The funeral of Hon. Alonzo Taft, ex
Attorney General of the United States,
and ex-minister to Austria and Russia,
was largely attended at Cincinnati.
Tho Georgia Central Railroad has de
cided not to contest tho payment of the
license tax leviod upon railroads by the
State of Alabama, and .has notified tho
auditor that its branches in Alabama will
pay the tax.
Joeeph Newton, an alleged counter
feiter living in tho northern part of John
son county, 111., was captured near Lick
Creek, in Union county, 111., whereupon
helrew a revolver and killed himself.
The reports of French commanders
stopping the sale of bait to Americans in
Newfoundland are confirmed. Stecin
launches from tho French warships drove
the boats from the sides of the American
schooners. They also took up tho nets of
Newfoundland fishermen, putting them
ashore. The outrage is a great loss to the
inhabitant and to American fishermen.
Tho agreement among the furnace own
ers of the Mahoning and Shenango Val
leys, Ohio, made several montlis ago, not
to resume operations until a reduction in
railroad rates and the price of coke could
bo secured, has been abrogated, and a
general resumption is looked for in a few
days.
Edward Hageman, a constable, went to
the farm of Cyrus Aldrich, in Norton
county, Kan., to take possession of somo
mortgaged horses. Tho farmer refused
to give up the animals, and opened fire
upon tho constable. The constable shot
the farmer fatally. Hageman was shot
in several places, and died soon after.
The French chamber of deputies re
fused to put a duty of 85 francs on Amer
ican pork.

the Portuguese on the Bembn River, in
South Africa, has just been waged, ro-

The British flagship Wnrspite, now in

A new combustible, prepared from lig
nite, invented by Signor Napori, of Si
ena, Italy, has been successfully tried on

The Berlin municipal council, by a vote

The National Line steamship Europo

ther, 24 cockatoos, 1 hornbill bird from
Tersia, and 2 dogs. The animals are im
Irortod by the Manhattan Beach Com
pany, of Denver. The company has pur
chased 70 acres of ground near tho city
of Denver, and is going to establish a
good zoological garden. There is a lake
of considerable size on the property, and
this will bo stocked with sea lions, seal,
and all sorts of aquatic birds.
It is said Mrs. Jefferson Davis is con
sidering the question of making her
future home in Richmond, Va.
The Luray Caverns have been sold to
a New York syndicate for 25,000 cash.
It is reported in Berlin that Germany
and Austria have informed Switzerland,
Italy, Servia, and Roumania that they
must conclude tho treaties jointly with
Germany and Austria, or else renounce
the separate treaties which they have at
present with the two countries.
A sensation was caused in the third
art salon in Paris by the seizure of two
pictures, one representing Emperor Wil
liam over prostrate r ranee, and the other
a desert strewn with skulls, one of which
resembled the features of M. Jules Ferry.

John Morgan, a largo cattle raiser at
Axtell, Tex., got into a dispute about
cattle with Doo Barnes, another cattlo
raiser, and the two fought with fists,

they met and fought with knives, and
Barnes was fatally cut.
The board of naval officers appointed
to conduot the first civil service ex
amination in the navy yards, having in
charge tho reforms to bo instituted at

report to tho Navy Department, and its

United States Senator Wilkinson Call
