Radnor's Imported Hounds-
THK HUNTINO C I.t'lt's OKI: AT 1TRC1I ASK.
OF THK IUKK. OK RUTLAND'S DOGS,
A matter of considerable interest to
foxhuntcrs in the United States has
just occurred in the purchase by the
Radnor Hunt, of Hryn Mawr, of Rut
land's world wide celebrated kennels
at lielvoir, near Grantham, Lincoln
shire, England.
The Duke of Hcaufort, the sporting
authority in England, says that "there
are no such hounds to be found and
thui lone; pedigree and royal style
justifies their holding the first rank."
The Marduis of Worchcster, son ot the
Duke of Beaufort, purchased last year's
draft of the Belvoir hounds at the
agency price of 50 guineas per couple
or about $262. The second whipper
in of the Helvoir, son of the chiet
huntsman. Mr. Frank Gillard, Jim,
will accompany the hounds to this
country, and will inaugurate the care
ful maintenance and training of the
hounds for the Radnor on the elabor
ate plan pursued at the Rutland Hunt
where each hound receives the same
care that would be paid to a crack
race horse.
Several American hunts have been
on the qui vive to get a draft from the
Belvoir kennels, but the prize has been
at last obtained by the Radnor, who
have thus secured for Philadelphia
the credit of securing the first importa
tion of these splendid animals. They
also hold the refusal of next year's
draft. The Radnor hunts through
Montgomery, Chester and Delaware
counties and only the wild fox. Their
meets occur twice a week through the
season.
Miss. Lillie Doak has moved her
dress-making establishment from Stern
er's building on Main street to the
H. C. Hartman residence on Market
street. She is now in Philadelphia
getting the latest Spring styles. 2 t.
POULTRY NOTES-
No. 10.
Great care is necessary in regards to
watering chicks.
They should be given good fresh
water at least twice a day, and oftener
would be of benefit, especially in hot
weather.
Chicks drinking foul and impure
water from dirty vessels are as liable
to disease, as people are and as an un
healthy chick can not thrive, it is very
necessary to exercise care in that di
rection. The pots or vessels for water should
be cleaned very often.
It is now considered unhealthy to
feed corn meal to chicks, especially in
its raw state.
If fed at all it should be thoroughly
cooked, and fed as mush.
Stale bread soaked in milk is the
best food for the first week or two.
Give screening or cracked wheat as
soon as the chick will eat it, once or
twice a week.

The Way to Boom a Town.
The Philadelphia Inquirer refeer
ing editorially to the recent fever epi
demic at Bethlehem, says : "One of
the greatest difficulties in making the
suburban and inland towns healthy is
the over-caution of some well meaning
people, who fear that to call attention
local dancer to health
is to hurt the town. Instead of this
v.pinT en thf exact contrary is true.
That suburban town would have a
boom where the local authorities look
ed after every case of scarlet fever,
diphtheraand other contageous dis
eases and prevented other children in
the same house from attending the
schools, where the authorities were
alert to spy out danger to the public
health and prompt to enforce as rigid
remedies as might be necessary. Some
fthe Bethlehem people have been
fraid of hurting their town 1y making
known the danger in their water sup
ply. Bethlehem is really to be con
eratu'.ated on knowing its danger.
It now knows what to do. Sewers
. should come first, cesspools should be
abolished."

Where Thera are no B.id Indians.
The Sisseton Indian reservation at
the eastern boundary of South Dakota
and containing one million acres of
choice fanning lands, has just been
opened for settlement and offers to
the homesceker inducements that can
not be equalled. The soil is very fer
tile, the country well watered, there
are numerous small lakes within its
boundary, and it is within a short dis
tance of the twin cities of the North
west, St. Paul and Minneapolis, insur
ing good markets almost at the set
tlers' doors.
This is not a frontier reservation,
but is surrounded on all sides by an
old, well settled and prqsperous coun
try. The reservation will be held for ac
tual settlers, only homestead entries of
160 acres each being permitted, and
there is room for more than (iooo
farms. To get the best, however,
come early ; first come, first served.
The Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul
Railway is the only road which runs
directly through the reservation. To
reach it from the East buy tickets to
Summit, S. D., Waubay. S. 1)., Wilt
mot, S. D., or Wheaton, Minn. Sum

stations on the border. All ticker
agents in the United States or Canada
sell tickets via Chicago, Milwaukee &

Money Rules the Elections.
Poor men have no business to aspire
to a Congressional office these days,
especially in Luzerne county. In a
contested election of John B. Rey
nolds vs. Geo. W. Shonk, in that dis
trict, a number of prominent gentle
men testified as to campaign expenses
most of whom had run for tVis office
themselves, and each stated that from
$9,000 to $10,000 was not too much
to be expended during a canvass.
Judge Stanley Woodward testified,
"that in a close and hot campaign in
Luzerne county $9,500, the amount
Mr. Shonk testfied he spent, could
be easily used for legitimate purposes
without any corruption of voters."
What a commentary this on free in-
j stitutions wnen uic , jw, iwj, cyhi
the man of moderate means, is obliged
to impoverish himself to pay for legiti
mate expenses m a content for oltire.
Expend as much money as the whole
salary paid him while an incumbent of
the office. What with hundreds of
thousands of dollars paid to companies
the election of a United States Senator
and $10,000 to secure a seat in Con
gress we are fast drifting into an oli
garchy of wealthy and unscrupulous
rulers ; men who measure success by
the amount of money expended. It
shows how fast we are drifting away
from the spirit of our institutions,
which theoretically open the door to
ru n and poor alike. r.x.
