It is said that a wonderful freak of na
ture has recently como to light near Tucka
hoe, Northumberland county. A descript
ion of tho child, for such it Is, says the Dan
ville Intelligencer, Is given ns follows : It
has heavy overlapping ridges of llcsh about
tho eyes; a broad list nose; damp clammy
lips, from which protrude long curved
tusks; enormous flabby cars; bunches at
the top of the forehead from which, on
each side, sprout horns. Instead of hands
it lias tho most terrible clawa, split hoofs,
and a tail two feet In length, making ono of
the most remarkable freaks of nature ever
seen.

Tuesday evening "The Pride of tho Mar
ket," a comic drama, was presented, and
was marked with tho same faithful work
by the entire company as tho Monday even,
ing's performance. Wednesday evening

"Madcap" with Mls9 Hlnton In tho title
role. The company will continue at the
Opera House throughout tho week and will
present successively on Thursday, Friday
and Saturday evenings "Littlo Barefoot,"
"Little Sunshine," aud "Tho Lost Will."
When tho Benton fair was drawing to a close
Friday afternoon a man In a buggy drew
up nrar tho fenco on the north side of tho
grounds and soon collected a crowd around
him. Ho then proceeded to cheat as many
people in the crowd ns ho could out of their
money. Beginning by selling cuff buttons
at twenty-five cents each, and giving tho
buyers their money back, ho next proceeded
to sell a fine gold chain for CO cents. He
sold probably ten or fifteen dollars worth
of theso, aud showing a fine gold watch,
tying It up In tissue puper and attaching or
pretending to attach it to ono of the chains,
offered to sell the chain with "what was
on the end of it for ono dollar. He sue-
ceeded In selling a number of theso; ono
or two of the first purchasers obtained a
watch that would go, but tho remainder
received tho chain with an empty metal
case. He succeeded In currying away from
tho crowd probably about twenty.llvo dol.

of the department are a part of tho town

hastened thither, but when they arrived
there tho building was enveloped In flames.

tho citizens were removing the patterns nnd
other articles. Tho Friendship bovs climb

"Aietinj" out tho wludows, directed streams
of water both lnsldo and out of tho build
ing, nnd kept tho flames back. The
yinona kept a stream on tho blacksmith
shop and nnd there holdjtho flames In
abeyance. Tho Itescuo Company wcro on
hand with thilr hooks and ladders, and
did valuablo assistance In reaching build
Ings. They broke their hoso carrlago at
tho Desk works fire, and leaving them
without a carriage thoy dragged their hoso
to tho fire. Tho cause of tho flro Is sup
posed to havo been from a spark from
their casting in tho afternoon, nnd falling
among the timbers between tho machlno
shop and foundry, ns tho flames wero first
discovered lu that locality. Tho loss Is
estimated at $30,000 with nn lnsuranco of
9 18,000. It Is a severe loss to tho proprie
tors, who started their plant a fow years
ago under such adverse circumstances,
They havo shown their determination of
rebuilding by beginning at onco and expect
to bo able to fill orders for their numerous
patrons within sixty days. Tho town Is
fortunate in having such enterprising
men.

The Benton Agricultural Society held
their Fifth Annual Fair nt Benton Wcdnes.
day, Thursday Friday and Saturday of last
week, October 3rd, 4th, 5th and Cth, and
it was as usual a success. The B. & S.
road ran special trains and numbers attend
ed from here as well as from tho surround
ing country. Tho crowd was the largest
on Saturday,
Jerry Saltzor's mu3lc department was,
as usual, the centre of attraction. He had
on exhibition n number of his excellent
sewing machines, organs and pianos, and
the usual crowd gathered around to hear
the music rendered by Prof. Methcrcll and
Mr. Spotts.
Tho fancy work, fruit, &c, departments
were well represented and showed tho Inter
est of the ladies of that section in making
the fair a success.
There was a fine lot of live stock, cattle,
horses, &c, on exhibition.
On tho south' side of the grounds was u
flpo display of agilcultural implements,
plows, machinery, &c. While, Conner, &
Sloan had on exhibition somo of their lino
farm machinery, and tho Millvlllo Wagon
Company their celebrated wagons. Berber
& Smith, of Stillwater, showed some of
their fine carriages In the carriage depart
ment. There was tho usual display of chickens,
etc.
Tho usual number of good laces took
place.
Tho Berwick band discoursed excellent
music during three days of the fair.
Benton's first-class hotels seivcd good
meals to the numerous visitors lu tho town
durlug tho fair.

