POLITICAL POINTERS.
The signs of the times are that
Cleveland will be nominated for Presi
dent by the Democratic National
Convention. Sentiment in favor of
his selection predominates every
where. With Cleveland as the candi
date and tariff reform as the platform,
the Democratic party will be victor
ious. The statement has appeared several
times recently in the city dailies, that
lion. C K. Buckalew will be a
date for Congress this year.
candi-
Mr.
Buckalew has authorized a denial of
this. He is not a candidate for
Congress, and will not be this year.
Cleveland is his preference as a Presi
dential candidate.
There is going to be some fun be
fore the campaign is over in this
county. It is generally understood
that William Krickbaum will be a
candidate for nomination for a third
term in the Legislature. Peter A.
Evans, whose name has been used in
connection with that place, has de-
cicea mat ne win not run, ana so
George W. Sterner has fully deter
mined to enter the field and measure
lances with William, lie says he is in
to stay, and it will be a fight to a fin
ish. Krickbaum had a close shave
for a second term, and it is generally
believed that Sterner can beat him for
a third term. The trouble with
Krickbaum is that he never knows
when he has enough. He wants to
be drawing a salary from the public
perpetually. He wanted a third term
as Prothonotary, but the people said
-no. xnow ne wants a third term as
Representative. Sterner says he will
give the people a chance to say
whether they will endorse third termers.
The assertion made in the Senti
nel last week that everybody who op
nosed the selection of Krickbaum as a
lelegate to the National Democratic
Convention, were working to secure a
Vallace delegation to the State Con
ention, is utterly untrue, and is only
., a keeping with the constant political
clap trap with which that paper is
weekly nauseating its roadcrs. Ex
Senator Wallace is not a ca.ididate for
anything this year, so far as heard from,
md there was not a man among those
whose names have been mentioned as
anti Krickbaum candidates for dele
gates to the State Convention, who
could have been influenced by Mr.
Wallace or anybody else to ote or
work against the nomination of Gro
ver Cleveland. . Chairman Townsend,
Senator Herring, Robert Buckingham,
and all whose names were included in
that frothy article, are warm admirers
of the Ex-President, and desire to sec
rum nominate-!.
In connection with the allegation
that Chairman Townsend voted in
State Committee, "against the inter
ests of Cleveland and Pattison," how
does the following dispatch from
. Washington read? Mr. Townsend
' "vored for Kerr for State Chairman,
? -believing that he was a supporter of
I -Cleveland. He was not controlled by
the Harrity combine. Now read the
! following dispatch to the Harrisburg
i Patriot;
I" Washington, Feb. 1 2 The cat is
j out of the bag. Congressman Beltz
hover let it out to day in an interview
in which he stated that the state ad
ministration people would make an
.effort to send a solid Pattison delega
, iion to the national convention,
j'; This information will not be very
l! cheering to those friends of ex Pres
i! ident Cleveland who are in training
i' with the Harrity-Pattison combine.
K Before the Democratic state coin
i: mittee meeting was held the Pattison
I Harrity people sent the word broad
i cast that the Democrats of Pennsyl
vania were for Cleveland and that
' i; a delegation for him would be sent to
i;' the national convention
!; . It would seem from what Mr. Beltz
i. ; hover said to day that Cleveland was
:'; j to be dumped to make way for Gov
j; ernor Pattison, Mr. Beltzhoover is
j credited with being the mouth piece
of the Pattison-Harrity faction of the
; party and his utterance to-day that
j ; the unit rule would be adopted by the
L state convention, and that the dele-
U gation would be instructed for Pattison,

They gave it out that Kerr was against
Cleveland and that they were for him.
They accomplished their purpose, and
they are now getting ready to knife
Cleveland. I believe that Cleveland
has enough friends in the state to
knock out the plans of Lis pretended
friends."
People are laughing at the claim
made that the result of the recent com
mittee meeting was a people's victory
The people had as much to do with it
as the man in the moon. The com
mittee were elected at a time when
the question at issue was not thought

BLOOM POOH DISTRICT-
The election of Tuesday was truly a
peoples victory. There were 770
votes polled against 605 last year. The
chief contest was that of poor director,
On Saturday January 16 the members
of the standing Committee embraced
in the Bloom poor District met by ap
pointment, and according to custom
of the party placed in nomination, J
M. Larish and A. C. Hidley as candi
dates for Poor Directors. One of the
nominees called at the Sentinel office
and asked to have the names of the
nominees placed in the columns of
that paper, and when this request was
refused, they were offered pay for pub
lishing the names unMl election and
even then refused. A small notice of
the nomination was made, but the
names were not hoisted as the nomi
nees. un Monday evening, alter a
democratic caucus had made a nomi
nation for other township officers, some
ot the candidates named called at the
Sentinel office and ordered 2,000 tick
ets printed. The tickets were printed
and the names of Larish and Hidlev
for poor directors were omitted. When
the parties called for the tickets the
morning of election they refused to ac
cept them because the names of tiie
Candidates for poor director were
omitted. Other tickets were then
printed and the names of F. D. Dent
ler, J. M. Larish, and A. C. Hidley
were put on for poor directors ; thus
placing an independent candidate along
with the nominees. Afterward the
janitor of the Court House, took the

j dates for poor director, and scattered
them m the Commissioner s office, and
other places in the town.
The ticket no doubt was prepared
to deceive the public and accomplish
the defeat of the nominees for Poor
Directors. The persons nominated,
had served one terra or part of a term
and no complaint had been made as
to their fitness for the office. Wm
Krickbaum has held office by the votes
of the democrats of the county for
nearly ten years, besides being Com
missioner's Clerk for 1 2 years previous.
He should be the last one to oppose
those regularly nominated, and instead
of constant attacks upon and misrepre
sentation of other democratic office
holders selected by the same party
that has given him his offices, and ot
opposing regular nominees of the
party when they do not happen to be
his tools, he ought to be among the
very first to endeavor to bring about
harmony and to stand by the regular
nominees of the party.
