typical of the Kuene than all, the tea

Still spealtitijrof the Piiuirt trousseau,
nnd its smartest representative of this
Interesting class, the tea gira-n is mod
erately plain of skirt, three full rutlles
tit tho bottom alone breaking its lino
lines. A buckle tjuito four inches lonff
iieems to fasten a wide belt of rich
brown satin. Tho stud of the pnvn
it is velvet, by tho way, but of a life'ht-
r tint is withered below tho bunt,
whieh is crossed by three rows of tho
ilnrker ruflles, witli embroidered edjres.
There Is a sfjttnro yoke of crenmy lneo
over white natin. Tho sleeves nro
full to below tho elbow, ending in
a fall of cream yellow lace, making
the hands seem ivory white by con
trast. It Is not often, perhnps, that so
heavy ti material ns velvet appears in
the tea frown; but it will be more
often this winter than ever before.
Let my ludy venture forth upon the
street and sho will be pointed out, in a
double fcenso. She is arrayed, it may
be. in one of tho new overskirts, not
full or draped or looped or caught up
In any way hut following closely tho
lines of the nnder kirt. and decorated,
if wo may use the term, with five
enormous points ranging down like
the points of a great star from the
knee almost to the hem. Tho points
are insisted upon, they are made forci
ble, they are emphasized by startling
contrasts of color. I'erhaps thoy are
pale green over very .lurk green, or
yellow over dark brown, or viea versa,
or even white contrasting sharply
with black, a favorite combination of
colors this year. With such an over
skirt are worn tho usual pufl sleeves
and perky hat.
Or tho points may bo smaller, and in
this ease there may be rullles, one,
two or three, edged with big zigzags
all pointing downward. And then tho
yoke will be pointed, too. and the lace
collarette edged with points.
Nature abhors points. In all her
laboratories sho seldom fashions one.
Hut no matter.
If overskirt points are sharp, hats
are Hat, wonderfully flat. Flat beyond
precedent. And jet nobody would
know it from their freakish variety of
hmshed outline. To have been Hat
and yet not look like it is apparently
the deceitful purpose, the daily end
and aim of h:itdom.' ' Xo hat has or
will have a crown more than half an
Inch high, many are absolutely fiat
disks of felt with no crowns at all.
Vet all have their Hut estate under tho
pale fingers of the stooping, dark-eyed
milliner, dreaming of Franco and her
beloved (iaston-or Pierre away beyond
there. Perhaps she turns tha hrn.-irl
brim sharply up at the left and accen
tuates it with aigrettes of feathers or
ribbon bows. Perhaps she leuves it
nearly flat but curls plumes cunningly
over the edge and perks pointed bow
ends straight up into tho air. Perhaps
the flaps it up in front into n wide wall
of felt over which one can scarcely seo
I ho big plumes that deck it. Most
often of all Khe pells tho brim low
over tke eyes in front and heaves it
High behind against tho plumes and
bows and bobbing things on top. And
this last is tho least trying estato of
the fiat hat.
For the average woman of to-day has
n forehead of mors than tireeian height.
This, indeed, she deftly masks beneath
clustering curls low lying against tho
white, but tho fiat hat sits too high
above her face for beauty of propor
tion. Particularly is tho stylo trying
to high foreheads when the flaring hat
brim soar aluft in front.
There cannot be such variety in
muke as in fabrics. To tho bewilder
ing kaleidoscope of fall cuts and colors
tho weaver and dyehouso chemists
have contributed more of charm than
the modiste. Heautiful in extreme are
tho shot silks, tho baset-woven ef
fects in every kind of goods, shot
cheviots and coarse "drop changennt,"
spotted muslins and tunslins sprigged
ami polka dotted, velvets, taffetas and
foulards, plushes, surahs, of names al
mo.t as bewildering as their colors.
whieh gleum und glow and dazzle in
tho muss with a glow that seems al
most imvur 1 and peculiar.
Tho trick of most of these weaves la
to drop into them, into tha most un
expected patterns and materials, hero
and there a bit, if it bo only a thread
or two, of shining silk which catches
the light ami irradiates tho whole.
You know how roses are holdinor
their own against and through all tho
chrysanthemum crazes, and orchid
! crazes and other dangers, of course?
ellow and very pale pink roses go
best with the light greens and dark
greens of tho season, and with many,
perhaps most, ot the browns and
