Ex-Prcsldent P.. B. Hayes Intro
duced the Itev. liennett, who oiTercd
prayer. Gov. Cunipbell then said that
the last act of his administration was
ono of the most pleasing ones, and
that was to hand to Major McKlnloy
his commission as governor of Ohio.
He did so, ho said, with the slncero
wish that his administration might bo
n successful one and relloct credit
both upon tho governor and tho
State.
At this Major McKtnley turned and
said Impressively:
"Gov. Campbell, I thank you. Let
mo sny I wish you and yours all tho
success, happluess and prosperity
that can possibly fall to tho lot of
mortals."
He then raised his right hand and

Washington, Jan. 13. Senator
Dolph, from tho Committee on Coast
Defenses and Fortifications, reported
favorably yesterday a bill providing
for fortiilcations and other coast de
fenses, ns recommondod by a Fortiil
cations Board appointed by tho presi
dent. The cities selected for special
defense are: New York, Son Fran
cisco, Boston, the Lako ports. Hamp
ton Bonds, New Orleans, Philadel
phia, Washington, Baltimore, Port
land, nearly all of tho Important
Southern seaboard cities, and those
on tho PacIIIo Coast.
An appropriation of $100,000,000 is
made, a reduction of 123,000,000 from
the appropriation contained In the bill
Introduced at the last session. Tho
bill as amended reduces the amount
to be expended the first year from
$20,000,000 to $10,000,000, and for each
year thereafter for a period of ten
years the sum of $9,000,000 is to be
available.

town was vlsitod by a terrlblo cyclono
early last evening. Threo pooplo wore
killed, a number of others injurod,
and tho little town was almost wiped
out of existence. A path 300 yards
wide was swept through the town and
for three miles east of It the devasta
tion continued. Tho dead so far as
reported nro William Travis, a farmer,
aged thirty; Bulllo Graham, aged ton
and a negro child not yet Identified.
The list of Injured will probably
reach twenty-live, sorao of whom will
