And now it is intimated that Quay
has his oyoon Beaver's place iu order
to make snro of carrying Pennsylvania
next yoar as preparatory to his (Quay's)
advancement to tho Presidential throne
in 1802.
The Democratic Stato Convention met
at llarrisburg on Monday, and nomi
nated K. A. Blglcr for State Treasurer.
The mooting was characterized by har
monious action, and entertainod with
good spoeches.
Bear iu mind tho faot that you must
be registered and that Thursday of
next week is tho last day on which
this can bo done in order to voto at
the Novorabor election. Democrats,
attend to this matter and don't neglect
to do your duty.
It is the mission of tbo press to chron
iclo piocodurcs. You might as well
censuro a mirror, which faithfully re
produces your figuro In its face, as" tho
press, which is tho mirror of each day's
happenings. Don't get mad at tho
papers for publishing tho nows. Ex.
An important law passed by tho last
legislature places it in tho power of
tho court to permit administrators or
executors to dispose of tho real estate
of decedents for tho payment of debts,
at private salo, instead of compelling
them to oxpose it at publio sale as
heretofore
The two great pohtioal parties of
tho country are pretty equally divided,
In the 33 States the Democrats have
19 Governors and tho Republicans
navo iu, ana I'rosiaent Uloveland had
97,000 more votes than Gen. Ben liar
rison. What have tho republicans to
brag about! It was only our peouliar
electoral system tnat gavo that party
mo x resiaeni.
Tho County Commissioners of the
stato meet in their third annual con
vention at Allentown on tho 23 rd of
September. The object of the conven
tion is to ascertain thn nnarntinn nnd
construction of tho goner.ll laws relat
ing to counties ; to advocate legislation
mpro uniform ; to prevent waste and
mismanagement in ihe administration
of publio funds and generally to dis
cuss tho duties and obligations of pub
lic municipal officers. Tho purposes
are important and no doubt the con-
vuuuuu win oe wen aiienaca.
According to the Scranton Jtepub-
uean trie superintendent of i'ubho In
struction, Rev. Dr. Higbee, expressed
mmseu very strongly in tavor of a
general inoroaso in the pay of publio
school teachers throughout tho State,
He believes that only by raising the
stanaara oi compensation will a high
er standard of efhoienoy be attained.
There is one point coicerniug this sub
ject on which Dr. Higbee might have
expressed himsoli with even greater
against female tcaobers. A woman
woo priorms tno same wort in a
school that a man does is in all con
science entitled to equal pay.
