only the raiddlo of tho way, and when
they meot teams they aro driven into tho

in some places tanners work out a
part of their taxes by working on tho
highways, and in other places tho town
makes a contract with a farmer to keep
the roads in repair. The farmer has no
timo for roads until bis farm work is
dono in tho fall, the worst timo in tho
year to repair roads, whon he plows and
scrapes and rounds up. During tho fall
and spring and perhaps all winter, if
tho winter is open, the new road is tho
worst on tho circuit a stretch of mud
through which all teams and foot passen-
gcrs must go. And thoy call this road

this kind of roadbuilding is practiced
tho greater is tho inconvenience, the

I lmvo uiado careful inipiiry as to tho
cost of roc'.: and ravi 1 roads and find
that tho cost will not exceed (3,000 per

$1,000,000. An indebtedness of !J.")0,000
can bo created, of which the state pays
4'5,000 Rnd the township $25,000. This
will build 25 miles of roud.
As to tho justico and equity of this
proposition, it will to remembered that
the bulk of the recent indebtedness of
the stute, now so nearly liquidated, was
contracted by loaning the credit of the
state for building railroads; that tho lien
was subsequently roleased, and thn
whole state, including all tho portions
not immediately benefited by the rail
roads, have uncomplainingly aided In
liquidating the debt.
Can any one doubt but that with such
a svstem of roads the taxable wealth
would in 20 years double in value? St.

Cut Away tha liruah at Denda.
An excellent precaution, but one rare
ly attended to. is the cuttinjr away of
brush and weed growth along the road,
particularly around the inside of a sharp
turn or bend, in order to enable one to
see if any traps are coming from the op
posite direction, for in these days of fust
drivinir. when every mnn imagines ho
owns a trotter, a narrow winding road
becomes dangorous unless means are
provided to get out of the way of the
"old ware as she tears arounu ine cor
ner.
Brush whon not cut down evory sea
son encroaches with incredible rapidity
and spreads so fast into the gutters that
if neirlected it narrows the roads percep
tibly, and the sumo thing is true of
weeds und grasu, although in a lesser
degree; they ulso should be removed at
least every year, not, however, by the
following reprehensible process, which
finds greut favor in tho eyes or ronu-
masters and farmers, and consists in
endimr out tho "boy" with a yoko of
oxen, or tho "hired man" with a teum
to run a couple of furrows up and down
tho truttera with a mow, thereby loosen
ing but not destroying ull this vegetable
growth, which is then either left to ob
struct the gutters with useless ridos
or Hung out over tho road to pack down
in all sorts of unequal masses. Har
