Diamond Gutting
Tho form into which a diamond is
cut has great influence on its beauty
and fire. Tho most common aro what
are allied tho "btilliaut" and the
"rose," or rosette.'" Tho latter, so
named from its similarity to an unopen
ed rosebud, was one of the earliest
forms in use. and is applied generally
to the cheaper kinds of stones.
It is a sort of pyramid, with a tlat
base, and inclined facets, terminating
upward in a pointed apex. The tlat
base is imbedded in tho setting; and
thereforo in tho ro?e diamond tho whole
of tho stone appears projecting above.
The brilliant is the most valuable
form. It may bo considered as form
ed of two pyramids, connected togeth
er at their 1 ases, with the npex of
each truncated or cut off, and tho sides
worked into facets, as in the case of
the rose. Tho stone is held in seitiug
at tho broadest part, or junction of tho
pyramid; one pyramid projects upward
in sight, tho other is hidden below, to
that only half tho stone, or somewhat
lest, appears; but tho hidden part w
more powerfully effective in adding to
tho brilliancy.
Tho diamond cutter has to perform
a most difficult undertaking, namely :
to givo about sixty symmetrical and
regular faces to stones sometimes only
an eighth of an inch in diameter, with
out any mechanical aids whatever to
his judgment ; and yet producing,
without a particle of unnecessary
waste, tho very largest stone geomet
rically poessiblo out of the rough body.
This, of course, can only be tho result
of great skill and long experience.

his eye tho exact anglo at which tho
stone must be placed to cut tho new
one, ond tho oxaot depth to which the
grinding for tho latter must bo carried;
and so accurately is this dono that it is

longer. Tho main loss of moisturo is

tho soil, and tho greater tho quantity
tho bettor, as it is a measure" of tho
growth of tho crop. This measure op
plies to tho roots of tho plant as well,
which penetrate deeply if favored by
culture, and this culture, deep and mel
low, Is necessary, when it is considered
what an amount of water grass tnkes
from the soil, the process goinjjon dur
ing tho entire season, from early spring
till latu fall, the grains occupying but
half that time. Deep cnlturo is there
fore of more importance in growing a
grass crop than out- of grain. As in
our droughty cliniato wo do not obtain
the requisite amount of moisture from
tho air, wn must seek for it in tho
ground, and only in its depth can it bo
obtained. In this way heavy crops
and a good sod aro secured, tho sod
when turned down, still fuither bene
fiting the laud by introducing vegeta
ble matter, when distributed through it
is ono of tho licit means of favoring
moisture. Th'n prepares the ground
not only for further growing gias or
clover, of any other forago crop, but in
a superior manner grain, including
wheat, if the soil is composed largely
ot clay.
"The growing of sod, a-i is well
known to good fanners, is one of the
principal means of improving land, ns
the dairy regions hive long since
shown in this country and grazing iij
England. ISadly l educed land has
been renovated and made profitably
productive in tho clay loams of Central
New York by a single two years' course
of clover aided or.iy by plater, good
yield of hay being realized at the same.
So, with a fair set of grass which can'
ba obtained on worn-out land only by
early sowing on winter grain in the
spring or, better, on land" prepared in
autumn without the grain a good sod
has been secured in a few years by tho
uao of mineral manures adapted to tho
land. Tho value of the fertilizers was
realized in the crop grown, while tho
main benefit vegetable matter in tho
soil was secured in the sod, where
farm manure was wanting. But all
this must bo preceded by a good prep
aration of the soil, comminuting nnd
deeply working it. which "wjjl tell in
future years in its favor; 'just as bad
treatment will still further rcducc.it."

According to tho Germantown "lele-
graph nothing seems more surprising
than tho rapid movement which seems
to have been made tho last fifteen to
twenty years in lavor of growing pear
trees in grass. Wo well tcmember,
when tho subject was first mooted,
what a storm the suggestion made. It
was looked on ns the height of absurd
ity, and those who recommended it
wero thought to bo lunatics of tho
most confirmed description. We no'v
ever took any sides in this question un
til our own experience proved its val
ue, aud when we have successful in
stances of pear culture in gr.t3s, as we
often have. Wc do not' deny that
then! aro many good cultivators who
havo excellent success in what h called
clean culture of pear orchards. Their
error has been in regarding it as the
only successful plan. As wo have said,
it is rather remarkable how great is
tho change tho other way; nnd we
should not be surprised ono of these
days to find tho publio running to tho
opposite extremo and insisting that'in
grass only can pears be grown. Wo
aro confident that tho crops aro more
regular, the fruit more perfect, and tho
trees aro better protected against
blight. Wo do not, jn fact, ever re
member having a pear tree to die of
blight not that we believo crass is a
perfect protection, only that such is the

in grass than in cultivated land, and
generally is more moist, and then, too,
tho roots aro never disturbed. Wo
hivo lost several standard and a num
ber of dwarf trees by blight ; in, fact,
latterly not a year passes that thero is
not a diminution of our trees in this
way ; while in grass nothing but old
ago seems to cause them to succumb.
hen wo say that wo have three trees
on our premises said to bo full 160
years old, in good bearing condition,
one of them apparently as good as ever
it was, we think there is good ground
for our opinion.