Last week Wednesday, Judgo McHcnry
raised his new barn In the placo of tho ono
recently destroyed by lightning. Though
the wlud was high and chilly, yet, other.
wise, the weather was favorablo. About
75 of tho Judge's neighbors and friends
gathered to help him in tho good work.
They commenced early In tho day and by
four p. m. the building was raised, with
ties aud plates on. Without a hitch, and
what Is more, without a single accident,
everything moved right along, until tho
job was completed.
Mr. Calvin Herring, of Orangevillc, the
contractor, deserves credit for tho workman
liko manner in which tho whole laying out
was done, every pleco of timber fitting In
tho place for which it was Intended.
The building Is 80 feet long by 45 feet
wide, all under one roof, which is to bo of
iron. In the lower story thcro will bo
ample stabling for all ordinary farm stock
and fodder rooms, a manure yard and
ample and convenient arrangements for
feeding beef cattle. Tho upper story will
havo a threshing floor tho wholo length of
the building, and sldo mows tor tho stor
ago of grain and feed. hen completed
It will bo one of tho finest buildings of tho
klud in tho vulley.

seriously hurt.
The exhibits on tho fair wcro good but
the crowds small except on Saturday.
Tho "Sunday school gimo" at tho fair
was largely patronized by thoso who love
a gamo of chance In which they pay the
wheel boy 20nts to givo them a chance
to win a dollar for 10 cents. A gamo of
chanco Is nothing but n lottery, nnd n lot
tcry Is nothing but a swindle, a swlndlo is
nothing but a fraud and whosoever Is de
ceived thereby nnd robbed, deserves no
pity.
Tho "muscle tester," by striking with a

nickel" that would send a certain weight

The operatives of such and llko games arc
simply striving to mako money without
rendering an equivalent for it. They aro
parasites to tho gambling belt and partake
of all Its principles and peculiarities. And
gambling is neither honorable nor profit
able. Tho boarders nt Jerry Hcbs' at Blooms
burg during court enjoyed themselves Im
mensely. Mrs. Hess is a good hostess and
a kind lady. Mr. Hess was engaged on
the farm tho last week of court.

E. It. Ikeler Esq. appeared nnd asked
that council take action on the petition
praying for tho extension of East 3rd street
to East street, us parties living on east
Third street had no way to get out. On
motion it wns ordered that the '.committee
on highways inquire Into the probablo cost
of extending tho street and report at next
meeting of council.
The Sanitary Committee reported that in
pursuance of complaint made to them, they
examined the premises complained of, and
found stagnant water oh south sldo of the
canal ubove Market street and advised
draining; the Commissioner of Highways
was directed to open the drains, leading
from tho end of the tcrra-cotta pipe drain
under ths bridge crobankmcnt,vto tho old
Muln ditch, ho that wuter can freely pass
away from the pipe. I
On motion it was ordered that those
lamp posts which aro so situated that the
light radiating therefrom is obstructed by
largo trees, shall bo removed to suitable
places.
A pennon was presented asking that tne
limestone spawls which had been put upon
5th street between Ccutro and Iron streets,
by citizens, should bo paid for out of the
town funds.
A communication from E. Mendcnhall to
council, asking for some repairs on upper
Malu street, was read, received and order
ed tiled, and tho Commissioner of High-
ways was directed to make the necessary
repairs if not already made.
The contract to license tho town of
Bloomsburg to lay a sewer pipe under tho
Pennsylvania canal was road and on motion
tho coutruct approved aud tho president of
council was authorized to sign tho same on
the part of the town of Bloomsburg.
Terra-cotta pipes being needed to put in
tho drain on Iron street from Sixth street
to Seventh street, it was on motion order
