Mr. Buckalov raaJo a spoooh In tho
IIouso on tho 13th In opposition to tho
proposed otiango In tho rulos of tho
House. It was an ablo argument, and
wo rogret that it cannot bo printocl In
full.
Tho attorapted effort In eortaln quar
ters to raako it appoir that thero will
bo numerous candidates for tho ollljo
of Register and Recorder thla year
Booms to havo fallou tltt. Mr. Camp
boll is an honost, sober, industrious and
intelligent ofllcial, and has won tho
confidence and rospcot of all whoso
good wishes aro worth having. His
administration of tho oflioe has been
clean, nud ho is ai ruucb entitled to a
re-election for a soojnd term ai nny
man who over held tho position. None
of tho persons monlioncd ns posVtblu
candidates havo any idea of aking for
tho nomination, so far ai can be learn
od, and the suggestion of thoir names
is a case of tho wish being fili'rt)
tbo thought. Mr. Campbell cannot bo
defeated for a second term, and it is
not at all probablo that any ono will
be rash enough to attempt such a thlDg.
Motivoa and Deeds.
The Troy 1'ress very trnly remarks
that "when a nobl6 not is perfoimcd
bunting for a'selfisli moth e is an un
worthy pursuit."
It might with equal truth havo added
that this is a pursuit most oommonly
followed by persons who aro not them
selves noted for generous and unselfish
acts. Every broad performance of The
Wohlu is sneered at as an advertising
sobemo by tho small-souled press. A
miser naturally bates liberality in others
it is a perpetual rebuke, to his
meanness. A man who selfishly lives
for bimselfalono is quick to sneer at
a pnblio-sptrited action in another. It
affords a contrast which carries a re
proach to him.
Many men having tho wish to do a
noble publto action aro restrained by a
dread of tho interpretation whioh small
and mean natures will put upon it.
"He knows how to advertise, himself,"
is the sneer that he will, invito. This
is a kind of advertising which should
be encouraged. A good eximplo
should not bo hiddeu, in any matter
tbat concerns tho wtlfaro of mankind
or of a community. Peter Cooper was
well advertised by tbat noble benefac
tion, the Icslituto which bears his
honored name. George Peabody wan
advertised on two continents by bis
splendid gifts to the city of London.
Girard, Smitbson, Cornell, Lick, Childs
and a scoro of other Americans who
havo ueoil their wealth for the lasting
benefit of their fellow-men bavo their
fame ba;ed upon their benefactions.
Andrew Carnegie is just now receiving
considerable "advertising" lor endow
ing rioh libraries in Pennsylvania.
It is the oredit of human nature that
good examples carry the power of in
feotion. One good deed, ono action
for the publio benefit, incites others.
There are charities which should bo
kept private, and thero aro others
whioh should be made publio. Tbo
men and women'whoso publio benefao
ctions aro most noted undoubtedly do
far more good in secret than will ever
bo credited by the rocordmg angel to
those who are swift to impute bad mo
tives to any good action in others.

20 Per Cent.
Exta Inducement Sale.
Our season for selling winter
snorts is getting short. We
mist .r.arry over stock or "extra
indi:t.,:" buyers. We therefore
decidjby a timely sacrifice to
convert goods into cash, by
j;vini this unusual discount :
Twnly per cent, ojf from
regular marked prices, which
gives the buyer goods at net
cost.
During thirty-three years of
uusiness it is our proud record
to have won a reputation for
avoiding all misrepresentations
and keeping all our promises,
and this is not one low bait
price to catch average profits,
but is a well-defined, broad
gauge policy to "extra induce"
buyers, and turn a long winter's
stock in a short season.
This 20 per cent, discount
includes our entire stock of
Ready-made Clothing with
Blue and Black 'goods, at ten
per cent.
