District Attorney Nlcoll gave out
the following stntcment Inst night :
"In view of tho repeated charges
mndo In the nowspnpers I deemed it
my duty without waiting for a com
plaint to bo made by some of tho per
sons said to havo been defrauded.
" Mr. Field may bo insnno. If he is
It must bo proved as a defense to tho
Indictment in the usual way.
" No man charged with n crime can
avoid prosecution by being committed
in advance to a prlvnto insano asy
lum." Field was indicted by the Orand
Jury for the larceny of $50,000 worth
of bonds from the Union Faclllo Rail
road Company. He was arraigned
before Judge Cowing, pleaded not
guilty and was releasod on $25,000
bail. Ho was Immodiutoly rearrested
on a charge of the larceny of about
f 100,000 worth of sccurltloa from It. E.
Dietz, and was taken to Ludlow
Street Jail.
IRISHMEN ASKED TO USE FORCE.

to the Clan-na-Uael.
Philadelphia, Dec. lrt. A secret
circular has boon issued by whut is
called the Alexandor .Sullivan wing of
tho Clan-na-Uael to tho differont
camps In tho United States, culling
upon Irishmen, inasmuch as Parlia
mentary agitation has been unsuc
cessful, to return to physical force.
Tho circulur gives the largo amount
of money that baa been consumed in
peaceful agitation, and asks what has
been accomplished. It speaks about
the movements of tho men of '48 and
'08, and declures that they havo
frlghtoned England into granting
Ireland moro concessions than all tho
other movements hnvo accomplished
since.
It advlsos that in order to begin tho
work, fifteen per cent, of the funds of
each camp should bo sent to a special
committee at onco.
An oflleer of the Clun-na-Unel was
seen this afternoon In referenco to the
circulur. On being askod if the Fen
Ian movement was dead ho said:
"Our organization is tho strongest
Irish organization in existence to-duy.
We hnvo 20,000 men ready to strike a
blow for Ireland as soon us an oppor
tunity prosents itself.
Several members of tho Irish Fed
eration declared that they knew noth
ing about tho circular and that tho
men at the head of tho movement
were tho greatest enemies that Ire
lund hus.

patches from a number of tho larger
cities of tho country, from New York
to San Francisco, show that on account
of tho prevailing mild, damp weather,
tho grip Is again prevalent.
At some points it is quite severe,
while at others, while epidemic, it is
of mild form.
At Mihvuukco Lemuel Richards, a
long timo friend of Rev, Dr. 13oring
of Evanston, who killed himself a few
days ago, committed suicide while
suffering from the grip.
Washington, Dec. 15. The grip has
again made its appearance in Wash
ington, and a numborof persons have
been ufflicted.
Justices Lamar and Brown of tho
United States Supreme Court are con
fined to their rooms by tho disease.
They are not considered seriously ill.

was held In tho luausoloum at Frog
more yesterday morning in memory
of tho Royal Consort, Princo Albert,
to-day being tho thirtieth anniversary
of his death. Tne Bishop of Roches
ter, assisted by the Dean of Wind
sor, conducted the ceremonies. Thero
was a full choir, which sang portions
of Mendelssohn's "Elijah" und Sul
livan's "Prodigal Sou."
Tho queen was surrounded by tho
members of her family, including tho
Princo and Princess of Wales, tho
Duke of Edinburgh, tho Duke and
Duchess of Conuaught, tho Duchess
of Albany, tho Princess Beatrice and
Prince Henry of Battenborg nud tho
Prince and Princess Christian. Her
majesty In person placed a wreath on
the tomb and the ceremonies wero
moro than usually impressive
