Obeying Military Orders-
HE WAS A SOLDIER AND HAD TO DKS
TROY HIS OWN HoMK.
From Tld-ltlis.
The story as told in a French news
paper of 1'ierre Harl.it, a poor laborer,
who lived at Sevres, near Paris, with
his wile Jeanne, and their three child
ren. Industrious, frugal, knowing
nothing of the way to the wine shop,
1'ierre saved all his spare money, work
ing harder and harder, and at last
bought the tiny cottage in which they
lived. It was a tiny cotlagc, indeed
built of stones, with tiled roof, stand
ing amid shrubs and covered with
clematis. It always attracted the eye
of the traveler, on the left, as he cross
ed the Sevres bridge.
ricrre and Jeanne worked and
scraped and saved until the little cot
tage was paid tor, and made a feast
when it was all done to celebrate their
ownership. A landed proprietor, to be
sure, does not mind an occasional ex
penditure to entertain his friends.
All this ricrre and Jeanne had ac
complished just before the war of 1870
with Germany broke out. The cons
cription fell upon Pierre, who more
over, was an oltl soldier and belonged
to the reserves. A cunner he had
been, famous for his skill in hitting a
mark with a shell.
Sevres had fallen in the hands of
the Germans, but the French guns
were pounding away at them from the
fort on Mont Valerien. Pierre Har
lat was a gunner at that fort, and one
wintry day was standing by his gun,
when General Noel, the commander,
came up and leveled his field-glass at
the Sevres bridge.
"Gunner, he said, sharply, without
looking at Pierre.
"General, answered Pierre, res
pectfully saluting.
"Do you see the Sevres bridge over
there ?"
"I see it very well, sir.''
"And that little cottage there, at
the left, in a thicket of s!irubj?''
Pierre turned pale.
"I see it, sir,"
"Its a nest of Prussians, Try it
with a shell, my man."
Pierre turned paler still, and, in
spite of the cold wind, that made the
officers shiver in their great coats,
one might have seen big drops of
sweat standing out on his forehead ;
out nououy noticed tne gunners
emotion.
He sighted his piece carefully, de
liberately ; then fired.
The officers, with their glasses,
marked the effect of the shot after the
smoke had cleared.
"Well hit, my man !" exclaimed the
uenerai, looking at rierre with a
smile. "The cottage couldn't have
been very solid. It is completely
smashed.
He was surprised to see great tears
running down the gunner s cheeks.
"What's the matter, man?" the
General asked rather roughly.
"Pardon me, General," said Pierre,
recovering himself. "It was my house
everything I had in the world !

minister Abbey, it is said, has a
moveable floor, which catijbe raised or
lowered at pleasure to suit the height
of the preacher.
There is a story told that one day a
very short man was expected to preach,
and the pulpit floor was raised con
siderably. Being prevented by illness,
or some other cause, he was unable to
fill his appointment, and at the last
moment a substitute had to be pro
vided.
The clergyman who obligingly under
took the ollice proved to be a man of
stature considerably above the aver
age. On reaching the head of the
pulpit staircase he saw to his dismay
that the official in charge of the sim
ple machinery had apparently not
been informed of the change of preach
er. The clerical "son of Anak" was,
however, equal to the occasion ; he
scrambled in on his knees, and in that
uncomfortable posture preached the
seimon. It is believed that no one in
the vast congregation noticed the un
comfortable position of the preacher.

Why Our Prices for Clothing
Are the Lowest in this Country
WE ARE THE LARGEST buyers of cloth and clothing materials
in the world I also, sell more clothing than any other concern
in the world; having stores in all of the principal cities in the
United States. We buy and sell for ctish. We do not make our profits
all out of one store. A little from each satisfies ui. We manufacture
every garment we sell, you pay no middleman's profit here. We sell the best
luting ready-made clothing (for men nnd boys) you ever saw. Our stock
this season is larger and better than ever. You are invited to look at it.

Domestic Science Lends a Hand
There is another new and impor
tant factor in cooking. M.tny articles
need a crisp touch, or something to
make the other ingredients more har
monious, and it is not every cook
who can use butter of the best quality
for all cooking. It is right here that
the danger lies. The housekeeper
thinks she cannot afford the best grade
of an article, and yet fancies she must
have that article at all hazards.
Lard and pork have been standbys
so long, and there are so many places
where they seem to be necessary, that
their quality is important. Still under
the very best possible conditions the
grease is unhealthy, and its faults can
not be overlooked j in fact people who
are at all sensitive cannot eat food con
taining these ingredients.
Cottolene is a p.eparation whici
comes into the market to meet just
this need. The product is made of
cotton seed oil and beef suet, is the
same consistency as lard, and looks
like it except in color, which is creamy.
Cottolene is delicate m preparation,
is used in placj of lard or butter in
cooking. For frying it is unsurpassed,
as a rich bron color is easily secured.
lhereisnot the least s ingestion of
extra fat, but a crup fine fi'iish, very
pleasing in fi.sh, cakes, fried cereals,
oysters, or o'ams.
A peculiarity of this preparation is
that while food seems rich there is no
fatty taste to disturb the digestion,
and for this leason it has been very
popular wherever used, the popu
larity of Cottolene is due to the skil
ful handling and presentation of a new
element in kitchen economy, by a firm
of large icsourc ;s, which oilers only
the purest nd best for home consump
tion. This firm is determined to
maintain a high standard in the in
terest of the r customers, and the pure
food laws of which they are firm ad
herents. Mrs Marion A McBride
