The Crystal Salt Works, three miles
north of Warsaw, N. Y., were burned
Thursday morning. These works
were built In 1888, after the old blocks
burned, and were the model works of
the district, costing about $120,000;
Insurance $90,000.
W. F. Reed, a wealthy retired farm
er living near Freehold, N. J., was
enticed into a low den In West Asbury
Park, N. J., Wednesday night, and, it
Is alleged, was drugged and robbed.
He was then thrown out into the road
way where he was found unconscious.
The Madera, Col., Bank has sus
pended and caused the collapse of tho
John Brown Colony. The bank had a
capital of $100,000, of which $23,000
was paid up. It has now failed for
$85,000, which means the complete
ruin of tho co-operative projects.
Mrs. Amy Grimos, whose daughter
was murdered two years ago by Eu
gene Emery, a hired man, because tho
latter could not marry her, ran away
Wednesday night from Medina, N. Y.,
with another hired man, named
Charles Beck, leaving her husband
and two small children behind.
Elomon H. Williams, the Colebrook
forger and embezzler, confined In
Jail in Lancaster, N. H., for a year
past, was brought into court Thurs
day, pleaded guilty, and was sen
tenced to live yoars and six months
in State prison. The amount of his
liabilities is suld to bo about $100,000.

Tho coal famine caused by the
strikes in the coal Holds is assuming
a very serious aspect for steamers on
the big lakes. There is not a pound
of coal to be had at Michigan City or
South Chicago, and some steamers
have been delayed twenty-four hours
waiting for fuel.
Rev. H. W. George of Leeds, N. Y.,
was convicted Saturday of man
slaughter in the first degree for caus
ing the death by a criminal operation

Rear Admiral George H. Cooper, U.
S. N., died at his home, in Brooklyn,
N. Y., Tuesday, of heart failure He
had been 111 but a short time. The
dead officer was in his seventy-first
year. He had lived in Brooklyn since
1876.
Charles Bott Ackerman Is in jail in
Chicago, charged with embezzling
$700 from tho Central Map Company.
He is said to have taken $2,200 from a
life insurance company while acting
as their agont in Brooklyn a few
months ago.

Brakeman Burned to Death.

Hardy of this city was burned to death
and Engineer Thomas Whitesides of
Allegheny and Fireman John McFar
land of Cadiz, Ohio, were mortally
Injured In a rear-end collision between
two Pan Handle Railroad freight
trains near Bergettstown, twenty
miles west of this city, at about 4
o'clock yestorday afternoon.
Fourteen cars of porishable freight,
with the caboose and engine of the
second train, were burned. The loss
will reach $100,000.
