COLUMBIAN AND DEMOCRAT. BLOOMSBURG, COLUMBIA COUNTY, PA. T The Columbian. o.a.Biwn, iru... J.K.BHtnlnlr., i" Etor. BLOOMSBUKG, PA, FRIDAY, APRIL 12, 1889. A monument will be erected to Qeu. Geo. B. MoClellan la Philadelphia, at a cost of $25,000. President Lincoln was OBja-sinatnl in 1805, and twenty years Inter his son is sent as Minister to the Court of Saint .Turnes, England. Tho Garfield boys phould mako a note of thin. Edwin Booth had n slight stroko of paralysis whllo playing "Othello" at Itoohcster last week. Tho play could not go on, and Lawrooco Barret was greatly excited and announced to the audience that tho great tragedian had probably appeared for tho last time. The attack proved to bo not so serious as ho thought. Booth is in New York now, and will resnmo his noting in a short time. It would be just as appropriate and Bonslble to ndop nn amendment to a State Constitution defining tho sizo of a half bushel measure or forbidding the manufacture of oloomarg.trino as it is to adopt a section prohibiting tho manufacture or sale of liquor. We have respect enough for the good sense of the people of Massachusetts to ex pect that tbo pending prohibitory amendment in that stato will be re iect d by 50,000 majority. Ltavo lawmaking to tho Legislatures.- IForW. Among tbo bills passed finally in tho Senate arc: Authorizing exeoutors or trustees to y unuo wim outers in mo organization IP of corporations for profit; making ap propriations to tho legal, representatives of the late Judges Trupkoy and Will iams for unpaid salaries of the last year of their lives, amounting to nearly $10,000; to provide for traveling ex penses of poor directors and County commissioners; authorizing boroughs to levy a tax on conveyances carryimr persons for pay, except thoe engaged in tho livery business; regulating lay. ing Out of town lot; fixing a tou of snthracito coal at 2,210 pounds; forbid mg traffio in registered bottles by per sons other than tho owners; to punish persons for defacing statues or monu ments; authorizing president Judgo of Lackawanna county, to appoint poor directors; house bill repealing limit of damages to be paid for purchaso of bridges by any county. It is asserted that President Harrison has plainly given colored ofllce-seekers from tho South, wh' are here, to un derstand that they havo very little to expect from him. He proposes to re organize tbo protectionists of tbe Souih and to try in this way to make the.di viding lines of tho parties not upon oo'or, bat upon tho economic polioy. He claims that the South is full of pro teotionists who have been always work ing with the Democrats becanso of the race situation in that section. It is said that many of these have signifind their desire to join bands with the Re publican protectionists, making that tbe issue if they oan como into the party with the proper recognition. The men who, belong to this class, Mr. Harrison says, arc wealthy and inteli gent the active progressive men of th South. It is asserted that Mr. Hirrison proposes tc ease tho way for them into the Republican party by eradicating the race question as an iesne and reoognizing eminent pro tectionists, former Democrats as well as Republicans. WASHIHGT0H LETTER. From our Rejnlar Correspondent. J Washinuton, April 8, 1889 Poor President Harrison. Tho New York gant? have made his lifo a tor ment for ibo last weok. The ne groes aro not taking tills neglcot easily by nny moano. They arc klckinc and swearing vengeance on tho Republi can party. It docs seem a little queer that out of nearly 400 Presidential ap pointments thus far made, not ono is a negro.
