WARMING THE HOUSE. An Eoonomla Method for Peoplo of Modomto Moans. Tho XVrllor Considers I'ortnMn Fumnrcn Hetler mill Cherincr Than Moves Dla Brum Miowliiit I. oral loo of DllTorent I'lprn. I write for farmers and people of modornto inoarm; tlio jlan described is within tlio reach of most peoplo. For fcononiy and enso of jinttjiifr in opera tion, the portable furnaces now nnulo toy many reliable parties liaro no m p'evior. A large furnaco Is needed for a lafffi lioiiso 4'J Inches dininoler 1m on rveellent hI.o. My house Is of briclc, it-lx-ftO fecti Rtands north and fsouth, front cntranoo on north Bide; is two stories, with cellar under the whole) ground floor has parlor tlio wholo length on tho- west nide, two rooms and Inclosed porch on cast Ride; sec ond story has four chambers and bath room; both floors nru well and thor oughly warmed with one 4'J-tnoh port able furnace. The proper location of tho furnaco In tlio cellar Is of tho first importance; it should bo in the northwest corner, ns Ni) PAHLCR rovr Fid. I. the liitfli, cold winds come from that quarter, and there is no trouble to ffet Jho heat to po in u Kouthcrly direction in cold weather. After locating your furnace, U iff a hole in tho cellar bot tom where it is to stand, 8x10 foet and 2 feet deep; wall with brielt and floor .with same; this is needed to plvo a proper inclination to tho heat pipes, and to keep tl:s furnaco from bcin;; too near tho lloor above it. If there is un entry in the middle of the house put a register in tho floor at or near the north end of it; this will temper the whole house in cold weather. Heat pipes ran be taken from tlio furnace into all t lie rooms; these pipes should oil have dumpers in thorn in the cellar near tlio furnace, so as to control tlio distribution of heat to each room as it may be needed. (iood dry seasoned wood cut in one foot len.Tth'i can bo used with ffreat batisfaelion; fill tha 1'ro pot full of It, and when onco well on tiro, close oil bottom drafts; leave tho damper in Mnoke pipe open j.u.t enough to carry ol? the hinoke, and it will rim all day without any further care. Such a. fur nace can be put up complete to warm Hicha house, with heat pipes and regis ters to every room, for g:00. My fuel (hard coal) for this furnace and kitch en range costs an average of 27 cents a day throughout the year. Tho cold air is taken from out of doors on tho north side of tho house to the base of tho furnaco in a wooden box 8 by ID inches; tho box projects 18 inches from tho house, and has a partition in it -l-j feet lony; the bides of projection are cut tdopin;?, and covered with wires to keep out vermin. I!y this arrange ment ail northerly winds are caught and conducted to tlio furnace; it should have a damper in it to control tho air hupply in times' of high wind. Wo have no use for inside doors in this house. In a warm climate, I believe a fur nace in a cellar (north side) directly under tho entry, with one hot-air pipe into the entry, will be ample for warm ing this house comfortably; this can bo done for $15 or less. Fig. 1 is cellar floor, showing smoko pipe and tin pipes for eonve3'ing heat to upper floors. Tin pipes oro run up each tluo to tho second or chamber floor, which added much to the cost, as each room thus has its own indepen ent heat supply. There is one register in entry and one in dining-room on first floor; two registers in parlor on the west nide where flues are marked also two ou ond floor west, ono ir no. a. each chamber; in southeast room, first floor; a register in corner fireplace nnd snmo in southeast chamber. Tho dotted lines represent first floor divis ion of rooms. Fig. a shows portion of air box with pointed end covered with wire net ting. J. O. Williams, in Country Uen- tlcmtin. l or Milady' lair 1'uee. There aro few women who have not had at somo time or another use for a. face powder, even though as a rulo they eschew anything, on that order. A violet powder which can bo com mended is composed of wheat starch, tlireo pounds; powdered orris, half- pound. Mix together and add attar of lemon, one-eighth of an ounce; attars of bergamot and cloves, each, one-half drachm. For thoso troublesome black heads that so disfigure tho faco that is blessed with tlio most classical fea tures tho following compound works wonders: Take kaolin, four drachms; glycerine, three drachms; acetic acid, two drachms, and oil of lemon, five drops. Apply this every night au'd .f ter a few days the black specks can be easily pressed out, or most of them will even come out by washing with ptimiceKtono soap. Carved Leather Cushions.
