ing "both ends meet" why don't you
buy of E. Jacobs & Son ? Then, too,

SOME OF THE REFORMS HE HOPES TO
ACCOMPMRII IN MAIL SERVICE.
A dispatch from Washington says:
"Among the many things which Post
master General Wanatmiker hopes to
accomplish before the expiration of his
term are a foreign postal car l with
stamped coupon attached for prepaid
replys duplex house letter-boxes, in one
side of which the postman can deliver
his mail while the ho'iseholder can
put his letters in the other; an extend
ed and ultimately universal free deliv
ery; a reform in the present abuse of
the penalty frank, whereby more than
eight million dollars worth of the most
laborious mail carrying is done for
nothing; an alteration in the law which
now permits paper-covered '" serial
novels " to be sent at one-eighth the
legitimate rate; based upon these two
rcfoims, a reduction of letter postage
to one cent an ounce, and a resulting
change, in a few years, of the present
annual deficit of five million dollars
into a surplus of fourteen; the crea
tion of a postal banking system, the
deposits, estimated at five hundred
millions, to be re deposited in National
local banks, as preferred liabilities, and
to be employed in Government real
estate and similar solid investments;
and the postal telegraph system." We
rather guess Mr. Wanamakcr has bit
ten oil" more than he can chew during
his term of office.
The Duke of Clarence, eldest son

Brockway property was sold to Mrs.

"mamie" to write ok her
FATHER.
Pretty "Mamie" Dickens was al
ready consiilcrcii by tlioso wIhj knew
Charies Dickens best to be the novel
ist's favorite ilaurjliter. To none of
liis children, perhaps, was Dickens
more affectionately attached, and the
"pet daughter" saw much of her father
under all circumstances. When even
the dogs were chased out of the novel
ist's study, Mamie was allowed to
stay. The daughter is now a full
grown woman, living quietly just cut
side of London. For the first time
since her father's death, Miss Dickens
as been persuaded to write of hinv
whom she knew so well. Durinn i8os
there will be published in 'J'hi .adieu'
oiiie Journal, of Philadelphia, a
series of articles by Miss Dickens
under the attractive title of "Mv
Father as I Recall Him." Fortu
nately for the thousands who will read
what she writes m this series, Miss
Dickens lias a retentive memory, and
she made copious nolcs during her
father's lifetime. She will tell in this
series everything she remembers of
her father; how he educated his chil
dren; his family and his personal hab
its; how he wrote his famous books;
his love of flowers and animals ; how
Christmas was spent in the Dickens
household; how the novelcst romped
witn his children; the famous people
who came to the Dickens home, and
his last years and closing days. No
articles ever published hive in them
so much promise of telling the world
tilings which it has never known of
Dickens, and Miss Dickens' story of
her father's life will be eagerly looked
for in thousands of homes where the
name of Dickens is like a household
word.
