TUB SALOONS NOW DOING! BUSINESS AND
TIIR APPLICATIONS FOR LICEN8KS
There is no common date fixed
throughout the Slate for tho filing of
applications for liquor licenses. The
varioas county courts set tho time to
suit their own conveniences, when
petitions must bo presented to them.
In Juoiata county applications will not
b filed until March 24, and the hearing
thereof will not tako place nntil April.
In Fayette the hearing is fixed for the
first Monday in April, and all licenses
will date from the first Monday in May.
In Snyder county liquor dealers have
until the fourth Monday in April to
present their petitions. Two applica
tions are still pending in Cameron
county.
A strong fight is being made in be
half of temperance in most of the
counties, notably Erie, Chester and
Dauphin. More applications were
made in the latter county than ever be
fore, but the ohauces are that a num
ber of petitioners will bo refused
lioenses. The Cmrt has the reputa
tion of being very rigid in its scrutiny,
and among the 171 applicants this
year are some who wore rejected in
1837. Huntingdon has hid no licenses
for a year, and up to this time no ap
plicants have presented themselves for
the current year. Indiana ia another
strictly temperance county, although
application for license has been made
by a solitary brewer. His fate will bo
deoided next month. All who applied
for licenses in Montour had their re
quests, granted. Clarion county pe
titions were heard last month and
there was no ohange in the number.
Tbe table whioh follows, although
incomplete, will give a general idea of
the number of liquor saloons and tav
erns now doing business in the counties
and the number of applications whioh
have- already been made. The list of
licences granted, however, when tb
courts have considered the petitions,
will no diubt show a marked decrease
in the number of xaloons in operation
under tltH Brooks High License law.
These figures can not be obtained un
til tbe terms have expired of all per
sons now holding lioenses under the
old regime.

Mr- Cleveland's Popularity.
There is no doubt at all of tho fact
that the peoplo of this country nre in a
serious mood and are looking forward
to the next hational conventions with
the hope that both of tho great parties
will nominate candidates for President
who" will be worthy of their support
and who will be sure to administer the
Government with wisdom, energy and
impartiality. We believe that tho
great majority of the voters of the
country desire to see Mr. Cleveland
renominated and re-elected, simply be
cause they consider him an able, honest
and eBkiunt man, and they have lull
confidence in his patriutixra and integ
rity: Tbe Wllke-barre Union-Leader
thus allud-s'to the President's undoubt
ed popularity :
Tho chances for Grover Cleveland's
renomination and re-election grow
etrongor every day. His remarkable
administrative abilities have won the
confidence and esteem of all lovers of
good Government, and his sound views
upon the great questions bearing upon
tho progress and welfare of the country
at large meet the endorsement of tho
conservative thinker everyway.
President Cleveland has proved him-
sen to ne a statesman ot uncommon
intelligence and foresight, a man of
courage a staunch advocate of equal
rights for rich and poor, a friend of
labor, an enemy of corrupt monopolies
and an uncompromising patriot. Tbeso
aro tho proved qualifications that
recommend him to the people, and
nothing but his death can Btem the
popular movement now setting in
which is destined to keep tho reins
ot government in his bands for
second term. And there's exactly
wliero they belong. Clearfield Jle-

lion. a. a. Uor, of How xork, was
asked what he know abont the alleged
strong movement in Now York in fa
vor of Gov. Hill and opposod to tho
re-nomination ot 1'resident Cleveland.
He laughed In a quiet way and said,
"Wo all think Cleveland will bo re
nominated. Tho opposition to Clove

not bo located, It is a mvslery. It is
said to bo a mystery to Gov, Hill. I
asked Mr. Clovelaod about it. Ho said
it was a mystery to himi that ho did

the KeiHibliiian nowspapors will go
right along printing full particulars of
tbe antl-uievelanu movement that does
not exist.

leavo here to-morrow on a special train
for Jacksonville, Florida, whither they
go in response to a very urgent invita
tion from the state officials. Tho party
will spend two days in Florida, and on
tho return trip will make several short
stops. The party is sure to meet with
the wildest enthusiasm in the Sou'.h,
where the President Is extremely pop
ular, on account of tho good old-fash
ioned Democratic administration which
he has given the country.

will meet in this city on the 22d inst,
for the purposo of deciding on tho
time and placo for holding the National
Nominating Convention. Delegations
trora various cities who are aosirous
of getting the Convention, are already
beginning to crowd tbe hotels, new
York will make a bard fight for it, and
San Francisco is offering all sorts of
inducements to have it held there, while
Cleveland, St. Louis, Minneapolis and
Chicago delegations' are uuntiriog in
their efforts to seoure the honor. The
general Impression is that the Commit

and an early day in July for the time.
Tho Demooratio Congressional com

The anato committee on Territor

admission of Utah to tbe Union, Sat

City, oxplained the adoption of the
constitution and its relation to tb

that Congress had no right to keep a
territory out of the Union of States
after its people had fulfilled the condi

The Fisheries Treaty has been con
eluded, but not yet made public, and
so the numerous reports in circulation
as to its provisions are mere matter
of speculation. Secretary Bayard
states that these rumors are without
foundation in fact. Before the tret
becomes effective, it mutt be appr.ivo l
by the Senate of tbe United Stales
Quxen Victoria, the Dominion of Can

certainly prove a signal and mcmorabli

The main features of the bill have
been agreed to by the Democratic
members of the Ways and Means
Committee. The details of the bill
i not known outside of the Dem

and several other gentlemen high in
the party councils, but it is safe to say
that it follows the general line of tho
Presidents message a document
likely to give its author a bigb place
in the history ot the country, as the
pos-o-sor of unlimited moral courage.
The authors ot this tanlt bill have
aimed to reduce tbe revenues of the
Government from $80,000,000 to 870,

A Sioux baby waa born tho other

the first Indian baby ever born in Brit

and she has been named Frances Vic

of Wales. The Indians carried on so
over tbe birth of tho baby that the
country people living in tbe vicinity
of the encampment, which is near
Manchester, were frightened half out
of their witB. They didn't seem to
understand the customs of the original
Americans.
Starvation, Death and Oonnibtlism
St. Faci, February 20. Rev. W.
Spendlove, a missionary, has reached
Winnipeg from north of McKeuzie
river, where he has been for nine years.
tlis journey down took nearly three
montbs. From Peace river he heard
of cases where Indians had died of
starvation and had then been eaten by
their comrades. Deer have been very
scarce for the past two years. There
is much feeling because the govern
ment of Ottawa has taken no notice of
the destitution of these Indians re
peatedly brought to its attention.
Salt Rheum
The agonies ot those who sutler from severe
salt rheum are Indescribable. The cleanalng,
healing, purifying Influences ot Hood's Barn

" I take pleasure In recommending Hood's
Barsaparllla, for It has dono wonders for me.
I had salt rheum very severely, affecting me

have suffered from this disease In Its worst
form can Imagine the extent of my affliction.
I tried many medicines, but failed to receive
benefit until I took Hood's Barsaparllla.
Then the disease began to subside, the
Agonizing Itch and Pain
disappeared, and now I am entirely free from
the disease. My blood seems to be thor

greatly benefited." Lyman Aixsn, Sexton
N. E. Church, North Chicago, I1L
"My son bad salt rheum on his hands and
the calves of his legs, so bad that they would
crack open and bleed. He took Hood's Bar

From 108 to 135
"I was seriously troubled with silt rheum
