November is the dread of insurance men on account of the frequency of fires that mark that month. The reasons for their frequency are well known. The increased cold compels the building of new fires and the strengthening of old ones to warm homes and buildings, and this new tax upon furnaces, flues and grates is too rarely attended with an examination to discover defects. Then again the strong winds of November are ready to spread a local fire until it becomes a general conflagration. A little more care in building fires and in examining hre apparatuses would permit a large share of the waste which annually makes the month of November so disastrous. Catarrh, Hot Local, Bat constitutional. Dr. Dio Lewis, the eminent Bost on iihysician. in a magazine article says : "A radical error underlies nearly all medical treatment of catarrh. It is not a disease of the man's nose ; it is 'a disease of the man, showing itself in the nose a Local exhibition of a Constitutional trouble." Therefore, he argues, the use of snuff and other local applicat ions is wrong, and while they seem to give temporary relief, they really do more harm than good. Other lead ing authorities agree with Dr. Lewis. Hence, the only proper method of cure lor catarrh is by taking a con stitutional remedy like Hood's Sarsap arilla, which, reaching every part of the body through the blood, docs eliminate all impurities and makes the whole man healthier. It re moves the cause of the trouble and restores the diseased membrane to liti.ui Th.it the urac- tical result is proven by thousands of people who nave ueen mh vi catarrh by taking Hood'sSaisapanlla. The meeting of the Women's Mis sionary Society of the Presbyterian Church last ween Wednesday and Thursday was a very interesting one. A large number of delegates were in attendance. The opening services were held on Wednesday evening. This society met again on Thurs day morning in the Presbyterim church and spent a half hour in de votional services under the direction of Mrs. Wm. Neal. The correspond ing secretary gave a report of the work accomplished dining the year, and was followed by a report of the treas urer, Mrs. Stuart Mitchell. This showed the money nontribute.l by the dilTerent auxiliaries in the congrega tion amounted to $2253-61. It is with pleasure we note that of this $361.01 came from societies connect ed with the church in Bloomsburg. In addition to this a box of articles va lued at $70 was sent to a mission school supported by this society in New Mexico. On account of the un avoidable absence of Mrs. Mitchell, the treasurer's report was read by her daughter, Miss Rene. Mrs. Lundy. of Williamsport, a delegate to the Syn odical society, which met in Harris burg, gave an account of the proceed ings of that body, which was listened to with much interest. Attention was called to a beautiful collection of chrysanthemums which was sent with Christian greetings by Mrs. Boyd, of Harrisburg, and their appreciation expressed by a vote of thanks to the donor. After partaking of a lunch, which was furnished by the ladies of the Lutheran church, and an hour spent in free social intercourse, the ladies again came together for the transact ion of business. They listened to an interesting account of the work of Miss Catheart of Scotia Seminary for colored girls in South Carolina, given by her mother, Mrs. Hughes of India l.a. This was followed by some earn est words in regard to their work and responsibilities from Mrs. Grier, of Brooklyn, a member of the executive committee. Mrs. Carter, of Williamsport. led a THE REPUllI.iCWN PARADE THAT DID NOT TAKE l'l.ACE AFTER ELECTION V Married. , I 1 1 (tw pra'se service with special reference ta the ten years of the society's wor!:. This was interspersed with many touching and pleasant reminiscences of the meetings. After prayer by the Rev. Mr. Heilman of the Lutheran church, the business meeting adjourn ed to meet in Lock Haven next year. A popular meeting had been ar ranged for the evening. A large audience, among whom were many from the other congregations in Bloomsburg, gathered to hear the speakers announced. This meeting was presided over by the pastor of the church. Mrs. Devore. who had spent three years in Alaska under the auspices of the Board of Home Miss ion, held the congregation for a full hour in deepest attention as she de scribed in vivid and 'graphic terms the work there as coming under her own supervision, with its gratifying results. D. McMillan followed, and for another hour discussed in eloquent and fitting words of the work in Utah and New Mexico, a work in which he was engaged for several years. At the close of the meetinc all felt a nrw glow of enthusiasm with Home Mission and all parties resolved to be more active in its interests in the future. By Rev. W. G Ferguson at resi dence of Mr. Searles, Nov. 3, '92, Mr. Charles Drisscl to Miss Lizzie Kemp-ton. "Senator Sherman Eenews His Attack" Senatoi Sherman lenewed his at tack and refused to be convinced even by the oratory of the Iowa Senator. He wanted the Senate to do the straightforward thing, and not fizzle about it. "Give the Fair $ 5,000,000 and do not make believe that you are de ceiving youselves in giving it a 70 cent silver dollar, or two 35 cent half dollars." If the Children cry for it as the Senator hr.s said they did "Why not give them Castoria ? "said Sherman. He knew that it was a popular thing with the little ones, more popular he thought than even the souvenir half- dollar would be. The galleries looked down in surprise as these remarks came from Sherman, and Congressmen who entered the Chamber just as Mr. Slierman utteiea MU3I0 LESS0N3. Chas. P.
