There's Music In the Air.
This genius is away
up in G, and is en

us seldom that musical
notes are seen floating
over housetops, as it is
that bank notes arc
found growing on
bushes. Our artist has
therefore photographed
them on the spot. The

A correspondent of the New York Sun
m visiting a family io a suburb of S.m

number man to say that he wits n.t w ri
t'ti.ly hurt, and would returtt to liwwoik
in a nwk,
"What you do, John?" the liuly of the
house UHked the messenger.
"Me no work. Me go China somo
week. Me (rit a wife."
" Well, you stay here and do work, eh ?"
"Oh, no," answered the Chinaman, hi.
fare expressing alarm ut the jroxition.
"Yes; you stay and do Ah Fun's work
while Ah Fun sick."
"Me no got China shoes," said the
man, apparently hitting upon the only
cxctiHe he nit i Id express in Kiiglish.
"Ah!" said the lady. "No got China
shoes? Wt.ll, you go hack to city; you
get China shoes, you cume hark, go work
for Ah Fun till Ah Fun come hack."
" Me go city get Chinashoe all light, "
said the man, and off ho went.
"Do you thing he will come back?" I
Asked.
"Oh, yes; he must come back. Ho
understood me. They always do what
they agree to. "
He did return, and went to work. He
cleaued the garden, got out the hose and
watered the flowers, and then came in
and began the rearntioti of dinner.
Hut he seemed to have something on hit
mind. At Inst he sMko.
"Seo here, lady, "said he, "me got hlttd
der (brother) come China last week. Me
put bluddcr in laundry. Hp want me come
s.i he go San FlancUco city ; uo can find
his way."
"Sorry," said the lady, "hut we give
dinner party to-nijit, and after dinner
wo have dance ai.d refreshments, and
you got stay ami wait on people."
The Chinaman was kept there for four
days. Once, as we all took our places
in a carriage at the door, lliu latieiit fel
low came out with his hat and coat on,
evidently prepared to go to the city with
out authority. I was callinl uMHito ex
ert n masculine authority, nnd ordered
hint to go back. With the utmost meek
ness, merely saying, "All light," he
shuttled into the house again.
It was and is my opinion that the poor
wretch went every night to see his brother,
tindcnmo liack every day ut duylight.
What Bleep he got, if any, I do not kuow,
but it must have been very little.

Life in I'aris means what it does in all
hrge cities the good and the bail writes
Kdward W. liok in a recent number of
lAtitiex' Home Journal The casual tourist
sees, as a rule, only one side. As a race,
the French are merry making people;
their very natures seek nnd crave enjoy
ment. Hut their amusements nru, there
fore, not necessarily of nu order below
tho ken of respectability. It has been
my pleasure to sisj something of French
domestic life, and to hear moro of it from
sources away from prejudice. Theatfec
tiou which exists between the French
father and his daughter is beautiful and
almost spirtual. Home aud family means
as much to him as it does to the resident
of any other city under the sun. The
French mother is not only a cook par ex
cellence, but a perfect type of housekeep
er. 13y nature she is quick, aud she ac
complishes much more with less exertion
than does her Euglish Bister. The educa
tion of her children is as a gospel to her.
Her religious faith is strong, and she in
stills it into her ch dreu at the domestic
board and at eventide. The parents live
out of doors, but it is rare, indeed, that
you see children on the streets of I'aris
after reasonable hours. They are taught
to find their chief amusements in ths
the home; and everything is done by th
French father ami mother to see that th
home is attractive to their children. On
of the moet beautiful sights in the worlit
is to see a well regulated French family,
where you will Dud the atmosphere redo
lent with domesticity.

A French geologist has made a careful
calculation of the amount of solid mat
ter yearly carried oil into the ocean by
the action of the rivers of the world aud
other causes. He estimates that the re
duction of the average height of tho sur
face of the solid lands is . UUO inches ouch
year. Making allowance for the corre
sponding rise in the bed of the ocean,
and taking no account of tho occurrence
of volcanic and other exceptional phe
nomena the general tendency of which
is to hasten the process of disintegration
tho period at which the solid land will
have ceased to exist and the surface of
the earth will bo covered with wutor has
been estimated. As, however, that pe
riod is 4,500,000 years distant, the pre
diction need cause uo immediate dis
quietude. Cincinnati Commercial-Gazette.

Ecrnsite. a new explosive, is the inven
tion of two Austrian engineers named
3icrsch aud Kuhin. Its power is stated
to lie in re ation to dynamite as lUUto 70,
nnd the new explosive is said to be capa
ble of Iwiug carried from place to place
with jierfect safety. It emits a thick,
black smoke, uud the detonating noise is
louder thau that of guupowdur, but
hhorter, sharper, and clearer. A bombshell
loaded with it explodes with such terrible
results that experiments against palisades
representing 100, 250, and 900 men, at
ranges of 800, 750, and 1,300 meters, aro
said to have recorded murk on every di
vision of the palisade standing for a
soldier. No details of the composition of
this new explosive are known, as the
secret of the invention U being closely
