From the London Times, Feb. 11.
"The Mysuries of a Hansom Cab" is
the title of a novel published in Mel
bourne wbioh is making a sensation
there similiar'to that caused by "Call
ed Back" in England a few years ago
We extract from it the following ac
count of the death of Mother Gutter
snipe, an old bag who has much to .do
with tho development of the plot :
"My good woman," said the doctor
bending over the bed, "would you not
like to eee a minister!"
She looked at him with her bright,
beady eyes, already somewhat dimmed
with the miste of death,, and said,, in a
harsh, low whisper: "Whyt"
"Because you bavo only a short time
to live," said the doctor gently. "You
aro dying."
Mother Guttersnipe sprang up and
seized his arm with a scream of terroi.
"Dyin', dyin' no 1 no 1" she wailed,
olawing bis sleeve. "I ain't fit. to, di'
cuss me ; save mo save me. I don't
know where I'd go to, s'elp me savij
me.''
The doctor tried to remove her handt
but she held on with woderful tena
olty. "It is impossible,'' he said briefly.
The hag foil back in her bed.
"I'll give yon money to save me,"
she shrieked ; "good money all rainu
all mine. See see 'ere -aurver-ains,"
and, tearing her pillow, open,
she took out a canvas bag, and from it
ponred a gleaming stream of gold
Gold gold it rolled all oyer the bed,
over the floor, away into the dark coi
ners, yet no one touched it, go en
chained were they by the horrible
speo'.acle of the dying woman clinging
to life. She clutched up some of tile
shining pieces, and held them up t
the three men as they stood silently bf
side the bed, but her hands trembled
so that sovereigns kept falling from
them on tho floor with metallio clink.
"All mino all mine," she shrieked,
loudly. "Give me my life gold
money cuss ye .1 sold ray soul for it
nave me, give mo my .lilo," and, with
trembling hands, she tried to forco the
gold on them. They did not say a
word, but Btood silently looking at
ber, while the two girls in the corner
clung together and trembled wlth fear.
"Dou't look at medon't," cried the
hag, falling down again' ariild the
Bhining gold. "Yo want mo to die,
blarst y&7-l shan't I shnn't give me
my.-gold olawing at the scattered
sovereigns. "I'll take it with mo
I shan't die Help h " whimper

she fell baok on the bed, a corpse.
, The faint light of tho candle flicker

whilo the three men, sick at heart,
turned .away in silence to seek assist

their eata-r-

When, Llontenant Melville and his

Then and there ho resolved, that) all
