COLUMBIAN SUPPLEMENT. Bloomsburg, Pa.. Friday, February 4, 1 S87. Riudleberger oa Aristocrats. .Senator Uiddlobcrgcr ot Virginia recently said to a friend in Washing ton : "I proposo showing tho Senate that I have somo rights in that body and do tfot intend that I shall always 10 looked upon as one, like many of tho others, simply occupying a seat in tho chamber. I liavo my opinion ui) on subjects, and havo tho eatno right to express myself as those who havo been elected to tho Senato bcomiao of their vast wealth. I havo nova- op posed anything that I thought waa proper. Thoro is too much aristocracy in tho Senate, and a growing tendency upon a majority of Senators to do everything except what is American. It is not a body representing tho peo plo of tho country, but upon tho con trary, a kind of a club whero nono but tho rioh and arbitrary are wanted. A poor man in tho Senate is Heated by many of his biother Senators as an outlaw and looked upon with ecorn aud derision. I am poor and am proud of it, and all tho timo I h.ivo been hero thoro has been only ono Senator who has shown mo tho courtesy of inviting rao to his house. This was Senator Palmer, of Michigan. I asked him if it was necessary to como in evening dress and ho Baid it was. J could not go becauso I did not have tho money to spare with which to purchase' the conventional evening dress suit. It may be," continued tho Senator, "that becauso I do not wear a dress suit I am not appreciated by my colleagues.'' Tho Senator for the last fow days has been considering tho question of resigning aud will probably resign at the assembling of tho Fiftieth Con gress. "I think," ho said, "that in tho event of my resignation I will enter the State Senate of my State and do what I can to repeal some of the odious laws that are now upon tho statute books, which havo boon enacted under tho Mabone rule. I know that Ms hone despises me, but I do not care for that. If I could control every voto in tho State, Mahono could buy them way from me in fifteen minutes. Ma hono has a standing in tho Senate, be oauso ho has money. I havo douu. as much for the people of Virginia 89 he. The other Senators can speak of mo as tnoy HKe, but they cannot buy me, neither can they force me to voto at all times in tho interest of corporations and array myself on tho side of the woum-be aristocracy. The Lojalty of Old Blaves, A rare instance of tho fidelity of two oolorcd men to their former master has 1'ust corao to publio attention in Jcforo tho war one of tho proudest slave owners in that section was Col. Downinc. He was the owner of largo tracts of land, as well as of a number of slaves. When tho troubles of 18G0 came on he was tho rankest secessionist in the country, Tho strntrglo lett him land poor ; acre by aero lie sold it off, beint; unable to square himself with the now order of things. At last when all his land was gone and his family dead, ho was afllicted with blindness and was in danger of being put in tho county poor house. "They must not do that with old master, said Joo Downing. Joe and his brother Peter were tho slaves of Col. Downing boforo tho war and al irays went under his name. While tneir old master was going down in the world, theso two colored men wero hard at work and saving money. They purchased lot) acres ol rich laud, built thereon a comfortablo house, accumu lated livo stock aud farming implo meets and had good credit at the bank here. To this homo they took their old master, installed him in tho best rooms and compelled all tho peoplo around to treat him with tho utmost respect. Lately Col. Downing has seen leaving that his death was ap proaching and Beemed to be fearful that Im might bo buried as a pauper. To ease his mind on this matter, tho brothers have just deposited in bank hero $100, to bo held until the old man's death, with which to pay all funeral expenses. Milledgeville (?,) Chronicle.
