TERRIBLE SCEXE AT THE RU1X. Tha Hotel Royal on BlttH 'Avanna Da atroyad Over Ona Ilnndrad and Fifty Poraona in tha Ilonao Namlior of Vie lima Tot Vaknown Klght Raoora rod. Nrw York, Feb. 8. The flr (tory Hotel Royal, at tha (outheait corner of FortUth street and Sixth arenue. caught fire at 9 o'clock yesterday morning, and In less than two hours was a heap of ruins with a large num ber of Its Inmates cremated In tha death trap. 1 Tha building burned as If It had been so much straw. At 3.68 o'clock a pillar of flame shot up through tha elevator shaft of tha house. In less than twelra minutes the fire had spread out Into every corridor, and was stealing Its way under the doors along the passages. Five minutes the windows in the struoture were lighted up liko one of those toy houcos which children Illuminate with the stroke of a match. And the Hotel Royal Itself was a toy bouse. Five minutes more and It was covered with flame as with a garment According to the statement of the hotel officials, there were about 155 guests In the hotel at the time. The course of the fire is uncertain. The chef of the bouse said yester day that one of the cooks may have left the grease pot on the stove, and that it boiled over. The burning fat, in that event oould have set fire to the floor and wall, or blazed up to the celling. The fire jhay have started in this way. Engineer Harding is posi tive that bis furnace and boiler were In good order, and that no burning coals escaped. The boiler blew up an hour and a half after the fire broke out. There were 200 rooms In the house and all but four were oocupled. So rapidly did the flames spread that when the sleeping guests were awak ened many found all esoape cut off and some in desperation jumped from the windows to certain death on the pavement below, white others rushed madly Into the flames and either per ished or were horribly burned before assistance came. k large force of firemen were at work all the morning and streams wore kept playing on tha ruins throughout the day. i Richard Meares, proprietor of the hotel, ajid his : wife were both badly burned, and were taken with many others to Bellevue Hospital. At 10 o'olook this morning eight bodies bad been recovered. About sixty are still missing. Eighty-one persons were rescued alive or ac counted for. - .'-. ' : SIXTEEN BODIES TAKEN OUT. Still Finding Tlctlma of too Hotel Itoyal Fire. , Niw Tore, Feb. 0. When the fire men and laborers will finish their grewsome. task among , the charred timbers that mark where stood the Hotel Royal Is still a matter of , pure guessing. As the search among the ruins goes on more bodies, or parts of what was once living humanity are brought to light. ' - - Before daylight this morning four more bodies had been taken out. The list before day dawned had been swelled to sixteen, and yet what It Is supposed will prove the most fruitful spot for the searchers has not yet had a pick stuck into it. That part is where the elevator shaft was. A heap of bricks, twisted iron and half charred rubbish marks the spot, and beneath the little mound of ruins the firemen expect to find close to a dozen bodies. Of the sixteen bodies taken out only six have thus far been identified. TO REPEAL THE LAW. An Aaeemblymaa Who Has Soon Enough of Electrocution. Albany, Feb, 0.
