Pet Superstitions. From Ilariier's Bazar. How many of us are there who do not once in a while feel just a little uncomfortable when we find that we have sat thirteen at the table, or have seen the moon over our left shoulders, or have done any of the thousand and one things that are supposed to por tend evil? Not that we think for a moment any misfortune really will happen in consequence of these acts, hut the suestions are not pleasant, and we wish our attention had not been called to them. Of course we all laugh at supersti tions, and think them silly, as they are, but, nevertheless, wc do not get away from the unpleasant feeling. I knew an old lady who considered it positively wicked ami unchristain to give up to "foolish superstitions," but she never would allow any one to rock an empty chair in her presence. You will see people in the street who have been hurrying as if anxious to lose no time, stop on a corner, and wait five minutes for a long tuncral procession lo pass. They have not the courage to cross through it when an opportun ity is offered, although they may waste moments that are golden to them. I he most sensible and practical people in the world will often take particular pains to skim off a patch of bubbles that has risen to the top of their tea, because some one in jest has said it is a "sure sign of money. it always requires a distinct ellort for me to pass a pin that I see lying on the sidewalk, because of that ab surdly bad rhyme, which, of course, I consider nonsense "See a pin and pick it up, All the day you'll have good luck." Sometimes these omens do not co well together, and even contradict each other. For instance, one will tell you that the only lucky way to find a pin is with the head toward you j and just as you have the habit of going around looking for pins with their heads toward you, a-.other man will say? "It is very unlucky to pick up a pin with the head toward you. The only right way is to have the point to ward you, for then the luck will be "sharp." If at the table a little salt is spilt between two people, the way to avoid a quarrel is for each to take a pinch and throw it over his left shoulder. Salt always has seemed a wonderfully powerful mineral from the time when we were small. Which of us, when a child, did not firmly believe in that old joke about putting salt on a bird's tail? I remember a curly-headed little boy in kilts who went out into the garden with a handful of salt, re solved upon catching a bird. He was very patient, and cautiously tiptoed around for a long while. Finally, a little discouraged, he went in to his mother, and said, mournfully, "Mam ma, they all flew away." His mother didn't laugh at him. When we stop to think, we wonder how real these silly superstitions, in which nobody believes, are in their influence upon our actions. We hesi tate to start on a journey on Friday; we walk out in the mud rather than go under 9 ladder ; we doit give knives or sharp instruments to our friends ; and we don't do a hundred things that we might, all because, though we are not superstitious, we would rather not do what suggests anything disagreeable. That Tired Feeling Is often the forerunner of serious ill ness, which may lie broken up if a good tonic .like Hood s Sarsapanlla is taken in season. This medicine in vigorates the kidneys and liver to re move the waste from the system, purifies the blood and builds up the strength. v Constipation is caused by loss, of the peristaltic action of the bowels. Hood's Pills . restore this action and invigorate the liver. A watchmaker in . Nuremberg, Bavaria, has invented a device which displays on a face of a clock, one hour before it is about to run down, the warning word, "Wind. ,r , Boils, carbuncles, and eruptions of all kinds are nature s efforts to throw off poison from the blood. This re sult may be accomplished much more effectually, as well as agreeably, through the proper excretory channels, by the use of Ayer s barsapanlla. The fruit of an ordinary banana tree averages from thirty five 10 forty pounds weight in season. The cocoa tree of the Maldive Islands every month produces a cluster of nuts. The nnnct'Dal wheat exnortinz coun tries of the world are in the order named: the United States, British India, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Australasia and the Argentine. Baldness ought not to come till the age of s K or later. If the hair be gins to fall earlier, use Halls Hair Kenewer and prevent baldness and grayness. In South Africa the seller of any horse or ox is bound by law to provide two sureties that it was not stolen. Children Cry foi Pitcher's Castorla. The Parisian Faviicm Journals "La Mode de Paris" and "Album ties Modes," so well known as the publications giving the choicest Paris styles one month in advance of all other journals, appear to be crowing just a little too popular. The demand lor them is growing so rapidly that the publishers, A. McDowell & Co., 4 West 14 Street, New York, have found it difficult to keep up with the increasing demand each month. They claim that the American ladies are buying their journals to such an ex tent that most of thj newsdealers are r.tirely out of them by the fifth of the month. As all the plates are made in Paris by the best artists, the publishers claim that it requires con siderable time to catch un with such an increased demand We agree with our lady friends that these are superior fashion journals. We suggest to them to become regular subscribers, thus making sure of receiving their journal each month, and securing th it valuable book, "Dressmaking Simplified," that is given as a premium to each subs criber paying ?3--5 m advance for cither "La Mode le Paris" or "Album des Modes" for one year. You may place the order through your news agent, or send direct to the publishers. That tii .t of scroftila in vour blood can be wholly eradicated by Ayer's aars iparuia. The widely expected papers by St. George Mivart, the lealing Christain evolutionist, upon the Darwinian theory, will be begun in the June number of the Cosmopolitan.
