Gen. James C. Bomford, of Eliza
beth, N. J., died yesterday in his
eighty-first year. lie was a veteran of
the war with Mexico nnd of tho re
bellion. Ho also was in the Black
Hawk expedition in 1832 and in the
Florida war in 1837. He entered the
rebellion as major of the Sixth In
fantry in 1880, and was chief of staff
of Mnjor-Gen. McCook in the battle
of Terry ville, Ky.

The Tennessee Legislature has re
fused to make an appropriation for
the World's Fair.
The branch office of the Wells
Fargo Express Company at Houston,
Tex., was robbed of $10,000 Wednes
day night.
The thriving manufacturing town
of Lachute, P. Q., was nearly wiped
out by fire Thursday, 300 houses being
destroyed.
A dospatch from Ottumwa, la.,
says: County Treasurer Lane, treas
urer for the last eight years, is short
$30,000 In his accounts.
George H. C. Neal & Co., dry goods,
of Baltimore, the senior member of
which firm died a few days ago, made
an assignment yesterday, with liabili
ties of about $150,000.
The buildings and all the valuable
machinery of the "Wanser Sewing
Machine Company at Hamilton, Ont,
were destroyed by Are Wednesday
night Loss, $100,000.
A despatch from Hastings, Neb.,
says C. N. Paul, county treasurer,
gave up his office yesterday, and a
shortage in his accounts of $22,000 was

Census Superintendent Torter has
asked Congress to incorporate in the
Urgency Deficiency bill an appro

A tornado passed within five miles
of Eoanoko, Ala., Wednesday morn

In the United States Court, at Con
cord, N. II., yesterday, J. E. Henry, a
prominent lumberman of Zealund,

violating the Alien Labor Contract

eighteen years and six months in
State prison.
Billy McGlory, proprietor of the no

was yesterday sentenced by Recorder
Smyth to one year in the penitentiary
and lined $300.
Charles S. Quackenbush shot his
wife, probably fatally, and then shot
and killed himself in Newark, N. J.,
Friday evening. They had lived un
happily for years.

Friday evening. Ho was n nntlveof
Jlrooklyn, N. 1., nnd was seventy-
two years old. Ho was commissioned
captain in 180(1, nnd beenmo commo
dore In 1870 and rear admiral lu 1871.
In 1878-80 ho commanded tho naval
forces on tho Pacific. In 18S1 ho was
placed on tho retired list.

MURDERED BY BURGLARS.
Operator Sinalley, of Rethel, Conn.,
Killed and the Safe Robbed.
Bethel, Conn., Jan. 8. Tho night
telegraph operator at this station, on
the Dan bury and Norwalk Railroad,
was murdered to-night by masked
robbers and the safe robbed of about
$500.
The operator, whoso name was
Smalley, fought desperately, but was
overpowered and clubbed to death.
The men escaped. Word was tele
graphed to Bridgeport nnd South
Norwalk for tho police to bo on the
lookout for tho murderers.

He was born November 19, 1852, and
