A terrific cyclone passed over some
of the western states last week Thurs
day. At romeroy, Iowa, forty four
people were killed, and 108 injured.
Two hundred residences were com
pletely demolished, and all of the
churches.

The reports of President Cleveland's
ill health are greatly exaggerated.
Trie story of the cancerous growth in
his mouth is entirely untrue. He had
some trouble with his teeth, and one
of them was extracted.

Wild beasts supposed to have es
caped from a menagerie, Are roaming
at large in the northern part of Lan
caster county, and the inhabitants are
greatly alarmed.

Associate Justice Blatchford of the
United States supreme court died last
Friday. F. R. Condert of New York
is spoken of as his probable successor.

Tne coke workers and miners along
the Sewickley branch are experien
cing a season of unrest because of the
dosing of mines and blowing out of
' ovens. Over 300 ovens at Mammoth,
about 50 at Trauger and 40 at Hecla
have been banked throwing five or six
hundred men out of work. It is stat
ed that others will close next week.

Lieut. Peary and his arctic exploring
party sailed from Portland, Maine,
- last week, in the steamer Falcon which
was purchased and equipped for the
. occasion.

The Duke of Veragua, the descen
dant of Christopher Columbus, who
recently visited this country, is in
financial trouble. During his visit
' here his estates were seized by his
, creditors. A movement has been
started in Chicago to assist him finan
cially. II II II
The Infanta Eulalie has reached
her home in Spain, and declares her
self very much pleased with her visit
to America. Wonder what she thought
of the people who toadied to her and
tried to ape court manners I

D. S. Krieder, wife and five child
ren were murdered at Cando, Notth
Dakota, last week by Albert Bomber.
$er, a nephew of Krieder, who worked
tor him. The inurckier has been
captured. Krieder moved west from
Lebanon county, this state fifteen years
igo. The seven bodies were brought
back to Lebanon county for burial.

A negro named Milkr was hanged
by a mob at Eardwell, Kentucky last
Friday because lie va: suspected of
the murder of two girls named Ray.
There seemed to be no doubt of his
tjuilt, but subsequent developements
make it appear that he was not the
right man.

present at the convention of Christian
Endeavor at, Montreal, Canada. One

A charge of dynamite was exploded
last Saturday night under the home
of Rev. John Gulcz, pastor of the Po
lish church of Mt. Carmel. A por
tion of the parsonage was wrecked
and the handsome windows of the
church were shaken to pieces. Father
Gulcz fortunately was absent at the
time. The outrage was to emphasize
the demand recently made by the
parishioners for the removal of Father
Gulcz, who succeeded a priest whom
the congregation desired to retain, but
who was sent to Shamokin.

A wind storm of terrific force, fol
lowed by a heavy downpour of rain,
passed over the World's Fair last Sun
day evening, doing considerable dam
age to the diflerent buildings and to
the exhibits stored therein. No one
was hurt.

A flimsily constructed building,
erected by the Hercules iron company,
of Chicago, used as a cold storage
ware house and ice skating rink, and
situated near the Sixty-fourth street
entrance to the exposition grounds.

an hour last Monday afternoon, send
ing to death, at least eighteen men
and injuring nineteen others.
The full extent of the death wrought
may never be known, as the building
collapsed totally in so short a time
after the fire started, that many people
who entered the building hoping to
render aid betore the peril under
which they were placing themselves
was realized, were caught like lats in
t trap and went unannounced to their
doom.

Seventy five convicts in the house
of correction at Iona, Mich, attempt
ed to escape last Monday. They
were driven back and subdued by the
guards, after a hand to hand conflict.

The Sunday' attendance at the
World's Fair is not what was expected,
and is getting smaller It is probable
that some action will be taken soon,
looking towards Sunday closing.
Workingmen have not turned out as
was expected, and many of the exhibi
tors favor closing the gates on Sun
day.

Peter Baur, of Wilkes-Barre, has
been appointed special pension de
tejtive for Luzerne, Lackawanna,
Columbia and Montour counties.

Hughesville had two fires .on the
Fourth. The finishing and wareroom
of the Hughesville Furniture Co. was
burned.

It is probable that Emperor William
of Germany will visit the World's Fair
in September.

Five hundred school teachers of
Philadelphia started for the World's
Fair on Monday, in two parties.

It has been said that a French fam
ily could live well on the waste from
an American table. The foundations
have been laid in the World's Fair
grounds of a structure in which it is
intended to teach the American house
wile how to prevent this woeful waste,
and how to utilize the cheaper meats
and coarser food products in the pro
duction of appetizing and nourishing
dishes.

Mexico to the United State recently made
for fertilising and sonar refining purpose
were ten car loads ot human, said to hare
lieen obtained from ancient mounds In

Thousands of Miner Idle.
IanPEMfNO, Mich., July 10. The Mayor
of the city ha recommended that the coun
cil stop all municipal work other than
absolutely necessary, as all the money the
city can raise will he needed to support
fcle miners and their families during the
winter. The Wlnthrop mine has now
closed down and over 1,000 miners are
now idle In Ishpemlng alone, and 8,000

A Comet in the Northern Sky.
Skattle, Wash., July 10. A comet ws
visible in the Northern Sky last night
some degree below and three or four de
gree to the west of the Polar Star and
near the top of the Great Star. The comet
was seen just before 11 o'clock. The course
is downward, and it ta about 15 degrees
above the horizon. The tall is but a few
degrees In length, although the nucleus is
very bright

New York, July 10. Dr. McOlynn, who
arrived here Saturday evening and went at
once to the rierrepont House, Rrooklyn, de
clares that ha Is not yet ready to disclose
his plans for the future, and declines to an
swer questions. It is said that in the fall
he will begin the performance ot whatever
duty is assigned him.

Maybe Interstate Troubles.
New York, July 10. The lynching of
Charles J. Miller, the negro, at Hard well,
Ky., may become an Inter-State affair. He
was captured at Silkstou, iu Missouri, and
taken back to the scene of his aliened crime
without the formality of requisition. It is
said the authorities of Missouri will take
the matter up.
Shot Her Klance.
Saw Frakcwco, July 10. Late last
night Nellie Horton, a telesrnph operator
shot nnd instantly killed C. R Haua, an
Oakland motormuu in a lodging house on
Emm; street It is conjectured she de
manded Hniinn to fulfill promises and
marry her and he refused. The woman is
in custody.
Will Mot Fight on the 34th.
New York, July 10. The famous mid
dleweight, Jack Dempaey and Billy
Smith, will not meet on July 24 to con
tend for the championship of their class
and a $0,000 purse. The Coney Island
Athletic club's board of director decided

Death of Hiram Camp.
New Haven, July 10. Hiram Camp,.
ex president of the New Haven Clock com
pany, died at his home in Fair Haven late
Saturday evening. Mr. Lamp had been
in poor health for a jear or more.

John Hitchcock and George McFarland,
two gas well drillers, while making repairs
ou top ot a derrick at Portland, Iud., fell

by the storm in New York and Brooklyn
on Saturday evening are to the effect that

the damage wa not so great as first re

Stockton, Cal., was found murdered at
