COLUMBIAN SUPPLEMENT. Bloomsburg, Pa.. Friday, January 28, 1887. CHURCH NOTES. Germany bus 109 Baptist congregation In eighteen months 1,500 converts liav been added to the Salvation Army in Chi. (ago. Th Presbyterian Board of Foreign Mis siotis asks for money. It is about 1 150,000 In debt. At tho Methodist Missionary conference receipts of t'J92,000 for last year wero re ported. The mission board of the Mothodlst clmrch appropriated $13,000 for BpanUi New Mexico. There are 1,071 Young Men's Christian associations In the United States, with 140,000 members. There are 183 colored Presby terlan churches in the south, with 13,033 members. Of this number eighty-five churches are In North Carolina and fifty-nine In South Carolina. In New York city a new clmrch is to be established. It is for ministers and baptized peoplo acknowledging the ecclesiastical au thority of tho College of Apostles, which is a place of worship according to the doctrine of tho Cathollo Apostolic church, and has here tofore had its headquarters at Albury, Eng land. The amount appropriated by the general missionary committee of the Methodist Epls copal church for carrying on mission work for the ensuing year is $571,437 for foreign missions and $317,750 for homo missions, making a total of $1,080,187, an increase of $89,187 over the amount appropriated last year. There are no less than thirty-six different missionary societies represented In India, , besides ten or more private missions. All branches of tho church are reDrcsented and all are laboring hand hi hand for the uplift ing of India. According to the statistical summary for 1885 there Tero 137,504 com municants representing the fruits of these missions. Tho Baptist church has three great organi zations, tho Foreign Missionary society, the Publication society, and the Home Mission so ciety, which latter has for its motto, "Korth America for Christ" It was organized in New York state in 1833. Since its organiza tion it has expended $5,131,314, established $,416 churches, baptized 09,914 members, organized 700 Nunday schools and now has 700 laborers ongnged in carrying on its work What Ouo Vote Accomplished. The fact that in Indiana tho official count shows that a candidato lias been re-elected by Just one vote leads The South Bend Tribune to remember that In 1842 Lot Day, Sr., was tho Democratic candi date for sheriff and William Cosgrovo was the Whig candidate. When the official canvass of tho vote was made Lot Day was elected by one majority. In 1844 Hugh C. Flannegan was elected represen tative by ouo majority. He went to the legislature and his vote elected a United States senator by one majority. The United States senator's one vote brought on the Mexican war. So St. Joseph county has had an experience that no other county perhaps in the United States has had with a single vote. Four men elected to important offices by single votes and tho Mexican war brought on by a single vote. Now York Sun. As a Great Truth. The following from Mr. Lowell's Har vard address is going the rounds as "a Krcnt truth," as If It were a matter of familiar experience: "A man rich only for himself has a life as barren and cheer less ns the" serpent set to guard a burled treasure."
