and was defeated and took
that defeat as any honest Democrat
should. I stood right with the Democratic-
party and rules, voted for the
nominees. Now should not my
claim be a good one ? I think that
the Democratic voters should this
time support me, as I think my claim
is an honest one.
Alexander Knouse.
Will Not Be a Candidate.
Hon. S. P. Wolverton, member of
Congress from this district, has au
thorized us to announce that he will
not be a candidate for re election for
the third term. Of his re nomination
and re election, if he had desired it,
there 13 not the slightest doubt, but
his large law business has claims on
his time that can not be ignored, and
with the close of his present term he
will retire to private life. His public
record has been a long and profitable
one to the people, and he retires
with a record of which any man can
be justly proud. No man in Penn
sylvania stands higher than S. P. Wol
verton and his retirement from Con
gress is a public misfortune. Sun
bury Democrat.
