evening, at ttij residence of his father
in WftsmniHon. Tho only mora-
bent of his family with htm when he

garet and Hattlo Blaine. Tho illness
was ftlsudden one and not until that
morning was it realized that ho waa in
danger. Thursday of tho proviotis week
ho was wesent at tho lanoh Mra. Wash
ington McLean gave in compliment tn
Mrs. Grant. This waa hla last appoar
anoo in public. Thursday evening ho
besan to feel bsdlv and had tho usual
vmntoms of la crinno. Friday morn
ing he went to tho Slato Department,
but remained oulv a short time, as hu
felt quite indisposed. Ho wont homo
nod shortly afterwards had a chill,
followed bv a hi ch fever.
Dr. Q. Llovd Maaruder was called
In and at once pronounced Mf. Blain a
very sick man. By Saturday morning
both lunis woro affosled and Incipient
pneumonia inado its nppearanco. Mon
day morning a marked improvement
had taken nlaco in tho left lunc, but
pneumonic co' gestion had fastened on
the ricrht luncr and bv Tuesday was
fully devoloped. Tuesday evening his
physicians were very auxious, nna Iho
family beean to fear tho worst. Sec
ntary Blaine told a few family friends
and also informed the President of tho
serious oharacter of hu son's lHnes?,
and about 8 o'olook the President
went over to the Blalno Mnnsion and
was shown upstairs bv Mr. Emmons
Blaine. This must havo been shortly
before the end. Mrs. Harmon arrived
a few mhmles later.
Walker Blanie, the eldest son of
James Q, Blaino, was born at Augus
ta In 1855. Ho obtained his prelimi-
i .! ... a .. .1 a :
nary eaucauon at Anuovcr tjuimuaiy,
was graduated at Yale and took the
oourso at, Harvard Law School. To
obtain a practical knowledge of law he
spent two years in tho office of Sena
tor Davis, of St. Paul, Minn.
He entered tho publid sorvioo in
1881, whon his father, then Secretary
of State under President Garfield, ap
pointed him Third Assistant Secrolary
of State. In the Winter of 1881-82
he was sent as a bpecial Commissioner
of the United States to Chili and
Porui He was recalled by Secretary
Frolinghuyson, the nows of his recall
reached him, not through the State
Department, but through the medium
of the Foreign Ollico in Peru. Upon
his return President Arthur appoiuied
him one of tho Government counsel
before the Court of Commissioners of
Alabama Claims. In that capacity he
served until the life of the court" ex
pired. He began the practice of law
in Chicago in 1884, but during the
last National campaign he closed his
office, returned home and accompanied
his father in stumping trips through
Maine and the West, After the Re
publican party succeeded to power be
was appointed Examiner of Claims in
the State Department.
"Walker Blaine," said a gentleman
who waB one of bis classmates at col
lege, "was very popular in college
much more so than his toother Em
mons. Emmons was more reserved
,and given to 'preaching'. He seemed
to realize the fact that his father was
a great man. With Walker it was
different. He was always cordial and
frank, and seemed to bo altogether
free from affectation. It is a singular
fact that Mr, Blaine, senior, for a long
time1 regarded Emmons as his most
promising son. Emmons ho thought,
had inherited the most of his ability.
He changed his opinion, however,
later on.
Stephen B. Elkins, who received a
telegram early in the afternoon saying
that Walker Blaine was dying, and
that his loss would be keenly felt in
the State Department, noonly by the
Secretary, but by others as well. Mr.
Elkins thoucht that Walker had de
veloped very rapidly in tho last few
years, and tad ho lived he would have
certainly made a good name for him
eelf. His executive ability, rare tact
and discretion especially fitted him for
a diplomatio position. Tho porsonal
loss to Mr. Blaine senior would be
hard to calculate. He had grown to
depend upon him in many ways, and
In fact Walker had praottcally relieved
his father of all the routine work of
the State Department.
Walker Blaino was the almost con
stant companion of bis father of lato
years. He accompanied hiin almost
everywhere and looked after him with
the care and attention of a mother for
. a slok child.
"I knew Walker Blaine verywcll,"
aid ez-Seoretary Charles E. Coon,
"and I think bis ability was of the
Lightest order. He was personally
very popular everywhere he went and
. he possessed tho tact and discretion of
a trained diplomatist."

Pennsylvania Limited
Recognizing tho increasing popular
ity of the Limited among the businetg
and professional men of the country,
the Pennsylvania Railroad Company
has decided to dill further improve tho
facilities of this wonderful train, and
add to its conveniences by introducing
a stenographer and typewriter for the
service of tho passengers.
A bright, young man, expert in both
branches of his profession, will be
placed on each train between New
York and Pittsburg to take the dicta
tion and transcribe on tho typewriter
tho correspondence, of the passengers
who desire to avail themselves of his
serviots. By this means, a business or
professional man can attend to his
correspondence en route, and the letters
will bo mailed from tho train as they
are written. This novel and convenient
arrangement will go into effect on
Feburory 1st.
Tho business men already have the
advantage of tho stock and weather
reports on the Limited, tho ladies have
their maid, their privato bath, anil thoir
drawing-room in the observation car,
and the introduction of an amanuensis
will round ont tho completeness of the
train's conveniences to a perfect degree.
No other railroad train in tho World
offers any ono ot tho four advantages
that are provided on the Pennsylvania
.Limited.
