Correspondents and all persons who
have occasion to write for newspapers
should avoid abbreviations. I)i not write
Tucs. for Tuesday, ch. for church, pres.

the words, the, and, Is, and other connect
ing words, Is also annoying to the editor.
When a communication is received that
abounds with abbreviations and omls.

the same, spell out the abbreviations and
add the omissions. Tho compositors In

U. Llnd, of Clearfield county arc about to
erect a largo tannery at tho mouth of
Blackberry Run at Jameson City. This
company proposes to erect thrre buildings;
one 700 feet In length, with a wing extend
ing 400 feet, another 00 by 120 feet, for tho
purposp of storing bides and leather; also
leech house 40 by 00 feet. There will be
in the buildings 8 boilers and 8 engines.
When completed and slocked with leather
and hides tbo building will cost $300,000
and tho tannery will bavo a capacity of
15,000 cords of bark per year. For tbo on.
tire work they will occupy 80 acres of
ground.
The hauling and peeling bark, lu con
nection with the tannery, will take about
500 laborers. As It is not the intention of
the company to erect any dwelling houses,
and the accomodation of these laborers and
their families will require a large number
of tenant houses, the building ot tbcsu
houses will be a good speculation for capi
talists. A party of sixteen gentlemen sat down
to an excellent supper nt the Exchange
Hotel kit Friday night. The menu cm-
braced terrapin, lettuce, oysters, potatoes,
salads, fresh shad, cracker?, cheese, fruit,
ice cream, cake, coflec, and cigars. There
were present tho Mayor of tho city, the
President of a bank, the President of a
warming corporation, the secretary of a
railroad company, the greatest Inventor ot
the ago, two editors, two rallroid contract
ors, a sun printer, a magistrate, a prose
cuting ofQccr, treasurer of a railroad com
pany, a bank cashier, an Insurer of lives,
and last but not least the proprietor of the
house, who is president of several corpora.
Hons and a director of a railroad company.
Nobody seemed to know whose party it
was, nor what the occasion for It was, but
tt was a delicious supper and everybody
enjoyed It. Mr. Tubbs was specially com-
pllmented on the snapper soup. Every
man had a written speech In his pocket
which ho was anxious to read, but failed
to do so on account of tho uproar occasion
ed by all trying to talk at one time. In
this respect it was a vei liable "Clover
Club." One man more courageous than
the rest, on falling to read his speech pre
sented lt to the host. It wnB in "blank"
verses, on a roll of paper six yards long.
Another momber borrowed tho roll und
ead therefrom with great effect a few
verse of Italian poetry. There was mu.
sic by the orchestra, singing by tho glto
club, and at 11.30 tbe party adjourned alt
er electing Mr. Tubbs President, and
agreeing to meet again upon bis call.
