Interstate Aerioultnral Convention, at
Lake Charles-
Governor MoEnery, of Louisiana, has
issued a call for an Interstate Conven
tion in tho interest of stock-raising,
dairying, fruit-growing, and general
agriculture, to bo held at Lake Charles
La., on tho 22d, 23rd and 21th of Feb-!
ruary, 1887.
Tho convention will bo formally
opened on Wednesday morning, after
tho close of Mardi Gras.
Ono of tho most noteworthy indica
tions of tho great industrial progiess of
the Gulf States is tho marked attention
of their publio men to agriculture and
tho efforts thoy aro making to bring
the theory and tho tntthoda of agricul
ture in those Stales into hartnoiiy with
the teachings of science and tho high
est demands of a progressive civiliza
tion. Nature has been prodigal of her
gifts to tho Statu of Louisiana. For
fertility of soil, salubrious climate, and
for great variety of products, Louisiana
ranks among tho most favored coun
tries of tho globe.
Governor McEnery has shown com
mendablo wisdom iu thus giving tho
weight of his oflioial inlluenco to call
a convention which cannot fail to bo
of ineslimablo value to the farm inter
est of that Stato and tho country gen
erally. Wo trust it may bo widely
noticed by tho press, and that the re
sults may bo all tho people anticipate.
This convention is so called that ex
cursionists can remain in New Orleans
till the close of Mards Gras and take
tho train for Lake Charles on Tuesday
ovenincr.
Full information in regard to tho
convention and tho low rato of trans-
jtortation, can bo obtained by address
ing the Secretary,
S. A. Knait,
Lake Ciarlcs, La.
Sub-Treasurer Oiuda Explains.

telegram states that tho counterfeits
were numbered H 18,031,301, and aro
an oxcellent imitation of the genuine
notes. Mr. Canda, said lie had hoard
of no such counterfeits, and none of
them had been presented at the treas
ury for redemption. He claimed that
genuine 1 ills aro often mistaken for
bogus bills by pcoplo who aro not ex
perts, if they differ at all from tho
notes thoy are accustomed to handle.
Mr. Canada said that theso mistakes
aro particularly liable to happen now,
becauso two years ago wheu the gov
