COLUMBIA COUNTY FAIR.
THE BEST EXHIBITION,
F.vcrything now indicates that the
Thirty-ninth annual exhibition of the
Columbia County Agricultural Society
to be held next week, October 10th to
14th, inclusive, will be the grandest
exhibition in the history of the Society,
and surpassed by none in the State.
The Committee on Grounds have re
modelled nearly all the buildings, and
provided for the increased attendance.
In the building for horses eighteen
additional stalls have been made, and
a building with nearly two hundred
stalls made for the cattle. Convenient
pens are made for sheep and hogs.
An addition of forty feet has been
made to the large stables for trotting
and running horses, thus giving a build
ing forty f.'ct wide and one hundred
feet long, conveniently arranged with
stalls. There is now accommodation
for about seventy five race horses, and
the indications are that all the stables
will be occupied. The best feature of
the present plan is that all the build
ings for poultry and stock are placed
outside the race track, and conven
iently arranged for all to see. At the
entrance to the Main Exhibition
building Messrs. Kuss and Kumer
have built large artificial stone steps
bearing their advertisement upon the
face. At the lower end of the Grand
Stand is erected a large water closet
for gentlemen. An additional exit
gate has been made upon the north
east side to aid in emptying the ground
in the evening. Eleven watch towers
have been built around the grounds,
which wi 1 be occupied by policeman,
who are expected not to leave their
fort, as the stand is provided with a
roof for shelter from sunshine and
storm. The Marshal will make hourly
tours and report whether the police
men are attending to their duty.
These stands are elevated so that po
liceman can watch what is transpiring
outside as well as inside.
The increased sums offered as priz
es will insure a large exhibit. If the
weather is favorable, we can look for
the largest attendance, and possibly
exeeed that of any in the state.
The special attractions will be the
Trof. A. L. Tolbert V Company Run
ning Combination. They have been
upon the ground for the past two
weeks and will give fine exhil.its of
hippodrome racis, hurdle races, skele
ton wagon races, and the Ladies' race
against the riderless horse. Tnere
will be two exhibitions every day be
tween heats of the races. Then
there will be the uual number of side
shows, including the Cyclorama of the
Battle of Gettysburg, and the largest
horse in America, said to weigh over
2,500 pounds and stand 20 hands
high.
Applications have been made for
space for exhibits several days in ad
vance of other years.
