Lovely Woman's Wf
The ways of lovely woman wbon sho
calls to her aid the telegraph service,
together with a glimpse into a disordered
household, were both shown at the 23 1
street telegraph station, near 5th avenue,
New York, on a recent afternoon.
It was close upon 4 o'clock wlion a
young wouiau, tall, well dressed, and
considerably ogitatod, appeared there
and, seizing a blank, wrote rapidly for
a moment before she stepped over to the
man in chargo.
"Won't you hurrr that along as fust
as possible, pleaso?" she said, pushing
tho dispatch through.
It was addressed to an office in Nassuu
street, near WalL The operator, used
to this reaueat. took the message and
bvgau the usual annotation.
"Twenty-sit oeiiis, " be said, still jal
bing at it with bis pencil.
"How soou will it go?" asked the
sondsr.
"At onoe, "
"It ought to get thorn before half rwst

"It ought to," said the operator.
"But will it, do you suppose?" per

"Yes, if thvra Is uo delay at the ot'ior

Thuu she paused ill tho act of putting
dowu the money.
"I wonder if a niessengor would be
quicker," she said, half to herself.
The operator waited.
"I'll lie back in a minute," she went
ou, sud hurried to th messenger desk.
"What is your shortest time to Nassau
street, near Wall? " she burst out breath
1 Mtdy.
"We bars done Jt in 93 minutes.
I'ifty-iiixl called the manager, iu autiui

"Oil, I dou'l believe he oould get there
so soou as that, objected the young
woman, as a boy presented himself.
"He oould in SO minutes, " the man

"How would lie go?" persisted the
questioner doubtfully.
"Hy cross town car, elevated train,
and run up Wall street to JNass ui.
btill she hesitated. A gluuo at the
clock decided her.
"It is on the stroke of 4. and the mes
sage must be delivered before half past.
I think the telegraph is quicker, " she
said.
Iu frantic baste she returned to the
operator. He was busy with a message,
and two more precious minutes were
lost
"Send that dispatch just ns fust as
you can; ami do put on it 'to be deliv

her turn c line.
"I'll rush it, " said the operator.
"Oh, do," urged the lady. "You see
how important it is," oud for the first
time she uukiiit her pretty brows.
The operator, too, indulged in a fleet
ing smile. Tho dispatch read:
"Don't bring Mr. home to dinner.
Cook bus just left iu a tantrum. "

"And never finish tho trial?"
"Never. A verdict would put nu end
to my idea of happiness, which con

sir, a verdict would bo the other place. "
