A CORRECTION.
In noticing the death of Daniel Ing
old in last week's issue we stated that
he was buried on the same day that
he died, believing that our information
was reliable. It was a mistake how
ever, as he died on Saturday morning
at three o'clock, and was buried on
Sunday morning at ten. There was
no intention to reflect on anyone, as
we supposed the circumstances of the
case demanded an eaily burial. We
reeret that we were led into making
an inaccurate statement, and cheer
fully make the correction.

The annual report of the Philadel
phia and Reading railroad company
and the Philadelphia and Reading
! coal and iron company for the year
ending November 30, 1893, which
will be ptesented at the annual meet
ing of the stockholders. The state
ment of the operations of the railroad
company for the year 1893 shows that
the gross earnings were $24,155,895 33;
the total working expenses, not in
cluding rentals, interest, &c, were
$16,582,195 2, thus leaving the net
earnings $7,573,700 11. From this is
to be deducted $2,907,028.91 for ren
tals of leased roads and canaU and
$5273-34-8o for interest, thus show
ing a loss for the year of $606,693.60.
For the year 1892 the report, showed
a profit of $990,736.01, thus leaving
the increase in los for this year as
compared with 1892, $597,479.61.
The statement of the operations of
the coal company for 1 893 shows that
the gross earnings were $24,586, 863 -34
; the total working expenses, not
including rentals, interest, &c, were
$23,432,672.84 ; thus leaving the net
earning for the year $ 1 , 1 04, 1 95. From
this is to be deducted inteiest charges
$1,209,844.82, thus leaving the loss
for the year $195,649.32. For the
year 1892 the loss from mining opera
tions was $313,63 72, thus leaving a
decrease in loss for the year compar
ed with 1892 of $117,514.40. The
total deficit for both companies for the
year 1893 is thus $802,342.92. The
profit for the year. 1892 is given as
$677,622.29, thus showing a loss for
1893 as compared with 1892 of $i,
469,966.2 1
Appended to the comparative state
ment of the operations of the com
panies lor the years 1892 and 1893 is
an exhaustive statement by the re
ceivers of the various transactions and
business of the company for the year.
It is stated that if the system of book
keeping in vogue during the presi
dency of Mr. McLeod had been used
this year the leport would show a sur
plus over fixed charged of 8So,i68.
93 instead of the deficit of $802,342.
92. An explanation of thj various caus
es that led up to the bankruptcy of
the companies and the appointment
of receivers is given at length. The
efforts of the receivers to pay the
most pressing liabilities and to increase
the earning capacity of the property
are dwelt on. For various reasons
their efforts were unsuccessful and
during the first five months of the re
ceivership there was an increase of
cash liabilities of $1,102,030.00. For
the four months from July 1, to No
vember 30, the decrease in excess of
current liabilities has been $1,161,
194 25, and the decrease for the whole
term of the receivership has been $59,
