KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge, why, what is itt Sup
pose we inquire. Ask your friend;
feruso your books; go to your own
rain library, and search it well, For
in all these yo think yo havo an inex
anstablo supply of tbis essental article.
Have you dono all this. Do vou now
know; or is it mill a mystervt If you
do not know, listen I will tell you.
Knowledge is that which is known.
Our knowledgo is that whioh we know
Your knowledge is that which you
know. My knowledge is that which I
know. And all knowledge is that which
ever has been, or is, at the present time
known. Knowledge lost is when some
.ono knowing something that no other
person ever knew, dies, and does not
leave this something recorded or in any
form tbat man may obtain it All else
is mystery, and mystery is not know
led ire.
Knowledge is that whioh wo seek
after, and mystery is that whioh we
try to avoid and overcome. But does
knowledge lesson or inoreaso mystery!
Let us think for a moment, journey
back to your own mind. Can you not
think of some curious thing whioh yon
aw for the hrst time, and do you
remember bow many wanderments
there arose about that curious some
thing that you would like to havo
known about! Perhaps you are old
enough to remember the time when
telephones were not, Uo you remem
ber the first timo you ever heard tho
name! Do you remember the name!
Do you still remember what things you
immediately wished to know about it!
Now you know it is possible. You
know you can talk with your friend
And at a oertatn distance you can re-
cognizo tbat mend s voloe. You oan
hear him talk, whistle, sing, oough,
laugh, or even play on an instrument
But do you know why or how! Has
it lessend or increased mystery! Could
you tell what makes the voice appear
o email when coming through the
telephone wire! When the man bung
bis muddy boots on Morse's telegraph
wire and told his friends and neighbors
that they became muddy from travel
ing so fast Do you believe that man's
mystery was lessened by knowing that
messages could be sent Has this
been the state of any other person!
Is there another person like the little
bov who Doled beans one vear and
bops the next! Some of the bean vines
bad grown long, and when the poles
were set the little fellow coodnatured-
ly, helped those overgrown vines up
the poles. Time went on and the vines
wero content to crow in tho wav.
But the next spring, this same little
fellow poled the hops. They, too, had
become overgrown and must need
Bome help to go up the poles. The
little boy wondered how he should
wind the vines. He wont and cot
bean pole with an old vino ou it; stuok
it in the ground and from this as
patorn, he wound the hop vinos the
amo way tho beans had wound them'
selves tho former year. Ho tied tho
vines loosly with cloth and went away,
Tho next morning ho again went to
the hop vines to see how rauoh they
bad grown and how they wore getting
along. Tell me what you suppose ho
found. Why to his astonishment thoso
contrary bop vines bad unwound them
eelvoa and gone up the polos the other
way Singular, is it not! What made
them do so! Why, bless you that
little fellow has always been wonder
ing about it. Ho don't know to this
day. Did it lesson or inoreaso his
mystery! Again, young people must
grow to tho knowledgo that all
mankind is like tho hop vine. Let
them go in tho way they wish to and
they are all right But twine them up
tho other way and they aro worse than
a mule. From these and many more
which you havo had in mind while
reading this, you may cause your own
minds to deoido whother or not know
ledge lessens or increases mystery.
And further if it is not true that tho
more wo know, tho less we know. Or
in other words, the moro knowledgo
wo have of a thing; the more mystery
wo find about the same. The most
learned persons are thoso who are the
humblest at natures throne.
