J'ditor Wttkly Sun- io-3o-2t. A Pleased Audience- The popularity ol Chas. T. F.llis attracted one of the largest audiences of the season to Music Hall last night. The performance was satisfactory, and the audience was evidently well pleas ed, as it frequently applauded and in other ways expressed its pleasure and salislaction. Mr. F.llis is practi cally the whole show himself. He is charming in. his character, his quaint ways, his pathetic voice and clever turning of nice points having dimin ished none whatever in interest and impressiveness. JMi'y Item, Allen town, Sept. 30. Bloornsburg Opera House, Nov. 4. Old Nursery Favorites. There was Tom, the Son of a Piper, Jack Sprat, and Merry King Cole, And the Three Wise Men of Gotham, Who went to sea in a bowl ; The woman who rode on a broom stick, And swept the cobwebbed sky, And the boy who sat in a' corner, Eating his Christmas pie. These were some of the old favor ites, but they have been supplanted by t ie "Pansy" and "Chatterbox" stories, "Little Lord Fauntleroy" and "Five Little Peppers." The Old fashion pills and physics have been superseded, and wisely, too, by Pierce's Purgative Pellets, a mild, harmless and effective cathartic. They are pleasant to 'ake so gentle in their action that the most delicate child can take them, yet so effective that they will cure the most obstinate cases of constipation, stomach, liver and bowel troubles. They should be in every nursery. As a gentle laxative, only one a dose. SAFE-DEPOSIT BOXES. Tate at her home on Hepburn street, last Friday morning, cast a gloom of sadness throughout the length and breadth of the city wherein she had resided so many ears and was to well and favorably known. She was the widow of the late veteran editor, Levi L. Tate, and it is said that dur ing that gentleman s long and useful editorial career, 1 is wife proved a great assistance to him in getting out the woik that engrossed his attention. She was a lady endowed with a kind heart and a charitable disposition, a fact that many of the poor and needy of the cilv can vouch for. No one ever went to her for assistance that she didn't grant if it was in her power to do so. A gentle mother, a kind neighbor and an upright Christian woman, her tie nnse is greatly lamented. Her age was 73 years and 8 months. During ner illness, which continued over a period of two weeks, her sufferings were of the most intense nature, and death was looked forward to as a relief from the pain and distress she bore so patiently. May she rest in eace and filially awaken to glorious resurrection M tlliamfijHirt iStin. Mrs. Tate resided in Bloornsburg for many years, when her husband was the editor of the Democrat, and many friends still survive, who will hear of her death with sorrow. OLD TIME "SAND CLASS." 5" ml Tok th Place mt Slat In (ha "Sixty year ai?o I lauirht the sand elans in tli schools of tliU city in the Grand Jury room of tho old Court House, "said a gpiitlenian to Gossip last evening. "Tho Kind clang!" exclaimed Goiisip ; " What in tne name or bocruti was a mnd clans?" Aud then the ancient pedagogue pro ceeded to nay : " Six ty yoara ngo theseliools of the tow n occupied the old Court House, and I was one of the Bcholani. In tho Grand Jury room there was a long table about 18 inches high with a strip of iKNinl fastened on the top ull around tho sides, tliiu making the center lower than tho sides. This center was filled with line sand an inch deep. At the end of tho table wasa wheel on which the letters of the alphabet were priuted so that but one letter would ap pear nt a time; around the table the biiialle-it children of thoschool were gath ered, and each fuivished with astick. I, as the pedagogue ijipointed by the head readier, would tal o my stand at the end of tho table and alongside of the wheel, ond as I moved it would announce tho letter that whs brought to view, which the children would proceed to make in tho sand with their -slicks. When all hud made that letter I would level the sand with a comb and the wheel would be moved ou to another letter. And these little ones were called the ' sand class.' It was au interesting sight, the system was somewhut like tho kindergarten of tho present day, aud it was certaiuly an economical mode of supplying writing material, litis was tho sand class of CJ years ago. llarrisburg Telegraph. Identify lug Aneliat CHI In Kajrpt. Dr. Naville, tit. well known Egyptian explorer, the discoverer of Buliastis and tho treasure city of Pillion, has recently identified other cities in Egypt, more es pecially soino connected with tho exodus of the Israelites. At the close of June last he presented tho results of his dis coveries at a meeting of the Victoria In stitute, in London, presided over by 8ir Gabriel Stokes, ex president of the Royal Society. Dr. Navillo found that the Sue coth, spoken of in the liible, was not a city, as some have supposed, but a dis trict, aud from a valuable inscription found at Pithon that the latter became known to the Greeks as lleroopolis, and that although now many miles inland it was once a seaport, the water of the Iteil Sea extending up to its walls, and merchants' ships are described by Strabo and Pliny nssailiug thence to the Arabian Sea. Through some recently discovered papyri M. Naville found that Dual Zephon was neither a villago or a town, but a shrine of Haal and a noted place of pilgrintHge. The sites of other places dis covered wero those of Miguolo, which in after days was probably the Serapcum of tho Greeks, and also Pi Haliiroth. In the IJentilleatiou of the two last places M. Naville waa greatly helped by a papyrus. The bearing of his identifica tions is of no small interest to the stu dents of history, both sacred aud pro fane. Children Cry for Pitcher's Castorla.
