The tax payers along tliese roads should see to it that their tax money do them good, and not have it diverted on the river road and the one paralled to it. It is unliltishing robbery. Might as well stick one's hand into another's pocket and run away with his purse. It is simply this We wonder that the ptople along these roads have not protested long ago against such rob bery and injustice. They are not created just to keep other roads in fine condition while their own are almost impassible. Just above Rears G.ip e miles north west ot Berwick there are two sand springs that throw up the finest silver sand ; and around them are evi dences of coal cropninir out of the ground and iron ore. J. W, Evans is doing a fine life and fire insurance business. J. and W. Company have put up a large foundry for small castings, that will operate almost on the principle of perpetual motion. Things are grow ing finely, E. J. Bowman delivered an a ldress before the High School on last Mon day on How to write and How to speak, that seemed to be highly ap preciated. The High school is making good preparation to have a successful time 2 nj of June. Piof. Richardson is very popular as a principal of our schools. The Literary Society of the High School was badly slurred by the Imle pendent of last week. It held its an niversary on the 25 ot April in V. M. C. A., before a large and delighted audience The exercises were attract live throughout. This society is only a year old, yet evinces a proficiency worthy of older societies. The supper afterwards at the St. Charles was ex cellent. Rev. Stephens and family have been spending a short vacation in New Jersey. Miss Gertrude Wilson has relumed to Berwick for a few weeks. Miss Elizabeth Eaust has been visiting friends in Wilkes-Barre. Mrs. J. A. Herr and son Ered of Mahoopany, have been visiting friends in town. Mrs. M. E. Rees, who has been quite ill for the past three weeks at her parents has returned to Scranton. Mrs. J. M. Peck, of Elkdale Susq. co. has returned home. The Nesco peck band of 28 men attended Odd Eellows day at Hazleton with credit. Berwick Lodge sent 48 men that showed up well. At the meeting of the 1st National Bank, M. W. Jackson was elected I'resident and S. C. Jayne Cashier ; B. E. Crispin Vice President and B. D. Freas teller. The P. O. S. of A. are organizing a drum corps of ten pieces. Dr. McCrea is preparing . to build a home on a lot adjoining the Opera House. Jno. Hunt has been seriously sick at his home on Mulberry st. The street committee of the Coun cil have ordered the names of streets to be placed at intersection of all the streets in town. Col. Seely is snatching up the loose dogs rapidly. Some of them will go where the wood bine twineth and where the whang mourneth for its first born. A conundrum Tea was served by the ladies of the I'resbyterian Church on last Saturday evening. This kind of tea beats young Hysson by 25 miles. Kemp has a big demand for his 12 $1.00 cabinets. E. R. Kitchen is installed as magi's trate in the Jackson Block with Mr. Shuman. . About two hundred tickets were sold at the Nescopeck depot on Odd Eellows' day. Henry Edwards, Summerhill, has one of the finest young steeds we can find outside of ths shafts. Thos. Lawer is running fine tonsor ial rooms, and has the finest set o f studed birds at his home on 2nd st. to be found in this section of the coun- trv- . . Phillip Sponey is getting along fine ly farming and huckstering ; made a good record in the army as a soldier. George Miller is still running the Mountain hotel. It is a fine resort for the Berwick young people in the Sum mertime. George knows how to cater to the public. His daughters have taught two of the best schools in Columbia Co Chas. Hagenbuch and Harry Beis line have gone to Spokane Ealls and take in Yosemite Valley and San Francisco j expect to return in Sep tember. I am an old man and have been a constant sufferer with catarrh for the last ten years. I am entirely cured by the use of Ely's Cream Balm. It is strange that so simple a remedy will cure such a stubborn disease. Henry Billings, U, S. Pension Att'y, Washing ton, D. C. I suffered for more than ten years with that dreadful disease, catarrh, and used every available medicine which was recommended to me. I cannot thank you enough for the relief which Ely's Cream Balm has afforded me. Emanuel Meyers, Winfitld, L. I., N. Y. Children Cryfoi Pitcher's Castorla. The Parisian Fashion Journals. "La Mode de Paris" and "Album des Modes," so well-known as the pub lications giving the choicest Paris styles one month in advance of all other journals, appear to be tri owing just a little h.o popuh-.r. Thi de mand for them is growing so rapidly that the publishers, A. McDowell & Co., 4 West 14th Street, New York, have found it difficult to keep up with the increasing demand each month. They claim that the American ladies are now buying their j iurnals to such an extent that most of the news dealers are entirely out of them by the fifth of the month. Ai all the plates arc made in Paris by the best artists, the publishers claim that it re quires considerable time to catch up with such an increased demand. We agree with our lady friends that these are superior fashion journals. We suggest to them to become regular subscribers, thus making sure of re ceiving their journal each month, and securing that valuable book, "Dressmaking Simplified," that is given as a premium to each subscriber paving $3,50 in advance for cither " La Mode de Paris" or "Album des Modes" for one year. You may place the ordwr through your news agent, or send direct to the publishers.
